I've always liked Sinclair Lewis' work from the 1920s. I doubt his
reputation will rise very much in the future, but when it came to
epater les bourgeois americains, Lewis was superb.
MAIN STREET was one book that I was not able to finish.
Maybe I was too young to appreciate it when I tried to read it (16).
Maybe I'll try it again.

I saw Patti LuPone in the original production of Sunset at the Adelphi Theatre in London. She was brilliant. It's so sad that she fell out with ALW. Funny, I actually saw Elaine Paige as Evita (she was the original Evita, apart from Julie Covington on the pre-show recording).
I love Julie Covington's renditions on the EVITA concept recording. I also love Elaine Paige's versions from the original cast recording I wish there was an unabridged recording as with the original Broadway recording with Patti LuPone.
Is it true that Julie Covington turned down the offer to appear in the original stage production of EVITA?

Beats me. A lot of unconvincing crying and whining..........
I'm pretty sure Melanie's son's voice and crying were dubbed in that scene.
It struck me as such when I first heard/saw it, the same with Bonnie Butler's voice.
-
Poor Joan. Not a great send off (moviewise)..........
Well, she really needed the money so she took the job.
I give her credit for not just phoning in the performance and actually making lines like following work:
Conceivably, Trog was frozen solid during the long, long glacial age. A state similar to cryogenic suspension. Then as the underground streams and currents brought more and more warmth to the frozen atmosphere, his body thawed out. We now know that human s-p-e-r-m, red blood cells, bone marrow cells, even skin can be brought back to life after freezing.
-
Most actors of her rank wouldnt have accepted the part in the first place. I guess vodka helped. Sorry, but for me Trog makes Berserk! look like Citizen Kane....
Awwww, don't be mean to Trog.

-
UGH. That obnoxious kid.............
Was he really obnoxious?
Isn't he only in that scene outside Melanie's room when she's dying?
Was his voice dubbed in GONE WITHE WIND just as the one who played Bonnie Butler's was?

Even Patty Duke thought it, and so did Desi. He and Sean Astin have a very close relationship. It was years later that a paternity test disclosed the father to be Michael Tell, who was married to Patty for 13 days, during one of her manic episodes. Sean Astin enjoys a relationship with John Astin, Michael Tell, Desi Arnaz, Jr. and Michael Pearce, Patty's current husband.
I read online that Patty Duke brought the baby (Sean) to see Lucille Ball at one point for the two to bond, but Lucy would have none of it.
Lucy supposedly detested Patty Duke but she liked Liza Minnelli.
-
June Foray also did the voice of Natasha Fatale (of "Boris and Natasha"). Now, had she dubbed Mary Badham in THAT character's voice, the episode would be an all-time classic. (Kind of a LYLAH CLARE prequel.)
A LYLAH CLARE prequel, that is a idea!

What's to commit to in TROG????
She commits to the truth of the story. Most actors would not have played that role as a real person.

And here's our Patti as the best Norma Desmond (not great video quality, though). There are better quality videos online, of Patti singing "With One Look," but this gives context:
Swithin, I am in total agreement with you on this and I do mean total!
The World Premiere Recording of SUNSET BOULEVARD with Patti LuPone as Norma Desmond is the best (although I miss "Every Movie's A Circus" which was added later).
In terms of both acting and singing Patti is indeed the best Norma Desmond EVER in Andrew Lloyd Webber's SUNSET BOULEVARD.
While I enjoy Elaine Paige's recordings of the songs, Patti LuPone brings Norma to life as a real person, not the caricature played by Glenn Close, who is nowhere near the singer that Patti Lupone is.
I can understand how Joe Gillis could be drawn in on an emotional level by Patti's Norma.
Here's a clip from a showcase production of SUNSET BOULEVARD from the 1992 Sydmonton Festival at Andrew Lloyd Webber's Hampshire estate.
Even with minimal costumes and settings, Patti is electrifying as Norma.
Those familiar with the show will notice some differences in the lyrics compared to the final version of "With One Look."

That and (supposedly) beating the [...] out of Danny Bonaduce.
Apparently I had the story confused.
It was Donny Osmond who challenged Danny Bonaduce on a radio show, and Danny whooped Donny.
Danny Bonaduce answering a question from The Seatlle Times about how he got interested in boxing:
Donny Osmond. I was in my car and I heard him on a radio show. He was talking about kicking my tail, and I knew he was getting into something he didn't want to be getting into. It turned into a giant publicity thing. Pretty soon there was ring arranged and sponsors and everything, I couldn't believe he took the fight. The fight was set, I went into the ring with total disrespect, I had a couple drinks in me and after the fist couple rounds I thought I was going to lose. In the third round I gave him a bloody nose. He freaked out and ran away and I pretended to chase him and won the fight. So after that I had nothing but respect for boxing and even started training.
The match occurred when Osmond and Bonaduce both were working in Chicago in the 1990s.

His dancing in the "White and Nerdy" video is the greatest thing Donny Osmond has ever done.
That and (supposedly) beating the [...] out of Danny Bonaduce.

I liked Barbarella's spaceship, Alpha 7.
I liked her ship, it was pretty sweet. The shag carpet walls were an especially nice touch.
Yes indeed.

So you call one of the great ladies of the American theater "The old lady in the gold lame dress?" I haven't changed my mind about what I said -- but... You can't call Patti LuPone "The old lady in the gold lame dress!" That's in the Code. Read it very carefully, and you'll see it there.
If there's isn't a clause against Patti-bashing in the Code, there certainly should be.
In this instance the potential offender did not recognize that it was Ms. Lupone who was being bashed so perhaps no infraction occurred.
But all should be warned: Don't let LUPONE catch you texting in a theater during a performance.

How about a lemon?
Do you mean a real lemon or is Real Lemon okay?

Marie Osmond’s Easy Lemon Cheesecake w/Blueberry Topping Ingredients
- 8oz Cream Cheese – Soften by bringing to room temperature
- 14oz can Sweetened Condensed Milk
- ½ cup “Real Lemon” brand Lemon Juice
- 1 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract
- Ready made Graham Cracker Crust
- Using a mixer, whip softened cream cheese until fluffy.
- Add Sweetened condensed milk and continue to whip.
- Add lemon juice and vanilla.
- When all ingredients are mixed well, pour into a ready-made graham cracker crust (or you can make your own).
- Place in refrigerator for a few hours to chill.
- After chilled, serve with your favorite fruit topping (Fresh, frozen or canned), or enjoy plain.
I do question her choice of using bottled lemon juice instead of juice from a real lemon. If lemon is such an integral ingredient, hence "Marie Osmond's Easy Lemon Cheesecake..." I don't know why you wouldn't use something fresh.
I'm still waiting for reviews of Marie Osmond’s Easy Lemon Cheesecake w/Blueberry Topping.
Has anyone made this dessert and can provide genuine feedback?
I really want to serve this at my upcoming gala, but I can't risk presenting an untested dish to the uber-critical (to put it mildly) glitterati who will be in attendance.
If they "no like" I risk being banised to the ranks of hoi polloi!
Maybe I'll end up having the entire affair catered, but I so wanted to make a dessert item myself . . .

HoldenIsHere--TSAR isn't remotely funny--it's theme is about the emptiness of its' character's lives--Hemingway's prose is best described in the 1st two posts of this thread.
Not remotely funny?
It does sound like SEINFELD.
I couldn't resist . . .
-
Not bad. Just saw her in Shows for Days. Way over the top and tons of fun!

Awesome!
-
And here's to the ladies who lunch . . .
. . . and one for Mahler.
-
TSAR is the SEINFELD of its time.
they're both about nothing.
I've never read THE SUN ALSO RISES but if it's anything like SEINFELD, no thanks.

Well, the kids were Southern. To make things more odd, the parents had (West Coast?) accents. The whole ep was as much of a butcher job as Mary's voice.
I can tell the actors playing the parents in that TWILIGHT ZONE are making an attempt at Southern accents.
The writer also has them calling each other "sugar."

That's correct, Holden. If you watch the ep, you can definitely tell it's June Foray.
That could have been such a great episode of The Twilight Zone ("The Bewitchin' Pool"), but there were problems, including Mary's voice.
Oh wow! I just watched some of the "The Bewitchin' Pool" on YouTube.
It appears the characters are actually supposed to be Southern, but they replaced Mary Badham's real Southern accent with June Foray (Rocky the Squirrel) doing a fake Southern accent. Very strange.

Regarding the National Theatre: I love the Stage On Screen presentations that are being made.
They show them regularly at Northwestern University.
