I have to also say that- while I have not seen the entire movie because I thought it was really, really boring- I'm 50/50 on DiCaprio's performance (see also DJANGO UNCHAINED) and thought Cate Blanchet- while a good actress in numerous other films- was dreadful as Hepburn.
I liked Leonardo DiCaprio a lot in THE AVIATOR but (while I like Cate Blanchett as an actor very much ---- I wish a recording of her stage performance as Blanche DuBois in A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE would be released or broadcast) I did not care much for her as Katharine Hepburn. The Academy obviously thought otherwise since she was given an Oscar for it.
I think she did a good job with Hepburn's speech pattern and I liked the scene with her outside the door when Hughes was having his meltdown, but for the most part I did not care for her in that movie.
Then again I'm not much of a fan of Katherine Hepburn either.

She such a favorite of mine. Up until the early 70s, I saw every film she made, in a movie theater. I have excellent Blu-rays of THE MOON-SPINNERS, IN SEARCH OF THE CASTAWAYS, SUMMER MAGIC and my favorite THE TROUBLE WITH ANGELS. I have DVDs of WHISTLE DOWN THE WIND and many of her other films. She and her sister Juliet are appearing in Australia in the play, LEGENDS. I'd love for them to bring that to the States.
johnm001, do you a Region 1 (North America) DVD of WHISTLE DOWN THE WIND?
I haven't been able to find one.

I, personally, don't think that had anything to do with the WSS Oscars. Rita, is dubbed in all but, "America".
Yes and Jamie Foxx was dubbed when he played Ray Charles and he won an Oscar.

Is The Ghost and Mr. Chicken a sequel to The Ghost and Mrs Muir ?
Perhaps it is a prequel.

Personally, I don't buy into the theory that today's mainstream media is controlled by liberals. Politically controversial films that America was once so good at seem to have disappeared.
It's a myth that for some reason seems to be continually touted as truth by some people.
The only thing controlling today's mainstream media is the bottom line.

Well, those little faux fedoras are really popular, among all ages too.
. . . which leads us back to Degrassi

Gotta love it! Complete with red Technicolor lips even. Totally impressed by what good sports the band were. Btw, Rufus joins Renee Fleming on her Christmas album to sing "In the Bleak Midwinter" as a tribute to his mother and they chat briefly before they do it live on her PBS special. Anyway, just watched "Summer Stock" when it was shown again. Have you seen the "Mr. Monotony" outtake from "Easter Parade" (It's in "That's Entertainment III".) in which she wears the same fedora and jacket a number of years previously?
I have not seen the "Mr. Monotony" outtake. I will look for it.
Rufus Wainwight and his father Loudon appear as Cocoanut Grove vocalists in the movie THE AVIATOR.

63. It's much easier to elude all of the military police at Walter Reed than it is to keep a young boy from following you.

Animal crackers in my soup
monkies and rabbits loop the loop,
Gosh, oh gee, but I have fun,
swallowin' animals one by one.
In every bowl of soup I see,
lions and tigers watching me,
I make 'em jump right thru a hoop,
those animal crackers in my soup
When I get hold
of the 'Big bad wolf'
I just push him under to drown.
Then I bite him
in a million bits
and I gobble him right down.
When they're inside me
where its dark,
I walk around like Noah's ark
I stuff my tummy like a goop
with animal crackers in my soup
As I mentioned in another thread, Shirley Temple's rendition of "Animal Crackers In My Soup" is almost as good as mine.

I quoted myself to add that they also dubbed Russ Tamblyn in "The Jet Song", after the fact. Tamblyn recorded it and sang to his own track when they filmed the number, but Tucker Smith who is also is in the film and sings, "Cool", dubbed him. Saul Chaplin (associate producer and in charge of all the music choices), was funny that way. He had an expectation of how something should sound, and would choose to dub to get it. Although, accordingly to Tamblyn, he never heard that anyone was unhappy with his take on the song, and would have, gladly redone it, to give them what they wanted. Chaplin did the same thing to Rita Moreno, who is only singing in "America".
Here's a clip with Russ Tamblyn's own vocals for "The Jet Song" as well as a bit of Tucker Smith's vocal which was used in the actual film.
The clip also includes Natalie Wood's vocals for "I Feel Pretty" (which were replaced by Marni Nixon's in the released movie).

In anticipation of the release of STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS (Episode VII) in December 2015 my sweetie and I have been re-watching the previous STAR WARS movies in episodic order as opposed to release date order --- meaning that we began with the prequels that were originally released from 1999 to 2005.
At the risk of being vilified, I find that I actually enjoy these movies.
I must have been influenced by the overwhelming negative reaction to ATTACK OF THE CLONES (Episode II) during its initial release because I seem to remember being vauely disappointed when I first saw it. However, upon recently seeing this movie again, I must confess that I found it to be very entertaining.

The Ghost and Mr. Chicken. This movie was silly and full of actors from many of my favorite Nick-at-Nite shows: Don Knotts and Hal Smith (Barney Fife and Otis Campbell from "The Andy Griffith Show"); Dick Sergeant (Darrin #2 from "Bewitched"); Sandra Gould (Gladys Kravitz #2 from "Bewitched"); Burt Mustin (Gus the Fireman from "Leave it to Beaver"); Ellen Corby (Grandma Walton from "The Waltons" which is actually NOT a favorite show of mine); Charles Lane (This man is in everything, but I remember him in separate appearances on "I Love Lucy" playing different characters); Phillip Ober (General Stone from "I Dream of Jeannie"). Not to mention that the house Knotts' character spent the night in was next door to the Munsters' house! This movie was ridiculous and I liked the guy that kept saying "Attaboy [insert name here]!"
I've never seen THE GHOST AND MR. CHICKEN but it sounds like a lot of fun for a former diehard Nick At Nite viewer like me.
Here's a bit of trivia: Both of the actors who played Gladys Kravitz in BEWITCHED (Alice Pearce and Sandra Gould) appear in the movie DEAR HEART, which features a great performance by the wonderful Geraldine Page.

I guess, but come on: some of you guys have to be as curious as I am

Yes, LHF, you can count me among the curious.

I think it's a great film with fine performances, but DiCaprio didn't quite have the gravitas then. Seemed too young, unlike a few years later, when he came off so much better as J. Edgar.
I agree that Leonardo DiCaprio looks young in THE AVIATOR, but I think his performance as Howard Hughes is amazing.
I can't think of another movie actor of his generation who has as much range.
And he takes such chances in his performances, never turning in a "personality" performance as most American movie actors do.
PS. I can totally relate to the scene in THE AVIATOR where DiCaprio as Hughes doesn't want to touch the washroom door.

I had never realized that that is the same actress. She is FANTASTIC in STRANGERS ON A TRAIN: not just for her wonderfully eccentric line readings but for all she says with just her eyes and facial expressions (there's a scene where Ruth Roman confronts her about what kind of man her son really is and she denies it, but we can see in her face and body language that she totally already knows.)
I would definitely rate her work in that movie as one of the absolute best examples of someone milking the hell out of a small role and coming up aces.
I think she & the original Gladys Kravitz were the only two cast members of. BEWITCHED who won Emmys.
Both Marion Lorne (Aunt Clara) and Alice Pearce (the original Gladys Kravitz) were awarded their Emmys posthumously.
Both of them competed against Agnes Moorehead (as Endora) the year that they won in the Supporting Actress in a Comedy category.
One year Elizabeth Montgomery and Agnes Moorehead competed against each other in the Lead Actress in a Comedy Emmy category. Lucille Ball won that year for her role on THE LUCY SHOW. The other nominee in the category was Marlo Thomas for her role in THAT GIRL.

As speedracer and others on this board know, Hayley Mills played the title role in the Disney Channel series GOOD MORNING MISS BLISS, which was later re-packaged in syndication (and on Netflix) as the "first season" (the junior high days) of SAVED BY THE BELL.

Although Hayley Mills was the star of GOOD MORNING MISS BLISS, Mark-Paul Gosselaar (as eighth-grader Zack Morris) had as much or more screen time in most episodes.

Tonight (July 9, 2015) TCM is airing THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, which features a great performance by Billy Gray.

I've seen Martin Scorsese's THE AVIATOR before but I'm looking forward its airing on TCM tonight.
The movie stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Howard Hughes and features Cate Blanchett as Katharine Hepburn, Jude Law as Errol Flynn and Kate Beckinsale as Ava Gardner.

She did her own signing for WEST SIDE STORY, then was dubbed by Marni Nixon. I'm talking about her voice on the songs in WSS. Nixon's voice is better, with better intonation, but, I actually believe that all they needed to do was "sweeten" her voice, not completely replace it.
Yes, and if they had genuinely worked with Natalie Wood on her singing rather than just patronizing her with no intention of using her vocals I think she would have amazed even her critics.
In the clip below, I actually prefer Natalie's vocals to the more polished ones of Marni Nixon.
(Richard Beymer is dubbed in this clip as he was in the movie.)

If a joke has to be explained, it's no longer funny......Jay Leno
Hehe.
Well Ruth Gordon was actually fully visible as "Carlton's Mother" on that episode of RHODA . . . unlike Carlton himself.

My favorite line from that episode:
Carlton's Mother (to Rhoda): "You got any spare meat?"

Is this her?

What is that photo from?

I think she did some singing in Inside Daisy Clover, but I dont recall her sounding like Marni Nixon.......
Natalie Wood was dubbed by Jackie Ward in INSIDE DAISY CLOVER . . . although as with WEST SIDE STORY she thought that her own vocals would be used.
Natalie Wood did her own singing in GYPSY.
The video below also includes clips from a TV movie about the life of Natalie Wood.

Is this her?

As I mentioned in another post. I could totally relate to DiCaprio as Hughes not wanting to touch the washroom door in that scene from THE AVIATOR.
It is frustratingg to wash one's hands in a public washroom and then have to touch the door handle!
Paper towels and hand sanitizer have come to my rescue on many occasions so luckily I've never been trapped in the washroom like in the movie.
