  1. Y'know, I did attempt to look up the definition for clarification, and got more confused.  There are MANY definitions to the word, and in one way, the situation I brought up COULD be considered some form of irony.  But, to whit:

There's a TV commercial for 7-up "10" in which there's a scene shown where a truckload of old tires is sidelined with a flat tire, and the voice-over claims, "If you can squeeze THIS much irony in a situation,...." the implication is that then you can get full 7-up flavor in a ten calorie beverage( or some such crap).

Some definitions of irony I've found claim it's synonymous with sarcasm.  I've never considered it thus.

Sacracastic remarks are probably the most commonly heard examples of ironic speech (where the intended meaning is different---usually the opposite---of the literal meaning).

For irony to exist in created texts (whether literary or media texts) there must be intent on the part of the creators.. Since there is no intent in the 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY example there can be no irony.

  2. Oh man. Hope they had some EMTS standing by for that one.

I take your word for it- never having seen a substantial amount of THREE... or FOUR...

The only two films I can ever recall seeing Raquel in were THE LAST OF SHEILAH, and she is lovely to look at and embarassing to watch, and her "special guest appearance" in LEGALLY BLONDE and her craft has not improved with time.

ps- who'd you put odds on, Raquel or Faye?

In "real life" I would say Faye.

  3. Ann Wedgeworth played Jessica Lange`s mother in the Patsy Cline biopic SWEET DREAMS. I thought that she was young for the role.

Ann Wedgeworth was also funny as Lana on THREE'S COMPANY.

She was hot for John Ritter and Don Knotts was hot for her.

Ah, the good old days of Nick At Nite.

  4. yeah that is pretty bizarre. may be the most bizarre thing I've heard all day....(Raquel must have worked overtime with the Hollywood Foreign Press to bring home that one.)

Raquel Welch was good in THE THREE MUSKETEERS though.

I like the humor she brought to the role of Constance and of course her fight scene with Faye Dunaway.

    Curly Top (1935)

A wealthy man adopts two orphaned sisters.

DirIrving Cummings CastShirley Temple , John Boles , Rochelle Hudson .

    LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW:

D: Irving Cummings. Shirley Temple, John Boles, Rochelle Hudson, Jane Darwell, Rafaela Ottiano, Arthur Treacher.

"Shirley sings ''Animal Crackers In My Soup'' as she plays Cupid again, this time for sister Hudson and handsome Boles. Based on Jean Webster's Daddy Long Legs. Also shown in computer-colored version."

I surprised to learn that CURLY TOP is a premiere.

The highlight for me is "Animal Crackers In My Soup."

Shirley Temple sings that song almost as well as I do.

  6. I just saw a DVD of THE NOTEBOOK for the first time.

It's a love story starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, which was a hit at the time of its 2004 release. James Garner is prominently featured in a supporting role, along with Gena Rowlands.

Normally a tear jerker of this sort is not my cup of tea but I decided to watch it because of Garner's participation.

There are no great surprises in the overall story but it is certainly well written, directed and acted. Most of the tale, involving the film's two young stars, is told in flashback by Garner to Gena Rowlands, as they play a pair of seniors residing in a nursing home.

While I generally appreciated the love story of the two young people, what took me by surprise was the power of the film's final scenes involving Garner and Rowlands. I will not, of course, divulge their contents for those reading this who have yet to see the film.

I was unsure until near the end whether James Garner was the older Ryan Gosling or the older James Marsden.

I wasn't sure if it was going to go the expected Hollywood way.

    I didn't read the book.

  7. I love Mary Steenburgen's "My Life As A Beauty" speech is MISS FIRECRACKER:

A thang of beauty is joy forever.

It will never, never pass into nothingness.

Ah, so aptly put by Mr. John Keats in 1818.

  8. That's exactly the reason we continued watching. It started weird and got more and more bizarre...sledding on "ice manta rays"... the killer dolls...the killer parakeets...the angel's nest...smoking "essence of man...it's chockfull of 1960's freakiness, with the added bonus of a plot (of sorts) unlike the Monkees' Head (now there's a movie that would probably benefit from application of a certain weed!).

Yes, I loved the freaky weirdness of this movie.
