  1. OMG!! i didnt know Liz had a statue in Salem. How long has that been there???

At the end of the Essex Street Pedestrian Mall in Salem, MA, is six-foot-tall bronze statue of Elizabeth Montgomery. The statue was sponsored by cable channel TV Land and commemorates the 60s-era sit-com Bewitched, in which Montgomery played a witch named Samantha who tries to live a normal married life with her non-warlock husband.

Unveiled in 2005, the six-foot-tall statue depicts Montgomery astride a broom and flying in front of a crescent moon.

The statue is more relevant than just the fact that it matches the theme of the town. In 1970, Bewitched filmed a series of episodes on location there after a fire shut down its Hollywood set. The episodes have come to be known as the Salem Saga and featured many of the landmarks of the city. The arrangement ended up being a great tourist boon for the city, helping to elevate awareness of the historical location.

I love the Salem Saga episodes of BEWITCHED!

  2. I'll take your word for it, Holden!

Glad you were able to follow the plot.   :)

I'm looking forward to seeing Max Von Sydow in THE FORCE AWAKENS anyway, but I think it would be a nice touch if he plays an established character like Boba Fett.

I'm still hoping that Adam Driver's character Kylo Ren will be the son of Princess Leia and Han Solo and thus the grandson of Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader.

  3. I see the original actor for this part, Jeremy Bulloch is still with us.

According to the source of the rumor, Boba Fett's appearance was altered by "cybernetic modifications" necessary after the injuries he suffered from his encounter with the Sarlaac in RETURN OF THE JEDI.

Jeremy Bulloch's face was never revealed in either THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK or RETURN OF THE JEDI since Boba Fett was always wearing his signature armor in those movies.

In the prequel ATTACK OF THE CLONES, it was revealed that Boba Fett was a clone of Jango Fett. Therefore, the adult Boba (without "modifications") would look exactly like his "father" Jango (who was played by Temuera Morrison in ATTACK OF THE CLONES).

  4. So which of them are you a completist for?

If it's DeWilde he did an episode of the 1970 TV series The Young Rebels -- a hilarious attempt to exploit youth culture by equating it with the American Revolution -- where he plays Nathan Hale.

While I like Carol Lynley, I want to see BLUE DENIM primarily for Brandon deWilde.

Thank you for the inforrmation on THE YOUNG REBELS episode he appeared in.

I'd never heard of that series, but I am definitely going to look for that episode..

  5. I see that 'Brainstorm' is listed in my public library's DVD catalogue.

Maybe I'll take it out and see what goes on with the picture. I've not yet seen a DVD that came out windowboxed on my widescreen tv.

I would be curious to hear about the formatting of the DVD release.

When BRAINSTORM aired last week on TCM Ben Mankiewicz did explain in his introductory comments Trumbull's use of Super Panavision for the virtual reality sequences (experienced through the scientists' device)  and 35 mm for the "real world."

There was no commentary when the movie aired as a last minute replacement for NOTHING LASTS FOREVER.

  6. Thought it was very cool that guest programmer Edgar Wright mentioned that he had spoken to Malcolm McDowell and informed him that he had selected this to be shown on TCM, and that MM considered this to be one of his favorite films.

Edgar Wright was one of the best guest programmers TCM has ever had.

His commentary went beyond the typical superficial remarks and I liked all his choices except for SUPER COPS.

  7. She was gorgeous in that.  But I read a biography a few years ago that said she suffered from eating disorders for many years, even during her exercise tapes era, I believe.  By the way, I tried one of her tapes and injured my neck.  They're not for the weak of heart!

My mother, aunt and even my grandmother used to workout to some of Jane Fonda's workouts.

My aunt especially really got into them.

Some of the workouts were pretty intense.

I thought Jane Fonda suffered from bulimia before the workout era.

Max von Sydow night!  Now here is someone who deserves an Academy lifetime achievement award for his 60+ year film career.

8 p.m.  Hawaii (1966) One of Max’s best lead performances in the English language.  This would make a good double bill with Charlton Heston's The Hawaiians some day.

3:15  a.m.  The Emigrants.  Maybe one of these days TCM will show the Jan Troell sequel, The New Land (1972)

MIA is Max’s best screen performance: Pelle the Conqueror (1987).

Max has enough Foreign and English language films up his sleeve to be Star of the Month.

Although Max Von Sydow's role in the upcoming STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS has not been officially revealed, it is currently rumored that he will be playing Boba Fett.

George Lucas has said that Boba Fett did not die in the Sarlaac pit, into which he fell in RETURN OF THE JEDI.

  9. I don't know what anybody saw for sure, but I imagine if somebody saw the "items in question" it depended on where they saw the movie.

Being a European film , such shots would have been acceptable over there and I'll bet it wasn't a body double either.  Still, it was pretty common, in the sixties, to do a little editing with something like that for the American release, especially if the film was being distributed by a major studio and was going to have a wide release in mainstream theaters, as opposed to a limited "art house' release. No question that the TV and airline versions would have been cut.

Then again, maybe the original editing of that sequence was so good that, much like the shower scene in PSYCHO, audiences only thought that they saw something that they really didn't.

Hmm. I haven't seen BARBARELLA  in years, but maybe I better check it out.....just out of curiosity, of course.

The version that aired on TCM recently definitely showed the "items in questions" very clearly during the opening credit sequence.

The shots were brief, but there was one that lingered on a n-i-p-p-p-l-e for a few seconds.

  10. Someone posted on these boards (and I haven't been able to find the post) that he imagined seeing Jane Fonda's b-r-e-a-s-t-s during the opening of BARBARELLA when he first saw the movie as a kid.

I've just watched the opening of BARBARELLA for the first time (DVRed it from TCM) and there are definitely a few shots of her b-r-e-a-s-t-s.

Perhaps they are the b-r-e-a-s-t-s of her body double, but based on the shots (there's a shot with her brushing her hair from her face with her hand) they appear to be her own.

  11. Some guesses for #1:

    Ben-TOR

Screenwriter Gore Vidal's comments about the gay subtext in Ben-TOR are very interesting. Apparently Vidal and director William Wyler kept Charlton Heston out of the loop regarding the gay backstory.  Tor Johnson, on the other hand, was privy to to the information and plays the "secret love" angle to the hilt.

  12.

Thank you very much Holden for that input.

I really like this movie, another great one from Billy Wilder, and likewise, another great performance by William Holden, and all others.

It always amazes me how Wilder, a native Austrian, was able to write such right-on American dialogue in his scripts.

But, maybe I shouldn't be surprized, at that. Being from somewhere else sometimes allows a person to better focus on little nuances and inflections that others overlook, or take for granted.

Regardless, sure don't want to wait another 4-5 years before TCM shows it again.

    DGF said:

It's been shown many times by TCM, possibly even as an Essential.

Okay, my bad, I see that it was aired on TCM in Februray 2011, over 4 years ago.

And maybe before 2008. So I guess that must be a lot.... for some.

    Stephan55, it's not your bad.

    You were correct.

SUNSET BLVD is shown very rarely on TCM.

  13. Tor Johnson wasn't just the big star of expensive, crowd-pleasing blockbusters, but in his days as a freelancer, on occasion he would actively seek out edgier, indie, and in general smaller scope films, to balance out the big ticket items. Possibly in anticipation of the Supreme Court ruling in anticipation of marriage equality, some of these titles have popped into the Top Ten.

    1.

  14. Someone who gave Ivan Jandl of The Search a run for his money for the best juvenile performance of 1948 was Bobby Henrey as Felipe in The Fallen idol.

Yes, Bobby Henrey was fantastic in THE FALLEN IDOL.

Carol Reed was able to get that amazing performance from Henrey, who according to most accounts had no talent for acting.

4:45  Indiscretion of an American Wife (1954)  I doubt very much that this is going to be this year’s restoration of the De Sica film.  It looks to have a maximum running time of 75 minutes.

It is playing as Terminal Station at the Toronto Cinematheque in August at 82 minutes with ‘missing footage and original title restored.’

    You were right.

The restored version did not air.

  16.

Regarding Bewitched--in B,B and C, the witches all seemed to live in Greenwich Village and exist in the mortal world (Jillian puts the spell on Shep becasue of an old college rivalry, she has a shop in town, they frequent the Zodiac Club etc). In Bewitched, Samantha seems to be the only one who lives and works in the real world. Where do the others live? It's been a long time since I watched it--was there some sort of alternate world for them? I con;t remember, but there must have been?

Here's what Endora said about where witches live:

"We are quicksilver, a fleeting shadow, a distant sound... our home has no boundaries beyond which we cannot pass. We live in music, in a flash of color... we live on the wind and in the sparkle of a star!"
