  1. 1959's BLUE DENIM was controversial its day, dealing as it did with teenage pregnancy, underage marriage, and especially, back alley abortion. These days, it may be a bit dated, but it still is fairly engrossing. It's on this week on FMC, where it should be repeated.in the near future.

In the original play BLUE DENIM the girl actually has the (then illegal) abortion while in the movie adaptation she does not.

  2. Well, as a noted  fan of 1960's tv: you are really missing out. I grew up watching (edited) reruns on The Family Channel, which I loved, and then the series disappeared for years, only to have every epside show up unedited on youtube for a two year period (it was great to see many of the celebrity cameos and scenes that TFC had cut in order to cram in more ads). I even got my two nieces HIGHLY addicted to the show (it has that kind of spirit, it just pulls you in).

You really don't realize how much is edited from syndicated television shows until you see the complete episodes as they aired during their original broadcast runs.

When watching my BEWITCHED and THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW episodes on DVD  I am amazed at how much great stuff was cut to make room for more commercials on Nick at Nite.

  3. I remember "Go Ask Alice".  It was another ABC Movie of the Week offering.  That series really put out some good stuff on Tuesday nights in the early '70's!  Everyone in school seemed to be talking about it the next day.

Is GO ASK ALICE based on the book by the same name?

The book was supposedly the diary or journal of a girl but it was later exposed as a work of fiction.

  4. are you kidding me? I would think you of all people would know that he was the second of three Mr Freezes: the first being George Sanders and the third being Ely wallach. But Otto was absolutely the best IMO and the two episodes he were he was in- specifically episode 51 and 52 GREEN ICE and DEEP FREEZE are two of the best of the whole series. They also feature Marie Windsor in a small role and Dee hartford who was Groucho Marx's sister in law at the time.

    BLAM!

    I recited that from memory.

    ZAP!

    I'm so alone.

    B O F F !

for some reason the auto sensor has a problem with the word "B O F F."

I've never seen many episodes of the BATMAN series, but I do remember seeing a video clip with Mr. Freeze with a German accent and I thought I recalled that it was stated on the commentary that it was Otto Preminger.

    I'm glad you confirmed it.

I had no idea there were three different Mr. Freezes in the series.

  5. Mmm, intersting p'raps, but not surprising. To have had such a gay sensibility (and admirable compassion towards the cause), Otto apparently loved the ladies...And the ladies loved Otto right back (once they learned to walk again, I imagine.)

ps- in searching for Otto Quotes, I came across the non sequitor with regard to this thread, but gem nonetheless that I must share:

Otto on Marilyn Monroe: "A vacuum cleaner with nipples."*

*works even better if you imagine it with a German accent.

Didn't Otto Preminger play Mr. Freeze on that campy BATMAN series from the 1960s?

  6. "I live in the present. When I finish a film, it is behind me.

My reward is in my work, not in a lot of old memories."

                                                                                                      -Otto Preminger

It was interesting to learn that Otto Preminger was the father of Gyspy Rose Lee's son.

  7. So true. I feel so bad for her, and embarrassed for her, despite having a sort.of satisfaction for her receiving her comeuppance. Beautifully directed, written and played, I love DODSWORTH for the ambivalent feelings it creates in you.

The ambivalence of DODSWORTH is one of the most powerful things about the movie.

It has a very precode feel to it.

  9. I posted this song before in another thread.

(I didn't realize that this Favorite Music thread existed until recently. )

"Morning Please Don't Come" is a duet between Dusty Springfield and her brother Tom Springfield (aka Dion O'Brien).

The song was written by Tom Springfield.

Dusty is one of my favorite singers of all-time.

I love this song and its sentiment.

  10. I see that THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK is scheduled to air on September 29.

This movie wasn't included as part of the tribute to Shelley Winters on her Summer Under The Stars day.

I wish that Susan Strasberg (who originated the role on Broadway) had played Anne Frank in the movie adaptation.

Millie Perkins (in my opinion) is not very good in the role.

  11. Haven't read this entire thread, does anyone know if SUNSET BLVD (1950) is going to be aired as an "Essential" sometime this year?

They keep showing excerpts from it in the Essentials previews, and I can't remember the last time (if ever) TCM has shown it, so it certainly looks like its overdue for a showing?

SUNSET BLVD is airing on TCM as an Essential on December 5.

It's a been quite awhile since this movie has aired on TCM.

I think it was last aired as part of the Essentials when Alec Baldwin was the co-host.

  12. Yes he does.  I think you have already mentioned the story practically word-for-word.

On their honeymoon she got really ticked off that people recognized him and not her.  And that was it.  Marriage over.

Does Ernest Borgnine offer any incite in his book as to what drew him and Ethel Merman together to the point that they actually married?

  13. Wallach is simply outstanding. It's like he's giving Gable and Clift an acting lesson. His performance is flawless throughout the film.

Eli Wallach was a brilliant actor.

Like his wife Anne Jackson, he preferred working on stage than in movies, often turning down film offers in favor of more satisfying stage work (even if it was for less money).

He said that movies were like "calendar art" compared to the "great paintings" of stage work.

I am grateful that he did so some film work so that his brillaince is available for us to see today.

  14. Probably because it's a 20th Century Fox film, but it seems that this month TCM is showing quite a few Fox films.

    Yes indeed.

TCM has been showing LAURA quite a lot after years of never showing it.
