  1. The transformation of Fran is one of the things that sets this movie apart.    I was drawn to Fran because I had empathy for her as it related to her midlife crisis.    But as the story unfolds and the traits of selfishness, materialism and inconsideration come forward, this empathy vanished.    By the time Sam moves in with Edith I was clearly in their corner and the ending was just the icing on the cake.

It's a testament to Ruth Chatterton that the audience is still able to feel some sympathy for Fran when Kurt's mother refuses to accept her as a future wife for her son. The sympathy, of course, is mixed with some feeling that Fran is getting what she deserves.

  2. Love that no closeup of Marilyn (can you image that, well that scene worked better without a close up of Marilyn), we can see it from the others POV. Did you see how Gable was melting a bit?

You're right. In the three shot of Montgomery Clift, Clark Gable and Eli Wallach we can see the effect that Marilyn Monroe is having on each of the three men.

Three shots are used very rarely in movies.

  3. I got Ernest Borgnine's autobiography at a book signing so the signing part and meeting Mr. Borgnine and having my picture taken with him was really the highlight.

I Don't Want to set the World on Fire, I Just Want to Keep My Nuts Warm is the full title of the book.

His industry recollections are done in a journal format where he responds to a title with a few anecdotes.  It is an amusing light quick read.

Does Ernest Borgnine discuss his marriage to Ethel Merman in his book?

I presume he doesn't do the blank page thing like she did.

  4. Yves Montand (1921-1991).  Started out as a French crooner of romantic songs before getting into films.

His dramatic breakthrough or revelation may have come with H.G. Couzot's 1953, The Wages of Fear.

My favourite Montand performances are Wages, La Guerre Est Finie (1966), Grand Prix (1966), Manon of the Spring (1986) and Jean de Florette (1986).

I've only seen Yves Montand in GOODBYE AGAIN and ON A CLEAR DAY YOU SEE FOREVER.

I liked him in both movies.

In ON A CLEAR DAY YOU SEE FOREVER, the part where he sings "Come Back To Me," trying to get Barbra Streisand to, well, come back via telepathy always cracks me up ---- the way his voice emanates from various people (and even a dog!) that Streisand encounters in NYC.

  5. Oh, I know they werent twins in the original movie, but I wondered since Sean Young played both roles in the remake if they were twins in the book. But it sounds like they were just sisters in the remake also

I don't remember if they were twins or just sisters in the version from the 1990s.

  6. Who indeed?

I'm talking about our very own TCM Message Board Moderators.

I know practically nothing about them. Does anyone?

How many are there? Do they confer with each other over message board issues? Do they ever disagree? Do they have a boss? Are they paid for what they do? And most of all,how do they decide which actions to take here, re. making admonishing comments, deleting, locking, assigning warning points, etc.

Do they love movies,or could they be just anybody, maybe some of them don't even watch TCM themselves(seems unlikely, though, that they wouldn't.)

Oh, there is one I know of,, also a long-time poster here. She helped me recently with a sign-in problem I was having, and very helpful she was, too.  Thanks again to her !

But for the  rest of them, I know practically nothing .  And yet they have so much power here !  This is not a criticism, nor is it a "suck-up". It's neither. I just think they're a mysterious bunch.

When the new boards were announced (just before the old version of the new boards went down for the upgrade) the name of the company operating and maintaining the new boards was given. I don't recall the name, but maybe it's avaialble somewhere on the boards.

I presume the moderators work for that company either as employees or contractors.

  8. That tidies things, thank you!

Oh, and the majordomo's name is Desmond!  Riiiiight.....

Yes, his name is indeed Desmond.

(I was going to post that connection at some point.)

    Or should I say "DESMOND!!!!!"

  9. Dorothy Adams, one of the best uncredited actresses there was working. IMDB her, she's in a ton of stuff, much of it uncredited (she did Fallen Angel for Preminger and was in Sitting Pretty with Clifton Webb as a character intriguingly named "Miss Goul" but her scenes were cut.)

She is the sole female cast member of a WONDERFUL Fox film from 1949 called Down to the Sea in Ships about 19th century New England Whalers starring Lionel Barrymore and Richard Widmark- cannot recommend that one highly enough.

DOWN TO THE SEA IN SHIPS also features one my favorite actors Dean Stockwell.

I need to watch it again and pay more attention to Dorothy Adams.

    Thanks for this information.

  10. In her post-Bewitched days, she had three straight hits with "Mrs. Sundance" (an ABC Movie of the Week), "A Case of Rape", and "The Legend of Lizzie Borden".   Those rate as my faves.  According to her IMDB bio, it came down to her and Eva Marie Saint for the role of Edie Doyle in "On The Waterfront".  Elia Kazan picked Saint for the part, and she won an Oscar for her work.

I watched THE LEGEND OF LIZZIE BORDEN on You Tube.

Lizzie's father should have left those birds alone.

  11. John Howard Davies (1939-2011) the British child actor and star of Oliver Twist, The Rocking Horse Winner, and Tom Brown's Schooldays went on to have a hugely prolific career as a producer and director of drama for the BBC.

I wish TCM would air TOM BROWN'S SCHOOLDAYS (1951) or TOM BROWN'S SCHOOL DAYS (1940).

There's a TCM article fior the 1940 movie (which features Freddie Bartholomew) so it must have aired at least once on the channel.

  12. The author doesnt name drop much. It's all about Marlo.

It's interesting that Desmond says he wasn't familiar with Marlo Thomas before he started working with her while he was aware of Phil Donahue.

Desmond knew there was a famous florist in the NYC area named Marlo so he though perhaps "Marlo Thomas" was the Marlo from Flowers By Marlo.

He says THAT GIRL to his knowledge did not air in the UK (where he grew up).
