  1. Frisco Jenny is my favorite pre-code. It's a kind of inverted Madame X: instead of her son being the lawyer who gets her off, her son is the prosecutor who sends her to the gallows. And I learned some history from the film: the SF earthquake was caused by the slap Jenny got from her Dad early in the film.

The final scene -- Helen Jerome Eddy burning the clippings, shot from the other side of the fireplace -- is heartbreaking; one of the great final scenes.

Ruth Chatterton is another actor that TCM introduced me to.

I love her in FRISCO JENNY and also in DODSWORTH.

Her character in DODSWORTH is clearly supposed to be viewed negatively by the audience.

It's a testament to Ruth Chatterton's skill at creating a real human being that her character Fran is able to elicit any sympathy at all from the audience (notably in the scene where Kurt's mother refuses to accept her as a future wife for her son).

  2. Thanks all for reminding me about Merman's autobiography. I had read that over 30 years ago and remember it as insightful & funny. Better try finding a new copy of it. Totally forgot she was married to Borgnine (guess she did too) but how could you forget her in MAD MAD WORLD? She was one of the principles.

I recall howling over her being turned upside down & seeing her girdle! THAT was a scream to a teen age girl. I liked girdles....now they're called "spanx" and are lycra tubes-not nearly as funny! Underwear used to be called "foundations".

I also remember reading about her typing (she started as a secretary) and thinking, "If I can't be the best Broadway singer...I'll be the LOUDEST". Her idea to create something different about her persona stuck with me and served me well in my career. No, I'm not the loudest, but I do have a "trademark" that others imitate now 20 years later. Thanks, Ethel.

I loved Ethel Merman on the episode of THE LUCY SHOW called "Ethel Merman and the Boy Scout Show."

It always cracks me up that the Cub Scouts (Lucy's son Jerry is a member of the Danfield troop) are clamoring for Ethel Merman of all people to sing at their charity show.

THE LUCY SHOW is another one of my favorite Nick At Nite shows.

I have all 6 seasons on DVD.

  3. I LOVE Elizabeth Montgomery, Holden. And I mean love.

    She was S-E-X-Y.

I saw her in an Alfred Hitchcock Presents (or was it Karloff's Thriller?) episode with its customary twist ending wherein she is revealed to be not quite the victim we thought.

Hot, hot, hot. What a beauty.

Here's a clip from one of my favorite episodes of BEWICHED, "Hippie Hippie Hooray."

Samantha is pretending to be Serena.

  4. How much does Bewitched owe to Bell, Book and Candle?

Many have suggested I MARRIED A WITCH and BELL, BOOK AND CANDLE as inspiratons for BEWICHED.

While these works also deal with love relationships between witches and mortals, the love in BEWITCHED is not the result of a potion or spell as it is in the other two works.

The witch in BELL, BOOK AND CANDLE does eventually fall in love with the mortal "for real," but the love between Samantha and Darrin on BEWITCHED was never due to the use of magic on Samantha's  part.

  5. Re:  Post #5 (HoldenIsHere).  I can't think of any theatrical films Elizabeth Montgomery appeared in when "Bewitched" ended in 1972, but she had either starring or substantial roles in approx. 20 made-for-television films with all manner of non-comedic subject matter before she died in 1995.

An exception to all those Tv dramas is the 1981 TVM "When the Circus Comes To Town".  It appears to be a lighthearted romance movie from what I've read about it from my reference guides and co-stars Christopher Plummer.

Anyway, I reckon she did re-invent herself . . . to a point.  A lot of those non-comic Tv movies she made in the '70s, '80s and early '90s are still not easily available in 2015 so the memory of her dramatic acting skills is getting distant, I think.  For example, I've no idea where to find a copy of the 1974 Tvm "A Case of Rape".  I never found a homevideo release of it and who knows when last it aired?  If one were to see Liz Montgomery in 2015 it's more than likely to be on re-runs of "Bewitched".

Right, Mr. Gorman. Today's audience will be much more familiar with Elizabeth Montgomery as Samantha (and Serena) on BEWITCHED than with in any of her dramatic work in film or on television. At one point BEWITCHED was the highest rated show on NIck At Nite.

I've sought out her work on YouTube  because I'm a fan of BEWITCHED.

I will admit to owning 2 great books written by Herbie J. Pilato: Bewitched Forever: The Immortal Companion to Television's Most Magical Supernatural Situation Comedy and Twitch Upon a Star: The Bewitched Life and Career of Elizabeth Montgomery.

I recommend these books to fans of BEWITCHED and Elizabeth Montgomery.

Surely one of the blank entries is for TORTIGO.

And what's up with FROM HERE TOR ETERNITY appearing twice on the list?

  7. Personally, I think Eli Wallach's performance is the best in the movie.

But, Marilyn - oh my, how I do love that beautiful, troubled woman.

Supposedly, some audience members laughed at Marilyn Monroe's emotional scene about the horses during the original release of THE MISFITS.

Today, the raw emotional power of her acting in that scene is recognized and appreciated.

  8. And Borgnine has mentioned how grateful he was for it.

He is on record saying that it was her insane jealousy of his successful career that skippered their marriage as soon as the honeymoon.

Yes, the couple's planned honeymoon to Japan, Hong Kong and Honolulu ended after only a day or so in Tokyo.

In an interview later in life, Ernest Borgnine disclosed the details of the honeymoon. He was well known overseas while Ethel Merman was not. The more that Borgenine was recognized the more hurt and angry Merman became. According to Borgenine, Merman took her hurt out on him.

  9. Yes,  in the films I have seen Booth in she is very 'raw' (or as you say 'like I was watching someone living her life,,,'.

This provides the viewer with a strong emotional impact and connection.

Burt Lancaster said that Shirley Booth was the greatest actress he'd ever worked with.

During the making of COME BACK LITTLE SHEBA, Booth remarked that the most of the time she could see Lancaster acting but that once in awhile he would hit a "note of truth" in his performance and she believed that one day he would be a great actor.

  10. All mentioned so far would be great choices. But of course, I'm hoping that it'll.finally be Linda Darnell.

Maybe September 2015 will finally be Linda Darnell's month, Arturo.

I'd also love to see a tribute to Jane Greer, but I don't know if there are enough movies for Jane to be Star of the Month.

  11. I'm a huge BEWITCHED  fan. I grew up watching Nick At Nite and have all 8 seasons with unedited episodes on DVD.

I love Elizabeth Montgomery as Samantha and, of course, as Serena.

After the end of BEWITCHED, Elizabeth Montgomery apparently never played any more comedic roles, focusing instead on very heavy dramatic parts.

There are some clips of her on You Tube as Lizzie Borden that are really good.

  12. Kim Basinger is extremely underated as an actor.

She excels in both dramatic and comedic roles.

Did anyone catch NADINE on TCM  when it aired during the Robert Benton tribute?

She cracks me up every time she says "Vernon Hightower" in that movie .

  13. I would like to see Fred MacMurray.  I first saw him in Double Indemnity and was surprised how he was not at all like Steve Douglas from My Three Sons.  I didn't realize he was so versatile and could play someone as complex as Walter Neff.  I loved how in Double Indemnity, while he is actively committing a crime by participating in this plot to kill his lover Barbara Stanwyck's husband, he also had a vulnerability.  He seemed like he was a good guy that was overcome by lust for Stanwyck and decided to use his knowledge of the insurance system to participate in this plot.  I felt bad for him throughout the film when he is recording his confession for boss Edward G. Robinson.  By the end, not only did he help kill Stanwyck's husband, he killed Stanwyck too--two murders.

Since then, I've seen him in a wide variety of roles, from a couple of his comedic turns with Claudette Colbert (The Egg and I & No Time For Love), a romantic turn in Alice Adams with Katharine Hepburn and an antagonist role in Dive Bomber with Errol Flynn.  He demonstrated that he was adept at all these genres.

Yes, I was also surprised to see how versatile Fred MacMurray was.

I really liked him in A MILLONAIRE FOR CHRISTY.

That movie also features a great performance by Eleanor Parker, another actor that I was introduced to by TCM.
