I met Jacobi once, very briefly. I've seen him on stage several times -- in Ivanov; Much Ado; Cyrano; Richard II; Breaking the Code (about Alan Turing). I hear he's going to play Mercutio in R&J with Branagh's company next year. Imagine, a Mercutio nearly 80 years old! That will be interesting.
That is an interesting concept having Mercutio being so much older than Romeo.
I'm not sure if the text mentions them being contemporaries but I presumed they were (with Mercutio perhaps a bit older).
I love Derek Jacobi's turn as a bad Shakespearean actor on FRASIER.

Killed on the toilet, wasn't it?
I'm not sure. I saw the movie once when I was rather young.
Maybe I need to watch it again from an adult's perspective.
My mother's exasperation at "dead people coming back to life" stuck with me more than the movie.
Probably the reason I thoiugh that both John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson were killed was because my mother definitely said "dead people."

I'm reading Ava Gardner's autobiography Ava:My Story right now. I'm at the point where she's just made The Killers and her star is on the rise. She's divorced Mickey Rooney and Artie Shaw but hasn't met Frank Sinatra yet. Gardner's story is really interesting. After I'm finished reading this book, I may try to seek out more Ava Gardner performances. I really wanted to read this book because I wanted to know why she married Mickey Rooney. She didn't mention anything about the size of Mickey's "appendage" (which is what I thought most endeared him to all these women) but apparently she fell in love with his energy and personality. They were 21 and 19 when they married and were only married for a year or two. Mickey apparently was just too young to understand that when you're married, you're supposed to stop dating. For some reason, I always thought that Ava was some kind of floozy, but as I'm reading her autobiography, she apparently was a very well-mannered conservative Southern Girl, until she got more into the booze and more into Hollywood.
Does Ava Gardner discuss the psychological abuse she suffered from Artie Shaw in the book?
I've read interviews with her where she talks about how he would belittle and demean her.
In one interview she said the emotional abuse from Artie Shaw hurt her more than the physical abuse from George C. Scott.

Well, if it's any indication, there's a non-movie forum that I go to sometimes that dropped post counts. The initial result, as expected was a lot of complaints from folks with the highest count and a drop in posts, but as things settled down there was a big improvement in the overall quality of posts.
Now posts are more topic oriented, and less confrontational. Not only that, but most of the troublemakers drifted off and there's actually been a noticable increase in new posters. It would be interesting to see what would happen on these boards.
I hope the TCM message board drops post counts and views.
Why does that information need to be displayed?
It's not like there's any money being paid to the posters per post or per view.
I'll take quality over quantity any day.

I thought she was pretty good with Kevin Kline in I Love You to Death
Kevin Kline is one of those actors that I can see tell is a good actor but for some reason I generally do not enjoy his work.

Ah man. My library system doesn't have this book! I'll have to check the other library system of my hometown of Salem to see if they have this book. Maybe the capital of Oregon can pull through for me. It's just as well though. I have 6 other books checked out from the library right now. I don't know what I was thinking.
Yes, I was reading Vera Capary's novel Laura that was the basis of the movie.
I've read a lot about he book and have read excerpts but have never read the book itself.
I'm thinking That Girl and Phil will take my attention away from Laura for awhile, but That Girl and Phil will probably be a fast read.

I was just looking at the August 22nd schedule for Marlene Dietrich day and wondered what TCM usually shows when it airs The Blue Angel - the English language or the German language version?
Does anyone know what they showed the last time. Usually a good indication.
The last time TCM aired THE BLUE ANGEL ---which was on May 17 --- it was the German language version with English subtitles.

Jackson was killed in PF? I know Travolta was killed by Bruce Willis (yea, after doing #2!), but I don't recall Jackson being killed in the film.
Yeah I think maybe you're right that it was just Travolta who killed and then "was alive again" in PULP FICTION.
I've only seen the movie once.
-
That book looks amazing. Maybe I should try to get a copy and you, me and Hibi can form a "That Girl and Phil" book club.
That Girl and Phil is now awaiting pickup by me at the library.
I'll probably pick it up tomorrow.

I just found the time to actually peruse what movies were going to be on in August.
Here's what I'm looking forward to:
Aug 2 (Olivia de Havilland)
It's Love I'm After
The Male Animal
Light in the Piazza
The Olivia de Havilland movie I'm most looking forward to is HUSH HUSH SWEET CHARLOTTE.
Agnes Moorehead cracks me up in that movie.

I know it has been mentioned here, but have you seen The Matchmaker yet? Booth is very good in it and Paul Ford is terrific.
I've seen parts of THE MATCHMAKER when it aired on PBS, but I've never seen the movie in its entirety.
I would love for TCM to air it.
-
And on Ann Margrock day The Cincinnati Kid is being replaced. Ironic as it was directed by a Canadian.
What's airing in its place?

Were there many bombs - or just one big one?
I wish people would take Liza'a advice:
Don't drop bombs, baby.
Don't drop bombs.
Just stay calm, baby.
No more bombs . . .

Same here. Was hooked from the beginning. She was so wonderful and I would like to see her in something else.
Sorry Nipkow, I do hope your movie is shown. There are at least two more that would like to see it.
When I saw Shirley Booth in the opening scene of COME BACK, LITTLE SHEBA I felt like I was watching someone living her life not an actor speaking scripted dialogue.
And I too hope HOT SPELL is aired as on TCM one day.
-
I know what you're saying. She reminded me of an innocent little girl and I felt sorry for her so much throughout the movie. She really stuck by him though. I've probably watched it 10 times. Guess you can tell it's a favorite.
Her first scene where she showed the room to the boarder really pulled me in.
It was like watching a real person not a movie character.
-
Holden I too really would love to see this movie. I've loved Shirley Booth ever since I saw Come Back Little Sheba. Wouldn't mind seeing About Mrs. Leslie as well.
Shirley Booth truly blew me away in COME BACK LITTLE SHEBA.
She was like a real person existing in the scripted world of a movie.
When her character told the mailman about her husband's drinking problem I reacted to her as if she was a real person, not a character in a movie.
"Why did you do that?"
-
if my timely allusions to this rare film have spurred curiosity in those who have never seen it. it is out there. in 9 parts, mp4 format, at veehd dot com.

Thanks for this information, NipkowDisc.
I truly want to see HOT SPELL now and you are the one who brought the existence of this movie to my attention.
-
Hot Spell is available on dvd from some outfit called bongo bird. I found the review at the top amusing.

That's a good price too.
I wonder what the quality of the DVD is.

This really has nothing to do with anything, but if you say "my cocaine" it totally sounds like how Michael Caine says his name with the accent.
(try it.)
Oh wow, you're right.
-
It appears that Maltin's college interns do most of his work.
The issue is not the review .
It's linking the wrong review to a movie on the schedule.

The well-meaning political misfire movie that I LOVE ABOVE ALL OTHERS though is TOMORROW: THE WORLD! starring Frederic March and (I think?) Priscilla Lane as a couple who adopt a Hitler youth. Hilarity- albeit of the unintentional variety- ensues.
iT'S BEEN TOO TOO TOO TOO LONG SINCE tcm LAST AIRED THAT ONE.
I saw TOMORROW, THE WORLD! when it aired on TCM a few years ago and, yes, it was oddly amusing.
Agnes Moorehead is also in it.
-
It is hilarious, Holden. Majordomos of the world unite! Ah, the days before employees had to sign all those pesky forms muzzling them from speaking about their celebrity employers.
I like Marlo Thomas but still think the book will be fun.

The chart is showing what percentage each country has of worldwide Tor Johnson fan clubs.
Yay, Canada. We love Tor the most.
I think that is the answer.

I would love to see a tribute to Shirley Booth, but I'm not sure if there are enough movies with her to support a Star Of The Month tribute.
One movie I'd like to see on TCM is THE MATCHMAKER, based on the play by Thormnton Wilder and the basis for the musical HELLO, DOLLY!
Shirley Booth played Dolly Levi. Anthony Perkins is also in THE MATCHMAKER.
This movie has aired on PBS before, but I don't think it's ever aired on TCM.

Orson Welles' Prosthetic Nose
in General Discussions
Posted
There's a piece that airs on TCM where Orson Welles's daughter talks about enjoying seeing her father in THE THIRD MAN because he has his own nose.
