  1.

The history of digital recording is fascinating. There is a great deal of irony in it's beginnings - i.e., (better-than-digital) analog first, analog next, back to digital (now).

Sorry to ramble on.. you got me to thinking..

    No apology necessary.

I agree and appreciate your comments on the history of digital recording.

  2. incorrect. prior to it's disappearance from tcm now more than ten years ago  tcm had been showing hot spell regularly.

I know this because I watched hot spell every time tcm would show it.

It's interesting that there's no TCM article for HOT SPELL, which suggests that it never aired on the channel.

Maybe you saw it on AMC.

  3. just read the amazon reviews for THAT GIRL AND PHIL.

    Favorite quote:

Marlo suddenly burst into tears and cried out, "Am I really such a ****?"

Her secretary held her hand and pacified her without saying a word, but when Marlo looked at me for reassurance, I said, "Well, it does appear so," and went about my duties for the day.

    Love. It.

    I love the book cover.

  4. I dunno. I think it's a real testament to her powers as an actress that she comes across so memorably as Mrs. Voorheis; in fact one could very well make the argument that a good deal of FRIDAY THE 13TH's staying power in the national psyche is due to Palmer's performance. She did the film because she needed money for a new car and could have quite easily not invested herself as fully as she did in the part, but she did and thus is one of the only things people remember about the movie (which is actually pretty dull and unmemorable outside of Palmer's scenes.)

You have to admire anyone, no matter what their profession, who gives their all when the circumstances could well persuade them not to.

I read that she supposedly said about  FRIDAY THE 13TH that no one will want to see "this sh*t" but the movie was a big hit.

Her commitment to role of Jason's mother (that is, her not just phoning in the performance) helped make the movie memorable.

  5. The lovely Betsy Palmer, who graced stage and screen, has died in Connecticut. Though many of us first saw her on television, particularly on her regular gig on "I've Got a Secret," Ms. Palmer performed on Broadway and in the movies. Late in her career, she played a memorable role in Friday the 13th. Later still, she was a regular on "Knots Landing." She was 88.

What role did she play on KNOTS LANDING?

I used watch that show on SoapNet in the early 2000s.

  6. Wow, that was one small window, wasn't it.

Yes, it was a very small window indeed.

I hope the formatting is corrected for the next airing of BRAINSTORM.

As I stated before I don't think this boxing issue was due to the print but rather something that was done in the airing because the first few minutes switched back and forth between letter boxing and window boxing before finally settling on window boxing.

  7. Thanks for posting this article.

COME BACK, LITTLE SHEBA was a movie that I'd wanted to see for awhile.

When it finally aired on TCM a couple of years ago, I was blown away by Shirley Booth's performance in that movie.

It was another example where an actor seems to be a real person living in the fictional scripted world of a movie.

I had a similar reaction to seeing Anna Magnani in THE ROSE TATTOO.

Interstingly, both of those movies also featured Burt Lancaster.

  8. I still smile when I remember my mother's reaction to PULP FICTION.

She was really getting into the movie up until the part where Samuel L. Jackson amd John Travolta were alive again in a scene after having been killed in an earlier one.

I tried to explain the concept of non-linear narrative to her, but she said "Well that's just dumb."

  9. ooh I haven't seen that one.  I've seen him in some other movies, but imo, he's best in The Wizard of Oz.  The other film I saw him in I thought he was kind of annoying.  I just can't picture him and Doris together.

The only thing I've seen Ray Bolger in is THE WIZARD OF OZ as the Scarecow (and the guy in Kansas).

  10. I just watched that YouTuber.. WOW!  Thanks for the heads up.

The visual experience will be terrific. The enhanced audio will be booming 7.x digital surround sound which I, to this day after seeing a dozen or so contemporary films, do not like. I like the nuances the new surround sound systems bring out, but it's those booming, thundering, blasting sounds I dislike so much. I feel as if there's an earthquake happening while I'm trying to watch a film movie.

Just think... not too many years from now, people will no longer use the word "film" in relation to movies.

Yes, I think the visual experience will be amazing.

Interesting comment about the word "film."

I know a few people who use the word "taping" when tallking about recording a TV program when they really mean "DVRing"

  11. I love this description for Gene Tierney's day:

    Plymouth Adventure (1952)

Epic dramatization of the Pilgrims' journey to the new world on the Mayflower.

DirClarence Brown CastLowell Gilmore , Tommy Ivo , John Dehner .

    C-106 mins, CC,

What a treat this will be, tuning in to see those guys instead of Tracy and Tierney.

TCM's short blurbs only list three actors, but it's odd that neither Gene Tierney nor Spencer Tracy were selected as one of the three.

  12. Like any good ex husband/butler should.

    They are a rare breed.

    Yes.

Have you read Marlo Thomas's former major domo's book That Girl and Phil?

It paints her in a very unflattering light (to put it mildly).
