  1. Is that Desi Arnaz Jr siiting to Liza's left in the audience, the one who kisses her when she's announced as the winner?

I know that her father Vincente Minnelli is siiting to her right.

I never received a response to this question so I researched it on my own and discovered that Liza Minnelli and Desi Arnaz Jr were actually engaged for a time. Lucille Ball encouraged the relationship and was even okay with the two living together.

Lucy did not like (to put it mildly) Desi Jr's prior girlfiend Patty Duke.

  2. I never liked the word "levity." It's sort of like "bemused."  The sound and meaning don't seem to go together.

This reminds me of the xplanation of the meaning of  "enervating" by Barbra Streisand's character in THE OWL AND THE PUSSYCAT.

  3. I just realized that it was 25 years ago that Madonna's "Vogue" reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song, with a stylish video directed by David Fincher ("The Social Network," "Gone Girl"), mentions more than a half-dozen screen heavyweights who are "Summer Under the Stars" regulars. Four of them are being honored with tribute days in August 2015.

    "Beauty's where you find it . . "

  4. Geraldine Page is just underrated. When she was alive, she was the top. Many considered her to be the greatest actress living. Page never gave a bad performance.

Yes, Geraldine Page is the best example of the power of American acting based on Stanislavski's techniques (commonly referred to as "method" acting).

Her work is more consistently better than even that of Marlon Brando.

Someone so brilliantly creative as Brando needed better material than Hollywood often gave him.

It's not surprising that Brando became very bored later in his career.

  5. Look down... I've already posted that link, a few posts down. t's an excellent, pretty comprehensive article.  :)

Thanks to both Swithin and Bogie for posting this very interesting article.

I'm still looking forward to Swithin's comments.

  6.

College featured Irene Ryan (Granny in The Beverly Hillbillies) and a young David Janssen in bit parts.  Maureen O'Sullivan must have been pretty fed up with working with monkeys at this point.  Edmund Gwenn tries his very best to elevate the film as is usual.

The kidnapping of Bonzo to keep him out of the big football game is reminiscent of Horse Feathers.

I'd be curious to see Irene Ryan in a non-Granny role.

  7. TCM Underground tweeted this on 5-28.....

"Due to a rights issue we very unfortunately have to pull NOTHING LASTS FOREVER scheduled for this week. Hope to get it back on the air soon."

But it's still on the online schedule, so don't know WHAT IS GOING ON????

    - Okay, my DirectTV is now showing "Brainstorm" ('83) is airing in that timeslot

    PHOOEY!!

BRAINSTORM is also scheduled to air on June 25.

  8. Come on. No matter how many times they show this movie, it still never makes sense. Like The Big Sleep.

Plus, like Dargo said, there's that zither music.

I think this is the one that Orson Welles's daughter likes because he used his own nose.

  9. OMG!! Alan Arkin day is fantastic!

    Little Murders!!

    Little Murders, everybody!

We were posting about that one not so long ago.

Please God, let Canadians have this one.

Yes, I'm very much looking forward to Alan Arkin's day.

I've been wanting to see LITTLE MURDERS for awhile.

Alan Arkin directed the movie as well as acted in it.

The cast also includes Elliott Gould, Vincent Gardenia and Donald Sutherland.

The movie is adapted from the play by Jules Feiffer which lasted for only 7 performances on Broadway but was later successfully produced in London.

I love those American movies from the early 1970s.

  10. I haven't watched all of THE STAR yet but I did watch the part about the screen test., which was the part that I remember most about the movie from the time I saw it years ago.

I think Bette Davis's reaction to seeing the footage was done very well. There are only a few cuts to the footage so most of the reaction is conveyed on Bette Davis's face.

  11. Not sure. But I'm guessing it's in his contracts. This from 2013:

Fogle has become a mini-empire, starring in more than 300 Subway TV commercials; writing one autobiographical book and considering a second book aimed at children; emerging as a motivational speaker who pulls in $5,000 to $10,000 for personal appearances while amassing a net worth that may exceed $15 million, estimates celebritynetworth.com.

I had no idea.He seemed to have zero charisma in those Subway commercials.

  12. Tor Johnson stars in SUMO LIKES IT HOT. He played a WW2 Japanese fighter on awol,.and hiding out in plain sight as a sumo wrestler. When the military police finally caught up with him, and he was brought to trial, the judge asked him why he went into hiding. His defense was, "I was disgraced,.and so I had to commit the ultimate solution. And I was NOT about to commit Hello Kitty, poor thing!".

  13. I still say the greatest mystery in all of television is the very existence of MAMA'S FAMILY.

I actually liked the first two seasons of MAMA'S FAMILY .

(The first season was actually only a half season.)

The character of Mama was supposed to be a very mean-spirited woman but by having her as the central character of the series the writers apparently felt that she had be made more likeable so she became just sassy rather than mean.

The later seasons (with the addition of Bubba) actually did better in the ratings than the first two seasons.
