  1. Diane did have her own unique look which did incorporate many male clothing elements. The ties, the hats and all. Thanks, Miles and is your wife still cheating on you?
  2. Hi, SansFin! Good choice and when Marlena wore a tuxedo, she wore it well.
  3. You read my mind, FL because seeing Betty Hutton in AGYG is what made me think about Tomwomen! She's such a grown up tomboy in that film, but she also does clean up well. Not many actresses would have been willing to dress down like that with no make-up I think. Your other choices are fab also!
  4. Hi, GPF! Just curious, do you like "All The President's Men"?
  5. Though I don't like smarmy men in real life, in the movies, I adore them since it really is all about good acting and being able to portray such creeps. For some reason, I never think of the word "smarmy" as pertaining to women, though I suppose it could. But thinking about Marmee from "Little Women" made me think that if she married a man named Smarmy, she would be Marmee Smarmy, which unfortunately made me think of this topic. Even Stephen Foster was interested in depicting this type of man with his song "Way Down Upon the Smarmy River". I particularly like Roscoe Karns in "It Happened One Night" as Mr. Shapely and think he is rather smarmy. Having checked the definition I find that the word is not always about being sexually annoying, but could just refer to anyone and even Uriah Heep with this meaning below. Name your favorite smarmy movie person, male or female!: smarm·y ˈsmärmē/ adjectiveinformal ingratiating and wheedling in a way that is perceived as insincere or excessive. "a smarmy, unctuous reply" synonyms: unctuous, ingratiating, slick, oily, greasy, obsequious, sycophantic, fawning; informalslimy, sucky "his smarmy confessions make me sick"
  6. Yeah, he had aged from a callow youth to a rather smarmy on the make rich guy, Down. Happens to a lot of guys. I still dig him. He was always such a smart-aleck.
  7. That abomination of cuteness makes me really miss Porky, Buckwheat, Spanky and Alfalfa. Otay!
  8. Thanks for sharing your research, Lorna!
  9. C or K, I would so much rather see a remake of "Little Men". They could combine it was a remake of "HMS Pinafore" and "Little Men" and have small males as pirates who sing constantly.
  10. He was great as Sam, Dargo but I guess that was so much earlier I wanted to pick a much later role for him. Frank was also the Mayor in "Bye Bye, Birdie" too. Just think, if Sam had not wired that he would advance 25,000 smackeroos to George Bailey to save the Building and Loan, Georgie might have ended up in the slammer with Violet. But that's a whole other movie!
  11. Unless they can find a kid with big, white staring vacant eyes and with a dog to match, it will never be good.
  12. Of course it had to be unkempt, Arturo since those Italian bombshells were much earthier and wanted to look like they had just gotten out of bed. I like the old movie stars in a poodle cut, but my favorite hairdo would have been a beehive or French twist. Really short stuff like pixie or gamine cuts, are kind of boring!
  13. She's great in "The Lady and the Montster"! I'm used to calling her Vera Hruba Ralston, TB but I'm not sure why she was billed different ways sometimes eliminating the Hruba. Do you know why as I'm too lazy to go check?
  14. It was awful. I caught a bit of it on tv and watched just to see how bad it could be. Meg Ryan did her typical cutesy bit. Yccck!
  15. I will only watch "AA" for one reason: Frank Albertson! Having read the book in high school, I hated the film when I first saw it, but I will watch bits of it to see Frank since I love him in anything. He had a long career and later is probably most famous for being the guy who flirts with Janet Leigh in "Psycho" and also is the bearer of all the money that she steals. Love him! Hate Kate!
  16. I've seen "The Babe Ruth Story" and am trying to remember if the Bambino pointed into the stands to hit the home run for the sick kid? "Words and Music" had nothing about Hart's drinking problem! "Night and Day" of course has Cole being in love with a woman when we all know he was in love with Monty Wooley instead. "Valentino" is pretty funny in both versions though I will say Dexter did look like him. "Song of Love" I have tried to forget since Hepburn was giving me heartburn while watching. "Cleopatra" is the only one I kind of like. I know it's ridiculous but gotta love all those outfits and jewelry that Liz is sporting plus the great eye make-up. Thanks for a wonderful list!
  17. Right on, FL with the first two and again let's blame June for the third entry. She has received multiple film convictions and should be on the Most Wanted List as Criminal Actress #1 for sure!
  18. Wow, what a rap sheet! As long as one's arm and with multiple felony counts. Of that list, I really can attest to the egregious horror of "The Wicker Man" as opposed to the original which is such a super duper film. All of the participants who helped make the films in your list, should be drawn and quartered, Lawrence.
  19. Oh, gosh I've seen it and regretted seeing it. Though I love Jack Lemmon, I kind of can't stand Allyson and she is a poor substitute for Claudette. Also there is a lot of singing, which seems out of place. Doesn't Stubby Kaye sing during the bus scene? Yes, very excellent choice for a film felony, James!
  20. As we all know, women being the free spirits they are who cannot be bound by convention, have since time immemorial worn pretty much whatever they wanted in terms of clothing. I'm sure even cave women, of whom I am the progeny, would not have allowed a tiger skin to become a uniform for eons, if they wanted to wear a leopard sarong or hot pants instead. Poor men, being the easily led folks they are, allow themselves to be restricted in what they wear, and walk around in suits and with little ties on their white shirts without hardly ever complaining or picketing this abomination. But I digress, since my post is really about women in the movies, who never outgrew their tomboy tendencies and always dress in this style. Now some women like Nancy Culp tend to always look tomboyish even in a dress, but I'm wondering who else do you think in films often affected a tomwoman look in her dress and manner. Now as we also all know, a girl who is a tomboy is not necessarily like a boy in all ways, and can later turn out to be the belle of the ball. All it means is that women, being unable to be tamed wear what they like and can use items that would be thought of as for men as well as women, in their daily lives whereas men are bound by ancient conventions and can't. Name some film tomwomen please!
  21. The producers of "Last House on the Left" have taken over your computer, Sepia. Be glad they don't write at the bottom of your posts "Keep repeating, this is only a message board, this is only a message board." When the horizontal and the vertical go too, you need to log off and go turn on your transistor radio and look for Wolfman Jack's transmission offshore.
  22. One of my favorite movies, is Lars von Trier's "Riget" [aka "The Kingdom"] which originally was made as a Danis television project. It is so accomplished and stands alone in quality. Of course, as usual American copycats thought they could remake it, and came up with the monstrosity known as "Kingdom Hospital" which if you have ever seen it, is really a nightmare and has none of the style and panache of the Lars von Trier masterpiece. For this egregious breach of common sense, I would issue an arrest warrant for Stephen King and any of his underlings. What remake makes you want to perform a citizen's arrest on the culprits who staged any copycat atrocity?
  23. Gosh, Sepia I saw none of this while watching reruns of "The Donna Reed Show". Mostly it was just about Jeff and Mary's school problems and what Mary would tell Alex if she overspent on decorating. Who knew!
  24. Emily, I'm not a rabbi but I know a few, and I feel that would totally say it was "kosher" for you to give a heads up for "Brief Encounter". I need say nothing more than you have mentioned in your plaudits about this film. Bravo, for reminding me and others when it is showing!
