Now who do you think is going to admit that publically, Down?
-
Maybe I'm daft or just floating on a raft, but I figured the "Huckleberry friend" reference was due to the song beginning about "two drifters out to see the world" which could be similar to Tom's and Huck's adventures together in the Twain classic. So after stating that, then saying someone is one's "Huckleberry friend" perhaps means something like one is the leader like Tom and one the follower like Huck and never the Twain shall meet. Just kidding, but I had to use the twain reference somewhere, now didn't I? Sorry that there are no painting fences references or anything about a girl named Becky Sharp or caves either.

I enjoy his most acerbic comments too, Dargo!

Are you saying the website is imbibing or the patrons of it, Nip? I know that I have been drinking a lot less than usual for a weekday personally. How many **** of the vanilla have you had while posting? **** = n-i-p-s

Just how much do you like Ben, Dargo?

Ah, shucks, CF! I try to be insidiously obnoxious and you out me. Have you considered that it was my evil twin who was the one giving our Sister from the Noir Carmelites a hard time? By the way, who needs Sister Rose when I can answer the question. Having had many years of Catholic training, I would state emphatically that one reason the film would be condemned, probably has to do with the fact that Lynn-Holly who played the skater Alexis, was not named after a saint. That's a big no-no, and even though Alexis could be taken from Saint Alexander, there is no female saint named Lynn or Holly. Also when Alexis went blind in the film, there may have been some in the LOD who wondered if a certain outside activity that she was participating in, caused some of the blindness. You would have to ask some of the men here if that contributes to serious head injury after effects. Plus, the film was made before the ISU started banning obscene moves on the ice that showed some of the naughty bits. All of the above would constitute an occasion of sin for some watching and that would be enough to put the film in the Condemned category.

Death Takes No Holiday -- The Obituary Thread

Hey, Dargo Coburn, I retired early too at age 35 from being a gandy dancer. What was your line of avarice...oops, I mean avocation or as they might say, work? -
I loved the movie "Memento" also! And Guy Pearce is so cute. He was good in the time machine film too. I figured out "Memento" before the end by reading his body tattoos.
-
Thanks, SCSU as that makes sense too. He was trained in a more visual medium style, which may have led to not being as accepted. Although in the movie I watched yesterday his performance was quite restrained.
-
Thanks for the insider insights' Arturo! I think he was quite handsome and comely and it is a shame he did not go on to more pictures.

Okay, we've all heard the legend, that customers at a movie started laughing the first time they heard Gilbert's voice onscreen, saying something like "I love you, I love you!!" or whatever. So every time I get a chance to watch one of his pictures, I do so hoping to understand. I watched "The Phantom of Paris" yesterday from 1931, and for the life of me I can hear nothing high or squeaky about his voice. Sure, he does not sound like Sam Elliott but he doesn't sound too different from the tone of a David Niven or even a Ronald Colman. I don't get it. What do you think is really the truth about this legend? Any insights from film scholars here would be appreciated. I mean, maybe someone just wanted to take him down since he was a big star. If one wants to make fun of a star, they could just as easily say that John Wayne walks like a girl, and sideways to boot. That take-off of him in the original "Les Cages aux Folles" was dead on. Any other Hollywood legends that you would like to disagree with, please write them down in this thread for debating purposes.

HITS & MISSES: Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow on TCM

It would be nice to see a remake of the Cole Porter story which shows that he and Linda were probably just friends and that Cole had a more intense relationship with guys like Montey Wooley mayhaps. Gives new meaning to the phrase "I've got you under my skin". -
Is it a Philco and do you get the Dumont Network on it, Down? If so I'm coming over tonight. Have some snacks ready!

Thank you, dear Sepia for a great story! And thank you for inadvertently making my point about finding humor in scenes others might not, because while that host of MST is talking about what he finds funny, he is talking over the parts he doesn't get that I find funny and ruining it for me! Again, thanks for sharing such a funny tale.

I love "The Brainiac". Hopefully your tongue is not long and green and slimey like that of good old Baron Vitelius, Lorna?

Okay, answer yes or no to the following, Down: You refuse to watch the colorized version of "It's a Wonderful Life". If the answer is yes, you are a true movie buff. If no, get out of my sight!

Wow, now you are the type of movie fan that I like to be friends with, Fedya. You would not make fun of me for noticing that the lamp in the film "Dark Passage" with Bogie and Bacall is from the Moss catalog, stock # 2401 and came out in 1946 and is made of plexiglass. The floor one, with the black plastic running up and down the main stem, like a ribbon. Finally, I am not alone in my quest for movie trivia!

I was sure you'd have at least 23 points and be on your way to Movie Hades, FL. Thanks for participating!

That's fun, isn't it? I mean to pick up used dvd's from garage sales and other places like flea markets. Of course, being a perfectionist about my films I always worry that the dvd will be messed up, in fact I stopped taking out dvd's from the library because they would always seem to stick or ruin my player. At least some second hand retailers who sell dvd's will let you return them if they are defective. Thanks, Lawrence!

I did. In fact just to make you feel even worse, I've been receiving these free catalogues for a few months now. I also know someone who works at the local Coca-Cola bottling plant and I get free 2-Liters occasionally. Eat your little pea picking heart out! I apologize, that was rude. I do so hope you start receiving your catalogues soon. My guess is that they went out first to people who subscribe to the monthly schedule magazine maybe.
-
So sorry, Skimpole, but it would simply not be de rigueur behaviour to follow your admonition here to jump the gun on the August schedule and so on. I must resist following your command, and I suggest you cease and desist also, you movie insurrectionist you!

Love your yearly exegesis, TB and this one made me think how wonderful it would have been for Antonioni to direct a Doris Day and Rock Hudson film. Why, it would have broken the mold and maybe have even been in black and white. I can see it now. pregnant silences between Doris and Rock, Tony Randall goes missing in the middle of the movie, and someone named Gelsomina steals Rock away from Doris who later meets up with the Fool and marries him. Okay, so I've combined Antonioni and Fellini but still would make a good film.
