It's interesting. But nothing is as interesting as the true life of Eddie Gein. I mean, who uses skulls to eat soup from or makes masks of woman's faces and wears them at night while singing and dancing under the moonlight?

A lot of movie fans that I know, are also collectors of movie memorabilia. I'm curious what if anything posters here might collect. I've always bought stills and have a few movie posters that are original, but my main area of interest is collecting Joseff of Hollywood jewelry. What's great about it is, that it's a collectible that one can wear, which is not true of most things related to films. Now for sure, I do not have any pieces that were actually in a movie, since they would cost a mint, but it is fun to collect pieces that Joseff of Hollywood started making available to the public in the late 1930's at stores like Nieman Marcus, Saks and other high end shops. For those not familiar with his work, Joseff, named Eugene Joseff when born in the early 1900's in Chicago started out there in advertising and also learning techniques in forging bronze. Upon moving to Hollywood, he was friends with costume designer, Walter Plunkett and from this link began making jewelry for films using the same forging techniques, combined with much background research on making pieces for films that were historically accurate. If you look up his resume, you will find that his jewelry and other metal work was utilized in numerous films like "Shanghai Gesture", to "Gone With the Wind" to "Cleopatra" with Liz Taylor. Joseff had developed an antiquing process that he would plate the cast designs with which did not reflect light as most movie jewelry had and gave things a subdued, and Renaissance look. He also was credited with realizing he could earn more by renting his jewelry to film companies and then they would be returned for additional uses by other studios. In later years, his company would still make items for tv shows like "Dallas" and "Dynasty" supposedly. If interested, they still have a website or one can find Joseff of Hollywood pieces, admittedly more likely ones that were sold to the public, on Ebay. I am currently looking at a very outre brooch of a headhunter there which is going for only the measly sum of $674.99. Yes, it can be expensive to buy Joseff of Hollywood, but you will feel like a star if you do! What do you collect, if you don't mind me being nosy?

Eddie Gein's real brother was a full brother, and makes a better plot. What is the fun of killing off a half-brother?

Great recall, Kingrat as Miss Wonderly noted! I dig all Samuel Fuller films and that one is my favorite. The idea of having oneself committed to an institution willingly, is always a bad idea. I always think "What if the person who is supposed to remind them that you are really sane, croaks?" Then you are stuck for life with the macrame daily lessons and bad food probably. Being in a strait jacket has never appealed to me.

I love this show but will admit I have missed episodes. I always forget when it is on. Have they ever mentioned a brother for Norman, since the real prototype for the story even though Robert Bloch denies it, had that brother named Henry, who also seemed to die mysteriously. I think it would be a great additional plotline for the Bates tale.

From what I see, a lot of Americans need to work on English as a first language. And I'm not even talking about recent immigrants. -
RICH'S TOR JOHNSON (AND OTHER Z-MOVIE STARS) THREAD

I'm currently reading a book on the murder of the heir to the Fontainebleau hotel in Miami, Ben Novack and they mention Swifty Morgan a lot, who was Damon Runyon's inspiration for the Lemon Drop Kid. Apparently he used to hang out at the Fontainebleau with the likes of Meyer Lansky and the rest of the mob. I don't think Bob Hope did him justice! -
Sarah Siddons was a real actress though, back in the days of theatrical entrepreneur, David Garrick, Down.

Yikes, you read my mind, Down. Now we are one brain, separated by two bodies apparently. You did know the Colonel's real name, right? Andreas Cornelis van Kuijk. No wonder he never wanted Elvis to tour Holland. -

I'd be chicken to go out with him. That white suit reminds me of the one in the Alec Guinness film. I cry fowl! -
I agree, Holden. Good synopsis of the book. I think the movie made of one of his books that was the closest to his original conception, was of course "In Cold Blood". Of course, the relationship between him and Perry Smith was not made explicit, and some parts of the Dick Hickok part were a bit convoluted, but in essence that film did not betray Capote's take. This whole conversation about countermanding the original source material, reminds me of the film "Crossfire" which of course was not about anti-Semitism but rather homosexuality in its incarnation as "The Brick Foxhole" by Richard Brooks. I don't know why Hollywood always messes with these things. Well, I do know, since it was the production code and the movie was still good, but one wonders how much better it would have been following the real story as written.

Princess, no one has ever accused me of having "good taste" before so thanks! I do love your line-up of stars and BOTM though. Bela and Karloff can do no wrong by me! Lon is okay too, until he aged rapidly ending with his appearance in "Spider Baby". -

Though I agree, SF I would always rather be a pedant than a petard and be hoisted on it. Bombs away! -
Oh, right. "Well, I can't call him butler can I? Someone's name might be Butler." Hilarious.

Thanks, HR for another great photo of Dick!

I love that lady so much! Boy, wouldn't one be lucky to have her as their granny. I'll watch any movie she is in, thanks! -

A 24/7 all day, all Tor Johnson channel would be super! -
I love love love Silent Sunday Nights and its fare. I will go way out on a limb, a dangerous limb and say that anyone who does not appreciate at least some silents, is no real film fan. So there, plebeians, have at me!

Slayton, don't you mean "everyone" who counts! Haha, will wait for those offended by this remark to sign in and assail me.

Ah, that's too bad. I saw a promo with him recently on Me-Tv and it was great to see him again. He always seemed like such a decent guy on film.

Your name wouldn't happen to be Christina, would it? Actually I have no problem with your rant, since I'm sure not everyone likes Joan, Bette or Judy. And that's fine. I would only like to ask what women stars or non-stars do you think TCM should replace the above ladies with? Sorry for ending my sentence with a preposition! And what "good" silent films are your favorites, HJC? -
I started watching AAE and even though I've seen it numerous times, and own the dvd I could not stop. Probably the greatest amount of repartee in films! The bit where Bette spars with Gary and Hugh after the "understudy" reading with Marilyn Monroe still holds up today as the most sarcastic interplay in film for my money. Loved seeing Bess Flowers congratulate Eve at the Sarah Siddons award, as usual.

RICH'S MADE-UP TCM GENERAL DISCUSSION POLLS

I like to stay in General Discussions since I've always wanted to meet a military man with a high ranking. Alas, so far no go. I did meet General Electric on a Film Noir board, but he was a dim bulb. -
Kim Stanley is incomparable as an actress! I think in Chayesky's "The Goddess" she gives an amazing performance, and it was good to see someone like Lloyd Bridges get an A-part opposite her, since he proved how good he was in the role also. I really enjoyed her also as the mother of Frances Farmer, later in her career. Thanks, TB!
