DJ..sorry about the delay, I didn't know you had asked me a question...If you're familiar with the book, you know it's primarily transcriptions of conversations the two had about Hitchcock's work, film by film. To be honest, it's been about ten years since I've read any part of it and not sure your question is answered in it. Truffaut was obviously a fan of Hitchcock and defended him to critics who dismissed him because of his commercial success. I do think it's interesting in the introduction he refers to Hitchcock as needing to protect himself from everyone else..so he became the director actors wouldn't question and the one who knew more about technique than the technicians.

Another 'never seen', Let Us Live (39)..it's very much 'the wrong man' x 2, and again, Henry Fonda is one of two wrongly convicted of murder based on witness id. Maureen O'Sullivan is the standout of a solid cast as Fonda's girlfriend, who spends her nights waiting tables and days trying to prove his innocence along with ousted cop Ralph Bellamy, and she gives a great verbal lashing at the end to the authorities who stood in her way... a pretty good 'undiscovered' crime drama.

The Candleford series sounds interesting..I like costume period pieces if the story doesn't get sluggish. Two I really enjoyed were The Grand (very dishy hotel setting) and The Paradise--the intertwining lives of workers at a pioneering dept store with an emphasis on the 'place'of women at the time. Both were on netflix.
I just finished The Perfect Snob, 40s rom/com with a good cast (Lynn Bari, Charlotte Greenwood, Charles Ruggles, Cornell Wilde +) who are sort of wasted in the predictable plot..gets a shrug..
