Just offhand, I would guess the curbside entry/exit would allow better camera access...the shot would show the actor to best advantage. I've wondered about the huge doors, but I think the sets were built to show 'opulence'...rich people=big houses=big doors (and staircases), and on a small set, there were few ways to show that. Just my guesses.
