Sorry but the same photo is shown in an article from 2018: https://ontvtoday.com/alicia-malone-uses-her-film-knowledge-as-new-tcm-host (2nd photo down the page.) It is a very nice photo, though.

Siskel & Ebert's original review of Bonfire starts at the 11 minute mark: Roger has some interesting comments about Bruce Willis. 🙂

Please fix the TCM Trailer aspect ratio for older films!

Maybe there's hope. Slightly cropped along the top but at least it's not stretched: -

Just to illustrate, here's an example of an older promo for Kings Row without stretching: And a more recent promo for Anchors Aweigh: Not sure I can understand why this was chosen when the other approach is perfectly fine. -
I have listed suggestions for many of the daily themes for September in the At-A-Glance schedule that was posted yesterday. Please refer to: http://escapepress.com/tcmsched/tcm_overview.html At this time there are still many gaps in the schedule (marked 'TBA' in the document). I will fill these in as information is provided.

This is very impressive, thanks for posting. I hope you don't mind me asking some questions: - Is there an organization to the rows/stacks? Alphabetical, by theme? Not sure how you find things. - Is it climate controlled? - Are there any nitrate prints in there? Forgive my ignorance of the current state of keeping real films. Looks like an amazing collection.

It was the 'Final Cut' version, no voiceover narration. https://www.movie-censorship.com/report.php?ID=4589 Here is a description from the 4K blu-ray release which used the Final Cut version: https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Blade-Runner-4K-Blu-ray/181637/#Review If you happen to have HBOMax, it is also being shown there.

In addition to gaps, there are also some ‘extra’ entries. Sometimes previous entries have not been removed when modifications or replacements were added. This results in multiple films listed with the same start time, or movie start times within 20 minutes of each other, for example. (Such issues are not the fault of the way MovieCollectorOH is generating the schedule. They are actually part of the current TCM schedule data.)
-
Here are the TCM premieres for August, as determined by MovieCollectorOH’s TCM schedules database. Notes: - The dates shown are based on a programming day starting at 6 am ET and running past midnight. Aug 4 - Satchmo: The Life of Louis Armstrong (1989) (doc.) (2 showings) Aug 13 - Stanley and Iris (1990) Aug 14 - The Omen (1976) Aug 18 - The Last Castle (2001) Aug 19 - Here's to the Young Lady (1949) Aug 19 - Repast (1951) Aug 22 - The Black Rose (1950) Aug 26 - Fluffy (1965) Aug 28 - Gorky Park (1983) Aug 29 - Arch of Triumph (1948) Thanks as always to MCOH!

TCM is distorting the appearance of films
cmovieviewer replied to cmovieviewer's topic in General Discussions
TCM streaming pretty much matches what is shown on the HD channel. With a streaming box and TV it looks almost identical, although to my eyes the effective frame rate may not be exactly the same (possibly smaller). It is slightly different in a web browser - if you make the browser page wider to increase the size of the window, the vertical dimension of the movie frame is limited to around 632 pixels. For widescreen movies, the actual size of the movie shown may be less than that as the letterbox dimensions apply within the frame. Along with this size limit in the web browser, I don't think the picture quality of WatchTCM in a browser is as good as it is on a streaming device. (There may be some additional scaling going on for the web browser to fit things in the window like this.) -

There does seem to be some loss in picture quality when this stretching happens, especially for the web version of WatchTCM. The picture may look a bit better when using a streaming box connected to a TV (although the vertical stretching problem is still there.) Pure speculation on my part, but I wonder if these issues might be caused by some process TCM has to prepare video for both high-definition cable as well as streaming distribution, since both delivery types have the same problem. The other evidence is that newer widescreen movies do not have the issue, where presumably higher definition video sources are being used. (I should also make clear that currently all 4:3 films shown on TCM do not have the problem. I watched portions of Now, Voyager and Casablanca yesterday and they looked OK. This may also tie into the fact that these would have some of the best video sources.) -
TCM is distorting the appearance of films

The TCM example I show is captured from WatchTCM in a web browser on my computer. No cable provider or even a TV set involved. I wanted to make sure that it was not an artifact from my cable company. -
Recently it has become apparent that TCM is broadcasting a distorted image for some of the films they show. This is limited to some of the older 4:3 or ‘fullscreen’ classic films (not 16:9 or other ‘widescreen’ films). For some reason, in these 4:3 films TCM is in effect cropping the bottom portion of the film and stretching the film downwards to fill up the 4:3 frame. An easy example to look at is the beginning of a classic MGM film. Here is Leo the Lion at the beginning of Come Live with Me (1941) as shown today on TCM: And here is Leo on the DVD of the same film: Notice that in the TCM image the bottom of the MGM shield is cut off below the “Metro Goldwyn Mayer” text. Also notice that the seal around Leo is stretched vertically and is no longer as round as it appears on the DVD. I was watching this morning and the same distortion was shown for three 4:3 films in a row - Man of the People (1937), His Family Tree (1935), and Come Live with Me (1941), which for me represents a disturbing trend. I find this annoying, especially as actor’s faces appear vertically stretched and thin. This distortion is shown on both the cable broadcast and WatchTCM versions, so it seems to be baked into the TCM video source. I had also noticed distortion during the Saturday evening presentation of Cause for Alarm! (1951) on Noir Alley. Interestingly, Eddie Muller showed clips from the film that were not distorted, so TCM seems to be doing something bad in preparing the film for broadcast. Since TCM has until now comported themselves as trying to show films as they were intended by the original producers, I can’t believe that this defect in presentation should be considered acceptable.

Gone With the Wind was last shown on TCM on Monday, July 12 as part of a tribute to composer Max Steiner, and the evening was hosted by Dave Karger, not Alicia Malone. The previous showing of GWTW was on Thursday, March 4 as part of the ‘Reframed’ series, where TCM had multiple hosts discussing what are now considered to be problematic themes in classic films. However, I don’t think homosexuality was discussed as a theme of Gone With the Wind. There was a film shown later that evening where homosexuality was discussed, that being Hitchcock’s Rope (1948). So if I had to guess, I suspect the original poster is confusing the discussion of the two films. The possibility of homosexual undertones in Rope is a topic that has been discussed by other film reviewers long before TCM presented it, so this was not a case of Alicia Malone coming up with something out of the blue.

One week from the original air date is pretty typical for movies that are posted to WatchTCM. Unfortunately, not all films are included, as determined by the arrangement TCM has with the rights holder. By the same token, films that are controlled by Warner are sometimes allowed to stay for longer periods for streaming on the app. Here are the neo-noir titles shown prior to this week and their status: Harper (1966) - available through Aug 1 Point Blank (1967) - not available Warning Shot (1967) - not available Get Carter (1971) - available through Aug 8 The Friends of Eddie Coyle (1973) - not available Chinatown (1974) - not available Pulp (1972) - not available Body Heat (1981) - available through Jul 24 (this is the last day!) To Live and Die in L.A. (1985) - not available Sorry to say at this point there are only a few titles available for streaming from the previously shown films.

Good point, that would make sense. I notice on the foxnews link there are 2 photos, the 2nd showing the tag with Judy Garland's name on it. In this photo the dress pattern looks much more blue than it does in the 1st picture, so there may be something off in the first photo. Or maybe the inside of the dress where the tag is looks different from the outside. Also, would they need to make the blouse so yellow for the sepia scenes? Perhaps it has discolored over time. I wish someone in the know could explain it...

Unfortunately the theme is not about astrology and / or fortune tellers in the movies. That would be a more typical theme. Rather, it is organizing the films around common astrology signs for the stars appearing in the movies based on their birthdays.

Not only that, it's 4 consecutive Tuesdays. I feel sorry for Alicia Malone having to be the host.

Season 2 episode 1 is out now. Less Ben this time around with Julie Salamon doing almost all of the narration. Not sure I will enjoy the story of The Bonfire of the Vanities production disaster as much as season 1, but I'll keep listening. Any comments?

Unfortunately Harper was replaced with Undercurrent for viewers in Canada. That's weird that they would show the Eddie-Ben introduction for Harper anyway. I guess they wanted to give some background on the Friday Neo Noir theme regardless. I'm sure that must be very frustrating / disappointing.

The version of Never Too Late (1965) on WatchTCM has the 2 'missing' scenes at around 51:00 and 55:20. The run time of the film there is 1:44:23, which is pretty close to the 105 minute run time listed on IMDB and Wikipedia. Of course, something might have happened during the live broadcast to change the presentation. Back in February I was watching Out of Bounds (1986) early in the morning on TCM when scenes were skipped at the end and there was a black screen for 10 minutes. WatchTCM is showing Never Too Late through July 30.
