OMG, Vautrin! Being a fan of good old, D.H., I remember the first time I watched that film, I was almost embarrassed for that cutie Alan Bates during the [as you put it..."wrassling" scene] since it was incredibly revealing. Now I would expect Oliver Reed to relish such interplay but up to then Bates had been a bit more circumspect in films. Even the "firelight" was not disguising anything but just putting a warm, golden glow on all the proceedings. It made Glenda's scenes appear to be quite tame. I get a kick out of Lawrence's writing, since he has that same skill as Nabokov at getting sexual innuendoes into scenes which on the surface appear to only be talking about the usage of sporrans on one's kilt. Good show!

I haven't seen it in a number of years, so I can't recall all the details of what was

bared and to what degree. It was certainly something that couldn't have been

done five years before in a mainstream movie. In general I prefer Vlad to D.H.,

especially stylistically, though sometimes one can grow a bit tired of Nabokov's

almost too perfect manner. But both are worthwhile writers.

  2. I check YT every once in a while to see if a newly uploaded Warhol or Fassbinder

flick turns up. They sometimes do. Not the best way to watch a movie, but better

than nothing. Donnie Brasco is good, though I tend to mix up these Mafia movies

with each other. I have the actual That Obscure Object of Desire on tape somewhere.

Maybe it was on TCM many years ago, can't remember.

  3. Speaking of nude rasslin', there is the Alan Bates Oliver Reed nudie non-cage

match in Women in Love. The boys clear out the furniture to the sides and

go at it in the all together. By the firelight we can see both men's glimmering

cheeks and every once in a while, a fleeting glimpse of their limp and bouncing

dinguses, as Sam Spade might have put it. For the non-wrestling fans there

are some nice shots of MP to be Glenda Jackson's berries. A flick truly with

    something for everyone.

After Burr's nude scene they considered changing the name of the show to

Ironfront, but then decided not to.

Or he could be Tiny Tim's doppelganger, Vautrin and got lost in a space continuum while singing "Tiptoe through the Tulpas" and he ended up in that Twin Peaks diner, dating Peggy Lipton because he had a crush on her doppelganger who was in the Mod Squad.

How about Tiny Tim having a man crush on Clarence Williams III? As for the first

scenario, it's okay, though I find it hard to picture Tiny Tim wearing a cowboy hat.

Yes there is....Harry doesn't ATTACK innocent bystanders....he wants to nail the crooks through his own methods, however unconstitutional they may be.

Harry may not agree with the system, but he does want to protect the good people of San Francisco (though no argument his ways of doing it can be outright reckless at times).

That was mostly a facetious comment. I do recall that Pauline Kael got all

bent out of shape about the movie. And I would think that most people

would not approve of cops using unconstitutional methods in their work.

Harry is lucky he is not around these days when everyone has a cellphone.

LOL. I remember it being ok. As in not bad. Probably would watch it again (as I forgot the plot!)

I think I saw it two or three years back and I've forgotten a lot of the

plot details too. I remember that posed photo of Georgie dressed up

by a desk with a big shelf full of books in the background.

Oh, that's right! I forgot about that. And Diana Dors was in it! (How could I forget HER??? LOL).

I'll bet George couldn't forget her either. Now if he had been younger...

Not a bad picture, but nothing very special. I found the British bookstore

setting to be interesting, more so than if it had taken place in an Amazon

    dsitibution center.

  8. Brenty boy starred in the early 1950s British flick The Last Page, playing a

bookstore manager who, innocently, got messed up with all kinds of criminal

activities. And to top things off, the U.S. title was Man Bait. Now that has to

    a noir.

If that's true - and, it is true - then the boy with green hair will have a terrible time in getting "his message" across.

Well, then, maybe he won't, and just remain "bald".

But, then, the film becomes pointless, right?

Whatever you may think about the film - a boy's "fantasy" or a "true story" - it does have a very strong anti-war message.

I really don't get Ben Mankiewicz's contention that a film like this could have led to Joseph Losey's troubles with HUAC.

I haven't seen the movie in a while, so I don't recall all the details. But besides the

there's nothing wrong with being different theme, there is a strong anti-war message

of course. To HUAC that might have been enough. Anti-war, sounds kind of commie

    to me. :)

  10. My own tulpa tells me that Tulsa Time is not really set in Tulsa. It's about

a guy who left Tulsa and headed west and now wishes he was back in

Tulsa. If he was in Tulsa he wouldn't need to set his watch to Tulsa time.

    Yes, the tulpa knows.

That's why the films play down the specifics of Nick's previous employment, other than his knowledge and his vast array of contacts with members of the police & with the generally more likeable rogues of the naughty-doing-fraternity.

I was being somewhat facetious as the Pinkertons were well known as

strike breakers. I will say that the Thin Men movies are intricately plotted.

I've seen most of them over the years and it would be a lot easier if one

watched the last ten minutes first so one could understand the plots, that

is if one had already seen it once before.

    Oh, I think they would.

And because I think Her Majesty became a little more "mellow" herself after Diana's untimely death.

(...well, at least according to that flick I saw about her starring that still sexy at 72 Mirren dame...err, Dame)

Mellow is not a word I associate with QE II, but after a few sherries, who knows.

I saw one of Helen's early flicks a few months ago with a lot of that "gratuitous"

nudidity in it. Mirren is built like a brick loo.
