EW magazine votes for "Dunkirk" as best of 2017
drednm replied to spence's topic in General Discussions
Dunkirk wasn't exactly boring, but it wasn't exciting or emotionally involving either. All the young soldier actors looked alike so I couldn't keep the story straight. Funny how after all that turmoil and angst, all the young soldier actors looked like they had just shaved that very morning! Bottom line: overrated, but not as overrated as Mudbound. -
It would smell just as bad as the version with a boy.

They smell.

Watched Hey Boy! Hey Girl! last night. Not much of a film (it's OK), but Keely Smith is terrific. Her renditions of "Autumn Leaves" and "You Are My Love" are classic. In an era of great female vocalists like Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, Lena Horne, Rosemary Clooney, Sarah Vaughan, Jo Stafford, Patti Page, Keely Smith held her own.

Never seen it. It looks like drek.

You seem to have a big problem. Take it elsewhere. No one here is interested.

Top 5 films for each year of the 1920s according to imdb

IMDb is invaluable. I make corrections to the database and it almost always works. Attempted corrections to the TCM and even the AFI database never happen. I almost never use them. -

Top 5 films for each year of the 1920s according to imdb
drednm replied to LsDoorMat's topic in General Discussions
The ratings on IMDb hardly ever make sense to me. They have so many algorithms (if that's the right word) that how they arrive at these number is a total mystery. I remember giving a 10 to a silent short film that had only 5 or 6 votes and its rating number went DOWN. -
The River (1951) is one I taped off TCM decades ago. Beautiful Technicolor film about a girl's remembrance of growing up in India in the 1920s, a coming of age tale about life (as it used to be) and death and the river they live on. We see a picture (no politics) about people living together and respecting each other's belief systems even as they struggle with their own beliefs and problems. Every ending is a new beginning. The actor playing Captain John, Thomas Breen, was the son the Joseph Breen, Hollywood's censorship czar from 1934 -1941. The film was based on a book by Rumer Godden.

Certainly not conclusive in any way but very interesting. I didn't know you could even search that way on IMDb.
