  1. If it's orchestral, it must be Carl Davis or Robert Israel. For piano/organ it must be Gaylord Carter, Ben Model, Donald Sosin, David Drazin, Philip Carli. As the punishment should fit the crime, so should the music fit the film.
  2. When I was a kid in the 1950s, there were several TV ladies among my favorites. Lucille, Ball, Vivian Vance, Imogene Coca, Martha Raye, Gale Storm, and Anne Jeffreys on Topper. She had a way with breezy sarcasm that appealed to me.
  3. TCM is listing With Byrd at the South Pole (1930) as a William Haines film. The Haines in the film is a real-life meteorologist named William C. Haines.
  4. Davies has had two Summer Stars tributes. Along with all the talkies (other than It's a Wise Child), they have licenses for The Red Mill, The Patsy, Show People, The Bride's Play, Enchantment, and When Knighthood Was in Flower. Not sure about Quality Street. There's also the recently restored version of Beauty's Worth available. That's more than 20 films.
  5. Amazing! Thank you! It finally worked when I chose "Direct Link for Layouts"
  6. Tried a couple. All I get is the message: The server could not be contacted
  7. Nothing at all..... I've tried uploading from computer and using the URL link from postimages.com
  8. My photo disappeared and of course nothing works to upload a photo. I've tried a variety of sizes, browsers, and even different computers. This has been and still is one of the clunkiest, NON-user-friendly sites. Perhaps the nightly barrage of spam from Asia broke something?
  9. In November 2014, TCM did a "Salute to Silent Stars," which I thought was a great idea, giving exposure to many stars who would not otherwise be SOTM, mainly because not enough films exist or are licensable. It featured people like Marion Davies, Gloria Swanson, Douglas Fairbanks, Norma Talmadge, John Gilbert, etc. I'm still waiting for a full-out SOTM salute to Marion Davies and William Haines.
  10. On sale now at https://www.amazon.com/Silent-Films-Marion-Davies/dp/1547247959/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1505906427&sr=8-1&keywords=lorusso+davies
  11. A real ho-hum..... I've never seen any of the shows that won. I don't know anyone who watches TV.
  12. I know it's been also 3 years for the second airing of Enchantment. Maybe Knighthood is big enough for them to show again soon. This was the second showing of The Bride's Play this year.
  13. Sure they will but don't hold your breath!
  14. The original process was called Handschiegl. It involved a frame by frame coloring on the film. For this restoration, Jack Theakston used digital hand coloring to replicate the original on-film process. This original process was used in addition to tinting/toning and early Technicolor (often called 2-strip). Ben Model reinstated the original tinting scheme for When Knighthood Was in Flower, which included the hand coloring during the chase sequence. This is one of the best film restorations I've ever seen. And for those of you you have seen the ancient Videobrary VHS version of this film that's been around for decades, you know exactly what I'm talking about.
  15. Davies gave millions to charity. She founded the Marion Davies Children's Clinic at UCLA in 1959. It's still there.
  16. Don't miss tonight at 8 PM Eastern.... Premiere of Marion Davies in When Knighthood Was in Flower, one of the biggest hits of the silent era. Gorgeous tinted printed from Library of Congress was restored by Ben Model (who also scored the film) and even included some scenes with digital hand coloring. Exciting story of Mary Tudor boasts mammoth sets by Joseph Urban. Cast includes Forrest Stanley, Lyn Harding (as Henry VIII) and William Powell as the oily villain.
  17. Starting this morning at 9 AM (East), three terrific silents: Enchantment, The Bride's Play, and The Red Mill. Then starting at 6:30 PM, three more silents: The Patsy, When Knighthood Was in Flower, and Show People. At 3:15 PM, one of Davies' best films: Peg o' My Heart.
  18. That was 100 years. Time to get over it. And I don't believe a word of it.
  19. Don't agree at all. Was the INTENT of GWTW or BOAN to impart racist propaganda or message? No. End of story.
  20. Any of the silents would be good choices.
  21. Racism is in the eyes of the beholder. If you want to find a film racist you will. If you can't separate art from life, then don't watch the film. Times change; history does not. Any film you watch (or any book you read) must be seen in its historical context and not judged by today's sensitivities. Watching Gone with the Wind or The Birth of a Nation does not condone racism or approve of the ****. It's a story. It's fiction. It ain't real.
  22. Just in time for Marion Davies day on August 29: Available at Amazon
  23. Marion Davies day is August 29 Here's a new book that just came out! Available at Amazon. [
