  1. YAY I got my old account back, but it took a personal intervention by this moderator. THANKS!
  2. August 29 will see six count them six MARION DAVIES silent films in an all-day tribute. Along with THE RED MILL, THE PATSY and SHOW PEOPLE will be my productions of ENCHANTMENT and THE BRIDE'S PLAY as well as Ben Model's newly restored WHEN KNIGHTHOOD WAS IN FLOWER, which will receive its TCM/TV premiere. The latter film was the #1 box office hit of 1922, a mega-hit that established MARION DAVIES as a major star and sealed the deal for her to join the newly organized MGM, where she would remain for a decade.
  3. MARION DAVIES is the only silent star honored this August!
  4. THE BRIDE'S PLAY premiered in April, but ENCHANTMENT hasn't been shown since November 2014. Ben's WHEN KNIGHTHOOD WAS IN FLOWER was a big hit at Toronto Silent Film Festival this spring. Great new print, re-timed, some hand-coloring, and Ben's score.
  5. BIG NEWS! Marion Davies is scheduled on August 29 for a TCM Summer Under the Stars salute which will premiere Ben Model's newly restored WHEN KNIGHTHOOD WAS IN FLOWER! Also in the lineup are repeats of my projects ENCHANTMENT and THE BRIDE'S PLAY as well as SHOW PEOPLE and THE RED MILL and several talkies.
  6. Anyone know what MARION DAVIES films are scheduled for the 29th?
  7. Old, old school Hollywood: GLORIA SWANSON MARION DAVIES GRETA GARBO DOLORES DEL RIO CORINNE GRIFFITH BETTY COMPSON DOLORES COSTELLO JOAN CRAWFORD MARY PICKFORD LILLIAN GISH
  8. You have a point there about "bloated old Presley" fitting the has-been role, but I think by that time he had become his own worst caricature and enemy. Plus there was room for only one diva in the film: Streisand.
  9. La Streisand directed three actresses to Oscar nominations: Amy Irving in Yentl, Kate Nelligan in The Prince of Tides, and Lauren Bacall in The Mirror Has Two Faces ... plus Nick Nolte for The Prince of Tides ... the three films she has directed so far.
  10. My least favorite Streisand film ... but bloated old Presley would have been ridiculous in this film ... plus he couldn't act to save his life.
  11. Luckily all of her movies are available on DVD and/or Blu-ray. I think What's Up, Doc? is a comic gem which also boasts terrific work by Ryan O'Neal, Madeline Kahn, Kenneth Mars, and Liam Dunn as the judge. I also think The Owl and the Pussycat with George Segal is very funny. And The Guilt Trip is better than the reviews would suggest. On the dramatic side, The Mirror Has Two Faces is quite good, and as with Yentl, she was robbed of an Oscar nomination for directing The Prince of Tides.
  12. Streisand is an incredible talent. I saw Funny Girl in a packed theater when it first came out and have never since been in a theater with an audience so totally mesmerized by a star as during that showing. There are a few of her movie I don't care for but the vast majority are terrific. She's shown such range as a musical star, a comedienne, a dramatic actress, singer, songwriter, director, producer, and whatever else that can be done in film-making (so it seems). Oh yes, and she's had a #1 album at least once in each of the last six decades. There will never be another like Barbra Streisand.
  13. Library of Congress has all Marion Davies' MGM silent films, including BEVERLY OF GRAUSTARK. They are owned by Warners and there fore under copyright. Warners apparently has no plans to release these films. By the way, it's a marvelous film with Davies playing Beverly, who disguises herself as her injured cousin PRINCE OSCAR in order to save the throne of Graustark. Especially funny is a drinking scene in which the prince (Davies) must down tankards of beer while drinking with his/her men.
  14. Three films starring MARION DAVIES will be released later this year by Undercrank Productions. All three will be on DVD and or Blu-Ray for the first time ever. Here's a press release about WHEN KNIGHTHOOD WAS IN FLOWER, THE BRIDE'S PLAY, and BEAUTY'S WORTH. http://www.undercrankproductions.com/news.html
  15. Streisand article on the home page misspells name of Elliott Gould and has weird inconsistency of various film titles in boldface and others set off by quote marks. I think this was written long ago and lacked a proofreader.
  16. Kino Lorber is coming out with three Gloria Swanson silent films directed by Allan Dwan this summer. Zaza, Stage Struck, and Manhandled will all get first-time dvd/blu releases.
  17. Cole Porter likely never read a comic book in his life. GASP! There was a time when adults were actually grown up and not just adult-sized children living in fantasy worlds far, far away.
  18. MARION DAVIES will have three, count them, three first-time DVD releases this summer! More information to come....
  19. from story on The Bride's Play on TCM: "His company produced all the 40-plus films that Davies ever appeared in." I count 46 feature films. Neither Runaway Romany nor The Hollywood Revue of 1929 were produced by Cosmopolitan.
  20. Screencap of Marion Davies from my copy of April Folly (1920). She's 23 years old and starring in her eighth film.
  21. Sounded like Ben Mankiewicz said Runaway Romance as Davies' first film. It should have been Runaway Romany.
