That tale of yours, Dargo, triggers a memory of my own of an unexpected encounter I had with an actor. Sorry that this anecdote is totally off topic since it has nothing to do with David Janssen.

The actor involved is a character actor named Derek McGrath, who has appeared on Cheers and a few million other TV shows and films, usually in small roles.

There are a couple of photos of him as both a young actor and an older one.

Anyway back in the '80s I was walking with a friend along an Ontario escarpment called Rattlesnake Point. It's a beautiful woodsy area which even has a herd of bison living in a corralled field below.

In any event as we were walking along I was extolling the beauty of the area, as I was saying out loud for all to hear, "This area has everything. It has trees and birds and buffalo  . . ."

At this moment I recognized McGrath as he emerged between two trees and walked past us.

    " . . . and actors," I added on.

McGrath looked back at us and laughed as he continued his walk. I was sort of pleased with myself at the time since, upon spotting this actor, I hadn't missed a beat as I included his profession in my exultation of the wonders of the escarpment.

McGrath is a riot:D as reggie bell in Draw! starring the one and only kirkster.

    Ms  Marvel's not real

If she was a real woman living today you don't know what she would do.

comic book escapism has never been real but the left insists on political correctness in today's comic books for the millennial demographic.

why do that since none of it is real? why change nick fury's race from white to black since none of it is real?

since this revisionism is important to the left we on the other side have just as much of a point on insisting on adherence to original canon.

    :D

  4. marvel has ruined itself with pc revisionism. back in the early seventies nick fury was a seasoned and grizzled white GI and now he is black.

maybe the new marvel would like to make ben grimm black instead of orange and pray tell try to explain the difference between the 1970s ms. marvel and the new female captain marvel.

at least ms. marvel was hot.

  5. on last nite at ten. always watch it even though not quite as funny as the out-of-towners. I had mentioned before in another thread that when mel enters the building where he works directly in front of him is this young babe with red hair and a skimpy green halter top...

but I just wanna say that years ago when this movie was syndicated nationally the station in my area would show a print with some of the dialogue replaced with dubbing. like when mel comes home to be informed by edna they they've been robbed. in the dubbed version he rushes out on to his porch and yells "it's a rip-off!!!" in the tcm print it's "you dirty rotten ****!!!

also when he's arguing with the guy in 15b above him, jacoby played by ed peck who for some reason has his lines dubbed. mel starts talking about his rear end and how that's all anyone respects. he then says "respect my **** and gets the water bucket emptied down on him.

well, I'm sorry but the dubbed dialogue from the older print sounds much, much funnier with "respect my can!"

    :D

Just a reminder while we're on the subject, tomorrow January 28, there is a full day of space cadet programming:

    • The Invisible Boy (1957)
    • The Time Machine (1960)
    • Forbidden Planet (1956)
    • 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
    • 2010 (1984)
    • Brainstorm (1983)
    • Westworld (1973)

Alas, there doesn't appear to be any appearances by Richard Carlson. :(

they are still ignoring a whole lot more than they are showing.

the above list is the same tired worn-out stuff they've been showing for years now.

I'm supposed to be grateful for the above?

    I am not!

  7. why is it that such a good actor like carlson who left such an indellible mark on the 1950s science fiction movie genre in such films as it came from outer space and creature from the black lagoon ended his acting career by playing mostly villains on TV westerns of the 1960s? when you see him on the virginian he's always a baddie. carlson made his mark in just a 2 year period with not just the above mentioned movies but also ivan tors' fare like the magnetic monster and riders to the stars. comet has been showing a black & white print of that one instead of getting the color print. what grade z special effects in riders to the stars. plastic missiles zooming around on strings. tors didn't like ray guns and aliens and thought the genre should be more science-based so he uses the most laughable cheap special effects? I just wish carlson woulda ended his career by playing more heroic characters as few actors had the knack of being so genuinely affecting on screen as he could be. whatta starfleet officer he woulda made.

Richard Carlson was also a writer and we also have his delightful appearances in some of the Bell System scholastic science films like Hemo the Magnificent.

Sorry to read about this. She truly was one of the greats.

Loved watching her on The Mothers-in-Law with Eve Arden.

Out of anything there is that could be colorized, those examples are stupid easy.  2-4 actors and a limited number of small fixed sets that never change - all with with consistent, even lighting.  As close to any "set it and forget it" scenario as you will find.

then you confirm that colorizing is practical...

now this is what tcm could do. show the two colorized films I have mentioned. Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House and chain lightning and let the tcm viewing audience decide. both colorized films were syndicated nationally AND I HAVE NOT SEEN THEM SINCE.

tcm oughta show 'em, both of 'um. let tcm viewers watch a colorized JA-3 shoot up to the upper atmosphere with bogie at the stick.

I enjoyed it a bit when I was younger, am firmly against it now. Maybe its because Roger Ebert's colorization essay

have you viewed either the colorized Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House or Chain Lightning?

see them and still oppose colorizing and I will respect your opinion.

  11. I wish someone would find that clip from Elvira when she showed VOTG and had on as a guest johnny Crawford.

the two of them did a hilarious skit. johnny's got on a dungaree jacket and cowboy hat and he tries to throw a lasso around Elvira who supposed to be 30 feet tall...

well, what ensues is hilarious. she pulls on the rope and up goes johnny on to her bosom in the form of an action figure toy. she then plucks it off and throws it away!
