I suppose it could be argued that Goldfinger established the move torwards dependence on gadgetry in the future bond films.

imagine auric goldfinger and Donald trump as golfing buddies. both appreciate gold.

*Spielberg now remaking *"West side story"
NipkowDisc replied to spence's topic in General Discussions
Spielberg is obviously burned out so I say give the public what it would like to see... remake close encounters and this time make the ETs malign supernatural manifestations that scare the pants offa adults and kids alike... and no new age go torward the light BS that spoiled the first poltergeist movie so much. -
same goes for Rosalind Russell in Gypsy.

you mean Fred Gwynne?

well I guess that puts me in my place and yeah cordell was close by but purvis was supposed to be s clockwork genius so it didn't occur to him to fork out a few bucks for a police radio receiver? I thought purvis shoulda been smart enough to have avoided any roadblocks but I guess cordell caused his genius timing to be off. benny was so bad off he shouldn't have even tried to strongarm his way outta bed even. okay it's not really all that bad but it ain't exactly the asphalt jungle either. I doan buy the antique car routine one bit. did this come out before or after the brinks robbery?

not very good. I stayed up late and lost sleep time for that? how is tcm gonna make it up to me? show Hot Spell? ok, they have my permission. first off you have this cool self-professed heist mastermind purvis played by william talman who's supposed to be this great perfectionist. sits in on a burlesque show given by his buddy benny's clip joint wife adele jergens. benny knows she doan care but he's infatuated with her and who watches her right along beside him? the great perfectionist who is the guy he's looking for that is horsing around with his wife. so purvis the mastermind meets later with his new heist recruits and tells them that they're gonna have his geometric precision timing running out of their ears. so we go to the heist outside the ball park with armored car guards apprehensively allowing an antique car to have engine trouble just a scant few feet behind their armored car. it backfires and occlusive smoke everywhere. then purvis' precision clockwork gives out and a cop car appears. purvis' right hand man benny of the wayward clip joint wife gets wounded pretty good and top cop charles mcgraw's partner gets it. so here is mcgraw at the hospital paying respects to his late partner's wife and his new partner shows up and mcgraw is not happy with the pearing. no explanation given as to why so I guess we're supposed to assume mcgraw's new partner is the department slouch or something. so here is purvis and his men attempting to get past a roadblock which they do and wind up at their hideout. benny the right hand man who figures he needs a doctor pulls a gun and wants his cut from the perfectionist so good buddy purvis lets him have it having already had is wife. later no loose ends hamilton burger who closes them with his gun plugs a cop which brings out the warm humanity in adele jurgens finally. purvis and the broad get onboard a plane but the pilot tells purvis it's no good. it's surprising purvis didn't get mad and plug the pilot. instead he abandons the broad and tries to get away on foot and brings out another expression of heartfelt humanity from adele jurgens when he runs into a taxiing plane. end of story and earl fenton's dialogue wizardry albeit slow didn't help this. a poor bargain basement attempt at crime film noir. richard fleischer directed disney's 20,000 leagues and soylent green but he sure wasn't no michael curtiz.

"Best"/worst TV or movie detectives...
NipkowDisc replied to Sepiatone's topic in General Discussions
I always liked mike Connors as mannix when I was a kid but recently watching all 8 seasons on Me TV the thing that made the show work was mike connors playing the inept gumshoe as such a nice joe. I say inept because you easily lose count of how many times someone gets the drop on him. one episode some killers are waiting for mannix in his office! joe mannix was very lucky for 8 seasons. the toughest cop or detective in either movies or TV?... ralph meeker as mike hammer in kiss me deadly. it ain't a bowling ball, mike. pandora? burn, witch, burn! -
a local PBS station showed it tonite.

I doan like musicals but continued watching has this one growing on me. the fun begins when Adam starts singing about the sobbin' women (sabine) and then says "lets go get 'em!" clever how they get the girls to close the pass for 'em.

I kinda liked the way Hud had of making his rottenness seem fair like when Lonnie gets back from the funeral the way Hud sums up his lifelong relationship with his father... "I guess you could say I helped him about as much as he ever helped me." seems reasonable.

it is interesting when you realize that barbara stanwyck played an adoption agency official in The Wilder Years with James Cagney. I found her performance in that very heartfelt and one of her most humanitarian roles.

this sicko wants to soil Bancroft's daughter after overwhelming her mother? -
and how come so many Victorian era women were named Lavinia? Katherine sloper (olivia de havilland) has an aunt Lavinia in The Heiress and a house that looks a lot like the days home.

a very enjoyable period piece. a slice of nyc life in victorian era 1883. clarence day (william powell) is a real stodgy schtootz. no wonder vinnie (irene dunne) spends most of the morning on the first floor what with the great dictator making political speeches to himself and scaring the maids. irene dunne is great at channeling penny singleton. I think that young martin milner deserved more screen time instead of wasting it on jimmy lydon as clarence jr. clarence sr. really has him trained. nothing especially endearing about lydon and what a schtootz to have a negative reaction to a 14 year old elizabeth taylor sitting on his knee. and when vinnie decides that 'clare' must be baptized the stodgy schtootz shoulda known the battle was lost right then and there. that'll teach him to dine out at delmonicos. all and all a lovely film. the best expression of criticism is made outside the church from a shot of the wide open yawp of baby william tyler wickersham.

yeah, doan smoke.

all you hafta see to know she was a hoy-faloy is see the way she is credited in every episode of The Big Valley--- Miss Barbara Stanwyck well la dee dah. "dion, forgive me!"

the enlarged Allison Hayes 50 foot woman is not horror that I feel when I gawk at her final scenes. From Hell It Came has gotten a bad rap. it is not actually that bad...but the film coulda done without mrs. Kilgore.

so when is tcm gonna submit bourdain to the vatican for sainthood? -
there should be a biopic sequel to mutiny on the bounty. after the famous story William bligh was given the governership of a tropical island which lead to a revolt of the workers on that island. Hollywood or somebody should set to film the further exciting exploits of William Bligh.
