she was much nicer to bill holden in torwards the unknown.

Yeah lydecker ol' boy, I'll go along with ya on Hugh Herbert here. Another comic relief character actor from that same era I can only take in small doses is Victor Moore.
(...and yeah, even though I was always a big fan of Tex Avery's Droopy Dog cartoons...go figure, huh?!)

I like daws butler's wolf character especially in 'billy boy'.

James Gleason is one of my favourite character actors, his performance in Meet John Doe a small jewel. Gleason could make a crusty character still likeable. He was equally effective as both a comic and dramatic performer, but I suspect he will largely be remembered because of the humour that he could bring to a scene.
didn't he play 'bomber' in I am a fugitive from a chain gang?

somebody get back to this thread and clue us in if tonite's showing is the edited or unedited print.
it should be the complete unedited print but hey...
this is tcm.

-
when tcm goes off on one of their increasingly frequent primetime eclectic binges like tonite for instance, I look at what's on MOVIES! or decades.
I will take this opportunity to ask this question...
when oh when will tcm ever replenish the contents of their fixed film coffer?
with some new contents. films they haven't shown before like The Flame Barrier, a Gardner-Levy sci-fi gem from 1958. that's the one where arthur franz, kathleen crowley and robert brown find that alien protoplasm exuding downed satellite in a cave in the mexican jungle.
tcm can't get a hold of that?

I woan even mention...Hot Spell. one of shirley booth's handful of pictures.
but tcm woan show it.

Thought i'd repost this as a new thread.I copied it from my earlier post in another thread.
Good info.for people looking for a new recorder.
There are 3 new Magnavox recorders coming out sometime this month.
The models are the MDR 865/H w/ 500 Gbt HDD,and 1 Digital HD tuner
MDR 867/H w/1 Tbt HDD,and 2 digital HD tuners
MDR 868/H w/2Tbt HDD,and 2 digital HD tuners.
These recorders are *supposed to be* able to record in true HD.
Mag.info page here.
http://www.magnavox....t/HDDVR2015.php
If these recorders actually do what Magnavox claims they'll do then these recorders will be a major step forward for recording.
And on a related note....
Is your cable co. putting false do not copy flags in your video stream making it hard to copy your movies??
Then this little HDMI > composite A/V converter will put an end to your frustration...and it's only $30.00 bucks.!!
I own one and can attest to the good PQ it delivers.Good color rendering and correct black level too!!.
I be undemandingly satisfied with just 720p resolution.

The creepy and enjoyable Night Monster is on tonight. Great cast, atmosphere, story.

I was gonna mention this. I'm watchin'!

smoke good!...good!

no, but I'm sure I've been tempted a few times.

-
Yes, it was the last film of Chaney and Naish, both actors dying two years later.
horrible, horrible film.

Guillermin was underrated. every film I've ever seen directed by him I've enjoyed. what watchability the dino de laurentis king kong remake has is a testament to his directoral ability.
his skill was leagues ahead of any modern disaster film director in hollywood today.
we lose another old school A-1 craftsman. helluva shame.
-
RIP Mr. Guillermin, I loved the Towering Inferno when I was a kid, I went to see it 3 times at the cinema.
I wish tcm would break that one out more.
-
Marvin will be very angry. Very angry indeed.
I second that sentiment.

she'll be along later on tonite in house of dark shadows as collins family matriarch elizabeth collins stoddard.

jean simmons would take over the role in the 1991 nbc dark shadows revival.
-
Guillermin also directed the 1976 dino de laurentis remake of king kong featuring the world trade center towers.

-
Most everybody probably knows this but Glenn Strange also played the bartender on GUNSMOKE.
SAM. yeah I knew that.

Tom Conway I never cared for. Now Tim Conway. . . .

bring back mickey hart!

why would you cast kristin wiig of all people in a serious science fiction survival film?
answer: you wouldn't but the hollywood of 2015 will.
this sorta thing was done much better 50 years ago by ib melchior and paul mantee.
this just looks silly to all but the most dumbed down teen and twentysomethings.pitiful.
what would really be something is for someone of today's hollywood could make a science fiction film that would have appeal to ALL generations of americans and the rest of the world as well. the young AND the old. this is what is marginalizing hollywood torwards it's decline.
if you can only think for fifteen year-olds then you gotta problem.

For those being shamed for being old school in their video watching and recording, Quentin Taratino has come to the rescue. Here is the article from today's Yahoo news online, detailing how he still likes to videotape instead of use streaming or other modes to record films:
getting into this dvr schtick just ain't worth it to me. my vcr works dependable enough plus I think viewing something on vcr playback is just plain faster and uncomplicated. maybe that's what tarantino likes.
-
Not to mention that he's now mute, unlike previously; in a near-catatonic fugue state (apparently only gets up off his back to do whatever chore Ygor gives him); and wears a woolly vest that came from who knows where (and that just as mysteriously disappears when he gets up again in 'Ghost')
yeah, but that kinda unforgivable discontinuity is mostly the fault of universal behind-wipes who decided to just disregard son of frankenstein.
another thing I doan like is the monster played by chaney jr. turning on ygor. doan like that at all. no sir!
in son of frankenstein the monster woulda done anything for ygor. ghost of frankenstein is where they really begun to let the franchise get away from them but it opens well what with the locals storming the frankenstein castle and ygor hilariously laughing down at them all chucking down loose stones on 'em even. man, that is fun.

-
I go along with Darkblue on this one, the very unusual interior set of the Frankenstein home doesn't fit in with the earlier films or that time period at all. Would anyone of wealth live in such a stark looking place? And there is no continuity at all with the earlier films; where did this "new" Ygor character come from, the laboratory (both earlier ones were completely destroyed) being conveniently located right next to the house, etc?
I love it! sure the continuity is wrong but so what. doan forget with son of frankenstein we learn that the 'Von' Frankenstein's (hey, that means they're german aristocracy) have been around for 700 years! they even have an intensifying sulphur pit to prove it.

it coulda been much better dramatically though, instead of the monster scaring some dumpy old nanny, I woulda liked mrs. frankenstein to meet the monster. still, we learn a lot here when rathbone examines the monster finding that he is superhuman with fantastically high BP systalic and diastalic and a heartbeat of over 300 beats per minute
"he's completely superhuman!"

A vcr, ay Nip.
Nipkow leaps into the 80's!
Do stores still sell blank tapes?
besides my current operational vcr I got two on standby and I'm loaded with tapes. I still have packaged vhs tapes not even opened.
onward into the future!
