  1. I always dug Mr. Bikel.  As I used to watch the old folk music TV show "Hootenanny" on ABC, he often also showed up there.

That was before I ever saw "The Defiant Ones", and was pleasantly surprised to find out he acted.  THEN it struck me!

HE was the guy who ALSO shrunk to two inches tall at the end of that TWILIGHT ZONE episode!

    I'll surely miss him.

    Sepiatone

    a very good actor.

  2. when I said 'those' I meant those that who rate being a tcm SOTM but will not be because it is to inconvenient for tcm to facilitate.

I mean how could tcm ever do complete justice to Una O'Connor as a SOTM when they doan have either The Invisible Man or Bride of Frankenstein?

tcm ain't perfect. they fail to do homage to those who certainly deserve to be SOTM like Una O'Connor and continue to shortchange the horror and science fiction genres.

by viewing horror and sci-fi as being on a lower pedestal than the classic crime/gangster/film noir pictures they do a disservice to the whole of cinema which includes horror and science fiction.

fine if that's their choice but they shouldn't crow so much about what great unparalleled cinemaphiles they be.

tcm imo really shouldn't do that if they are so willing to ignore such a large portion of cinema that is horror and science fiction. :)

  3. a Barry Sullivan windfall but I'm only interested in The Racket with one of mitchum's best performances. for knocking off cop william talman Robert Ryan gets it from frank cannon of all people. a great movie I always watch. :)

  4. Some highlights for me -

a very young Ann Sheridan in the Extras short.

a very young Robert Mitchum in the Makeup short (getting chest hair pasted on!) 1942

They were not named inidividually in the schedule, but from the UCLA Shorts & Newsreels -

the one about "Americanism" 1939 with James Cagney, Paul Muni, Edward Arnold and more.

the Gone With the Wind premiere newsreel with the last of the Boys in Gray (old soldiers) and Laurence Olivier trailing way behind Viven Leigh.

the Defense Bonds short with Ronald Reagan and a blonde Jane Wyman.

the March of Dimes newsreel with an uncomfortable looking Van Johnson and Margaret O'Brien.

Fats Domino playing the piano and being questioned (baited) by unseen reporters about why there were riots in cities over rock and roll.  Fats Domino appeared to be one of the most positive, dignified people I have ever seen

Stunts short - I'd seen this one before - scary but entertaining.

I enjoyed the evening - glad I took a chance and watched without knowing what was coming up next at times. (Got to get to work now).

hey, would they have John Nesbitt's Passing Parade: our old car?

  5. alotta John Wayne movies on tonite like Brannigan and McQ and Rio Lobo. they worked because Duke made 'em work. :)

you have your Clark Gables and your Spencer Tracys but there was only one John Wayne. time will not diminish his screen legacy...

    Viva Duke Wayne! :D

...especially if you're the good guy. :)

  6. I don't remember all that much about Commander USA except his greying sideburns and his goofy Superman wanna be costume. I remember the movies were great. It was on his show that I saw The Brainiac

back when he was on usa network he was showing the vampire's coffin with German Robles and Abel Salazar and he made an observation that I had been thinking also...

that Abel Salazar looked like Danny Thomas!

  7. Why? He is copying Soupy and White Fang and Black Tooth as an homage to them.

    Give the guy a break.

I doan really mind him paying homage to sales but that dam chicken is funnier then he is...and HE'S the voice of the chicken.

bad news for these guys. I can't make it.

  10. that arm with no body but a voice was an obvious giveaway and soupy came immediately to mind...except sales was funny and svengoolie is not.

I wish me tv would get rid of him and his chicken prop and have the show hosted one week by the commander (USA) and the other week by Elvira, babe of the dark. :)

  11. "Heavy Metal" (1981)

Hanover Fiste.....He's nothing but a low down, double-dealing, backstabbing larcenous perverted worm.  Hanging's too good for him. Burning's too good for him.  He should be torn into little bitsy pieces and buried alive!

    sigpic125495_1.gif

    STURN!!! :o

  12. Ya ever notice how at the end of each SVENGOOLIE show, there's a knock on the door, and when Sven answers it you never see the guy AT the door, just his HAND waving about as he talks?

How many of you also recall this was a device used by SOUPY SALES for years, since his "Lunch With Soupy" days?

I wonder if at one point, Svengoolie's people, or the guy who plays Sven himSELF ever gave a nod of thanks to Soupy for that?

    Sepiatone

them rubber chicken throwers ain't a throwin' hard enough.
