  1. watched park row and found it a very good film and very well done. it was quite good. but I saw the ending coming a mile away.
while mitchell gets loaded and sleeps it off overnight, the german fixes his typesetting apparatus and naturally mitchell's gonna ask about the printing press...

and there she is! the now angelic charity hackett! who woulda known? it is definitely a good film but nothing that warner bros. and michael curtiz couldn't have done better a decade or so earlier. still an exceptionally well done film. angelic charity hackett kinda looks like henry "time enough at last" bemis' wife. or is that the same actress?

  2. A NIGHT AT THE OPERA

I mean, what other movie runs the musical gamut and gives you selections by Verdi all the way to "Take Me Out To The Ballgame", HUH?!

(...can't think of another, now can ya?!)

    FANTASIA (1940)?

  3.                                                      some of my favorites:

                                                     THE TEN COMMANDMENTS

                                                     STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE

                                                     JAWS

                                                     THE ROAD WARRIOR

                                                      BLUE THUNDER

                                                      SPACEHUNTER

20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA (SCOTT)

  4. well, quite honestly I had a swell video file of hot spell in it's widescreen vistavision format...but I couldn't find it. geez, I hope I didn't delete it. no matter. I had a dvd disc to fall back on. so I ripped the vobs. next I joined the vobs and converted the whole thing to an avi. aside from the movie I had tacked on 2 of my favorite eps of all in the family.  :) all together the run time came to two hours and 17 minutes.
so I installed a video splitter to extract the movie without the all in the family eps. the movie alone comes to one hour and 25 minutes. so after doin' that I converted the shorter time avi to an mpeg2 but the video bitrate was well under 3000 kbps.

wanted 6000 kbps so I put the mpeg2 through tmpgenc to get the desired 6000 kbps..which I got. right now it's just an m2v file because I need separate video and audio streams to use dvdauthor. hafta use dvdauthor because I need a true 16:9 aspect ratio with a 720x400 resolution. my flatscreen TV is one of them true 16:9 units. so later I will be burning hot spell to a dvd again. my TV has a built-in slot loading dvd player but I be a savin' it until my old dvd player kicks off. with my setup I can record on to vhs whatever is playin' in my old dvd player as well as my TV cable signal, a small aging dvd player coby unit. coby went bankrupt about 3 years ago. people couldn't get their stuff repaired and anyone unfortunate enough to have sent their products back to coby to be fixed never got them back. so as long as the little piece of garbage continues to work I'm a-gonna use it.
my TV brand is one of them lesser generic brands. their new line of stuff (TVs, tablets and such) ain't as good as their older line stuff. their new TV line the units only got like a 20,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio. their older line units, like what I got, have a generous 200,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio. I guess the outfit hadda cut back dynamic contrast ratio-wise.

as I said before, hot spell had been posted in parts on youtube. I guess someone got itchy and wanted youtube to remove it. maybe who owns it wants hot spell to become a rarity.
you know, another film that's rare and hard to find is chuck heston and julie adams in the private war of major benson, a charming film. in it you got william demarest, milburn stone and a young sal mineo. tcm has shown it in recent years but not a lot.
well, that be my little tech story for today. :)

  5. HEY now, Rich! Don't be talkin' about ND's babe like that, dude!

Ya know, SOME guys go for those "Rubenesque" types, and ya know what they say, doncha?!: "Whatever floats your boat"!

And besides, who are we to judge anyway, RIGHT?!

(...btw, have ya ever judged "anyway"?...well, I HAVE and it's not pretty)

  6. in honor of having hot spell on dvd in it's vistavision format, for dinner tonite I had three delicious tunafish on white bread sandwiches. white albacore packed in water is the best.
in hot spell after putting in a hard day at the loan agency, alma informs jack they're having potato salad for dinner. it's a hot sticky new orleans summer evening and alma ironically says to him "that'll cool you off."
jack then informs alma that she has let the ice cubes in the pitcher of iced tea melt. :)

  7. hot spell is even more scarce now than ever. it had been on youtube in like I think eleven parts but now it is gone. what is this? tcm went for a number of years not showing god's little acre and then they brought it back. why not hot spell? it certainly is as good if not better than god's little acre.

  8. understand, mind you, that I would not be complaining about a film that tcm has never shown before, ten years ago hot spell was being shown here on tcm regularly and then it vanished and it has not been seen since...and it's not just tcm. I have not seen hot spell shown on any other channel either.

it's gone. but why is it gone? why has hot spell disappeared? hell, I doan know. it's just...gone. somebody oughta break out this underrated little film again. imo it's much better than say all fall down. much better than that. this is a film that tcm oughta be showin'. I am someone who feels that tcm's greater obligation is to the vast majority of their viewers and not just a fortunate few who's lifestyles can facilitate travel and pleasure cruising. that ain't me. hell, that ain't alotta people. I think ma joad had it right when she said "we're the people that live. they can't lick us and they can't beat us because we keep a-comin'...we're the people!" we are the majority of film lovers of america and canada and if the great uncounted multitudes of us wanna see hot spell yet again.

    well sir....

we oughta be able to see it. it should be re-presented to us....by tcm...the great professed hollywood cinemaphiles.

it is a significant film with shirley booth and a young shirley maclaine. I doan know what the story is with tcm's refusal or inability to show hot spell. they don't have a print? why don't they have a print? hot spell has been gone for too long imo. it oughta be brought back. if tcm can show gertie the dinosaur...

    well sir...

can they not get a hold of hot spell and show it?

here's tcm yahooing about a two-day showing of rear window in theaters, rear window??? shown uncounted times in recent years on tcm.
but where the heck is hot spell?

  9. NipkowDisc:  > My VHS of 'HOT SPELL' will beat up your DVD!

The reason I bought the tape in the first place was that Leonard Maltin's review cracked me up with the line "Quinn -- not just a pig but a blue-ribbon hog -- cheats on wife Booth, who spouts irritating platitudes like Hazel on speed."  What's not to ♥ about that description?  Since I couldn't rent 'HOT SPELL' anywhere near where I lived I just went on Amazon and bought a NOS copy.  Easy.

Ever heard of the movie about boiling thread, anyone?  It's called 'HOT SPOOL'!

well, the video file I have of hot spell is the widescreen vistaVision format. :D

  10. I don't know anything about this movie, but since James is the only one who's replied, besides me, then there doesn't seem to be great interest in this film by anyone but you. And since you have mentioned this movie many, many times I would like to understand why this is so important to you. You have it on DVD already so it can't be that you want to see it. You can watch it every day if you want.

    Just curious, that's all.

    :)

because tcm HAD been airing it regularly ten years ago...

    and inexplicably stopped.

it's a pretty decent little drama and tcm oughta break it out again.

  11. I got the idea for this while watching that Batman movie(on some other channel) that had HEATH LEDGER in his final film role.  Kind of sad each time I see it.  such potential WASTED!

But, one thing I noticed in his performance was that he seemed to be, going by the voice and body language, "channeling" actor RICHARD DREYFUS.

I also noticed the very talented CHRIS COOPER, as the horse trainer in SEABISCUIT, seemed to be "channeling" ex stunt man turned actor RICHARD FARNSWORTH in his performance.

But, I've never noticed( or probably never THOUGHT to notice) this sort of thing in performances of other actors in "classic" movies.  I'm assuming some of the more observant and astute members of this forum, whom fathomed what the hell I'm talking about, might have probably noticed the same sort of thing in classic '30's and/or '40's movies(and beyond?).

If so, what examples can any of you cite?

    Sepiatone

    I doan know...

jack lemmon = harold lloyd! :D

  12. already have it...

I just wanna see it shown on tcm.

they have no excuse not to be showing it..

ten years ago, tcm was showing it quite regular.

hot spell is a perfect example of tcm not conducting themselves like the great cinemaphiles they claim to be.

there was no reason for them to stop showing such a film as hot spell, yet they did.

    why? :)

why cannot tcm ask whoever has leasing rights to hot spell to lease them a print?...

    is it too hard?

  13. Paramount doesn't lease this film.    But write to them and see if they will sell it to you.

    already have it...

  14. I have a question, and to further prove my brilliant point I will ask this. anthony quinn is SOTM in april. since I doan look ahead like many others here do, I will bet that Hot Spell is nowhere to be found in the april schedule. be I be right? :D
