why tcm has never shown it I will generous say I doan pretend to know as it would make a fine companion film with Towards the Unknown. I had never seen it and the passing of Virginia Leith clinched my desire to see it. Guy madison is an air force doctor rank captain back from attending jump school. the place is hanover afb in new mexico. he first says hello in the lab to his fiance virginia leith then reports to the light colonel in command of the base. his job is to determine if a recent accident with warren stevens breaking his arm is the fault of an ejection seat or pilot error. he jumps himself and is injured and gets a newspaper headline. by that time the light colonel in charge is dead from an auto accident. no tears or remorse from anyone strangely not even virginia leith who knew the guy. he's just gone and the new commander a major is not too big on the risks incurred by human experimentation so he slows down everyone's progress. he is an old friend of base doctor and virginia leith's boss dean jagger.
jagger's pet project is a high altitude 2-man chamber referred to in the movie as a gondola. whenever we see the balloon chamber it always looks deflated even when it isn't because it is long with the gondola attached at the bottom. the gondola's handle is Skylight.
the first balloon excursion has guy madison going up with younger mort glenn played by martin milner. way up high the chamber frosts up inside which atrophies mort's reflexes and he can't jump so guy tells him to bail out at 10,000. he couldn't do that either so they hafta pull him out of a ground impacted skylight but he's OK. about this time the stiff-knecked major starts trying to do his job as per directives from washington. he takes a rocket sled ride.
the rocket sled in this picture looks quite different from the one in Towards the Unknown. that one has a big cockpit fuselage on it that is white with intersecting black lines somewhat reminscent of the black & white of the space shuttle. this one is small with a powerful high tech barebones look. fitting over the passenger seat goes this rather neat looking fiberglas shield with a plexiglass window. it is red with white dashes going sideways. it is designed to eject up at some point leaving the passenger exposed to wind blast. after his ride the stiff-knecked major is rendered temporarily blind because of an existing retinal hemorrhage condition but the ride seems to have done his eyes some good.
earlier in the movie guy and virginia get married and enjoy honeymooning on the beach, this was just before the base's light colonel buys it in a car. every bit of virginia leith we're treated to is top notch! she really had a nice frame.
after the rocket sled ride guy realizes the major ain't so bad and vice versa because initially when the major saw guy's news headline he took him for some kinda hot dog.
so the major 0kays a 2nd balloon ride for the skylight gondola just with only guy madison who's character's name is Hollenbeck.
so up we go again into the heavens. during the first balloon excursion virginia leith thought guy was gonna go splat after bailing out and his parachute was giving trouble but the major gets her to look through the binocs after he gets his parachute opened.
the 2nd excursion this time has virginia doing her vigil at ground control and knitting guy a sweater. they lose radio contact for twelve hours while guy fixes a loose wire in the radio.
eventually the frosty guy comes down in rugged country but they find him and all is well.
the balloon ascents kinda drag and are not as enjoyable as the aircraft rides we are treated to in Towards the Unknown. On the Threshold of Space deserves to be seen and shown by slackers incorporated tcm.

I doan ever think I've seen On the Threshhold of Space.
if tcm has never shown it then forget about it.
one would have better luck locating the honey bee's sugar teat then waiting for it to show up around here.

star trek will never get it's antimatter nacelles back in shape with star trek until they look at shatner and what he did so right and what they have been doing that is so wrong. they wanted shatner out of star trek but in so doing they ripped the eggs right out of the horta. a movie vehicle with shatner as kirk being resurrected from the dead woulda been a blockbuster but that's how stupid paramount was and still is.
they can now say shatner is too old...no sheet! they waited long enough for him to be. shatner must've known if he had guest-starred on any of the spin-off shows that woulda been a huge windfall for paramount so he wasn't gonna reward schtootzes who were in the process of ruining star trek so a big hooray for...the man!

tonite tcm is showing Jason and the Argonauts for the 2nd time since I lost tcm. I really on the whole doan like it but a few things occur that I enjoy. I get a kick outta the way pelias quickly loses patience with his seer and tells him to get to the point. then years later when jason saves him from drowning he really plays the guy. tells him that when his father's throne was usurped no one fought harder than him.
this is a real funny guy. then when mercury shows up I like his line "so you will believe". winds up on a olympian chess board and impresses the heck outta zeus. then some athletic fun with Hercules and other brawny guys.
and then they're off! on an island Hercules and his young sidekick have some difficulty securing some goats for the pot. I really getta kick out of how Hercules energizes himself with hyperventilating into his hands inside the base of Talos who then wrecks the argos and honor blackman whispers to todd armstrong. then it's off to find phineas the blinded man. I love how phineas faults zeus for being so unreasonable with the punishment with the harpies.
with jason's help he can finally enjoy some bowls of delicious fruit. up later pops neptune and I always wonder if he needs right guard submerged all the time in the brine. then castor beats them to kulkis to turn the king against them. jason dispatches the hydra and then the king of kulkis shows us how to grasp teeth out of a bowl.
about skeleton time that is about it for me and this turkey.
according to greek mythology medea would later murder her and jason's children so the hell with nancy kovack.
also enjoy bernard herrmann's brassy opening music.

SciFi or Horror?

I still prefer it to alien because it has a retro radio equipment look and an old school monster.
ridley scott spent a fortune to copy an American B movie premise with too much strobe flashing and an indistinct monster.
