my great idea for a sequel...
after 42 years out in space neary returns to earth wracked with guilt about abandoning Ronnie and his kids.
he then learns the awful truth. days after his going off in the alien mothership, Ronnie is on her way with her kids back to the house to reconcile with roy and is in a head on collision and all 4 are killed. learning this his guilt puts roy neary in the nuthouse.
end of story.

yeah screencaps of that shot of Maureen's legs are just everywhere.

Those aren't her legs.
who's then?
-
of course! the beautiful Maureen O'Hara. in the sam peckinpah western the deadly companions she and brian keith are camping out and the camera gives us a fantastic shot of Maureen's luscious legs.

they forgot this guy.

Spielberg could use some mashed potatoes in his diet right about now. if trying to outdo Robert Wise is the only idea he can come up with than it's time for him to start selling pencils to cute little rubbery ETs.

I think I've seen the special edition scenes on tcm.
-
why does slack tcm never never choose to do right by their viewers? they never show the right CE3K print with the best scene at the moorcroft wyoming train depot.
missing of course from tonite's airing. the huckster peddling his early warning poison gas system. hilarious lines..."you're gonna be real sorry if you don't have one of these early warning systems such as a bird or a gas mask. why even my dog has a gas mask and anyone of you is worth more than a dog."
I crack up everytime I hear that schpeel.
an idea or two that would improve this movie immensely. when roy is taking his late nite shower with his clothes on in the bathtub. I love his line about the watch but after Ronnie gets peeved if only she would turn the shower back on full force but cold. I bet he wouldn't find that funny.
another idea would be when he goes out into his yard to the children's swings and starts yelling up to the sky what is it.
the schtootz could end the movie on a high note right there by just giving who's up there the bird and just going on with my life.

I have a feeling Nip probably prefers THE GREEN BERETS (1968) since it includes the Duke.
no, actually never cared too much for it. jim hutton getting seized up and perforated is just too much of a downer for me.

It was really produced in 1959, but I don't think it premiered in America until a year later. It's never shown on TCM when they do their various tributes to Bacall. But it's quite good. The production values are outstanding, the plot is very involving and Kenneth More works rather well with Bacall. Also, it's nice to see Bacall step out of her normal comfort zone and do something in the action adventure genre.
Produced by the Rank Organisation. In Eastman Color and CinemaScope.

I watched 1958's The Young Lions on TCM on Memorial Day. All 164 minutes. I've never cared much for this movie, but Leonard Maltin gives it such a grand review, I thought maybe another look would change my mind. It didn't. I suppose screenwriter Edward Anhalt wanted to stay fairly faithful to Irwin Shaw's novel, but I think he should have taken some creative liberties. The first hour really drags and, in my opinion, could have been cut by a good 15 minutes. The last half of the film, during the battle scenes, is very entertaining, but then it ends too abruptly. Brando, as the confused Nazi officer, is at his best, Clift (this was after his horrible car accident) as the U.S. soldier is compelling, but I've always had a problem with Dean Martin in dramatic roles. I kept expecting Jerry Lewis to pop up with a comedy routine. Martin was type-cast as a singer who was drafted before he was to open in a Broadway musical. He doesn't seem to have much to do, other than woo Barbara Rush, until the end of the movie. Then his actions left me scratching my head. The final scene with Clift and Hope Lange seems to have been tacked on as an after thought for a happy ending.
it takes the whole film for brando to realize he made a mistake becoming a Nazi.
only thing I like is the opening music by hugo friedhofer
got a nice monotonous drumbeat.
