Alexander I could tolerate much more than Michael.

Michael was really a terror, especially to poor Maggie and Philip Todd, one of Michael's 'guardians.'

one unexpected plus of the whole LEVIATHAN STORYLINE has been- if this makes sense- that many of the episodes have been character driven as opposed to plot driven- the latter of which is primarily how DARK SHADOWS operated 99.9% of the time to its credit and its fault, but THIS STORYLINE has opened up some interesting 1970 real-time drama AND CONFLICT between BARNABAS AND JULIA and ELIZABETH AND CAROLYN AND CAROLYN'S FATHER as well as the age old BARNABAS VS. BARNABAS struggle.

  2. still not mad at THE LEVIATHAN(s?) storyline...although i am sorry they "aged out" THE LITTLE BLONDE KID FROM QUEENS who played THE BEAST AT AGE 8 so quickly. He was such an uncanny combination of spooky and hilarious, like PAUL WILLIAMS possessed by JOE PESCI...

"YO! It'd be a REAL FREAKIN SHAME if sumthin happened to this here antique shop, Lady..."

Dark Shadows Before I Die: Dark Shadows Episode 905 - 12/15/69

also, forgive me for invoking his name, but does anyone else see a resemblance to the 45th PRESIDENT?

    Another of my favorite lines!

SOAPDISH is imminently quotable. it's on AMAZON PRIME and I have been avoiding watching it because I am worried, ironically, it might induce melancholia for both the glorious bygone age of daytime television and BIG SCREEN ROMANTIC COMEDY.

(For the record, I myself struggle with "The BILL STYRON THING" and have to be careful at certain times as I am susceptible to nostalgic depression)

Has anyone ever thought about storylines if the show had continued?  What plots would they have mined?

Sam Hall said they spent hours (meaning minions) going through everything in the public domain from which to borrow/steal.

I'm thinking something in the realm of extraterrestrial UFOs would have been in the picture!   So few years from E.T.

There was a lot of stuff they could have done, War of 1812, some Civil War related story, they could have tackled Prohibition with some gangster liquor smuggling Collins's. They could have even brought in Native American ghosts. Lol

How about seeing the Collins family and supernatural fiends tangle with hippies? (And no, Buzz doesn't count, he was so lame!).

A really hot topic would have been how to deal with the civil rights at the time....but then we hardly ever saw any African-Americans on DARK SHADOWS, save Tom Jennings' nurse and King Johnny's servant Istvan.

Maybe Istvan could have returned as a ghost to haunt Barnabas for sending him off Widows' Hill.

Another idea for diversity on DARK SHADOWS....how about if they had added Blacula in there?

With Martinique already part of the core story, I Walked With a Zombie remains a possibility. Lots of opportunities for black actors in a Martinique-based story.

A beautiful Latina actress named Diana Davila was on for about three days as a vampire victim. I was sorry she wasn't on more.

How about a short parallel time story where the Willie Loomis who finds Barnabas' coffin is a hippie stoner?

I cannot begin to tell you how much I have enjoyed OUR EXCHANGE AT "THE WRITER'S TABLE" HERE. All we need is GARRY MARSHALL sitting at the head emphatically saying: "Just so long as it isn't JAMAICAN HOMELESS PEOPLE SUCKIN' SOUP ALL DAY!"

BTW, I think we're all in agreement that a GIRL'S BOARDING SCHOOL in MARTINIQUE run by COUNTESS NATALIE who is eventually (and ironically) decapitated BY AN ARMY OF VOODOO ZOMBIES led by WILLIAM MARSHALL as VOODOO MASTER “OTHELLO LEGENDRE” was the way to go.

and later on, THE HEAD OF COUNTESS NATALIE and  THE HEAD OF JUDAH ZACHERLY get together during an 1812 parallel time storyline and become DAYTIME'S NEW SUPERCOUPLE.

The wedding of their disembodied heads is attended by the disembodied head of ELIZABETH TAYLOR and becomes the HIGHEST RATED DAYTIME EVENT EVER!!!!

Joan Bennett had a difficult time keeping up with the pace of the show and also had a hard time reading the teleprompter without her glasses. I love her scenes when Barnabas first introduces himself. She is the regal mistress of Collinwood, totally in charge, which nobody can challenge. Her banter with Selby in the 1895 segment is marvelous. I think those two played off each other wonderfully.

It was also, basically live performing, Which causes the release of endorphins and adrenaline and all kinds of body chemicals that you can’t control and wreak havoc on your body and concentration . And for some people it never gets better.

    i despise live performing.

I personally would be a stuttering, stammering mess shaking like Joe Cocker on a caffeine binge if I had to Perform a live scene with dialogue that I had to either remember or read off of a Teleprompter.

a HOME INVASION story, THE DESPERATE HOURS-style could have worked, but could only be stretched out so long. and if was seen as being too MANSONesque, it could could offend. but there is potential.

(images of the MURDEROUS HIPPIES from THE MACDONALD CHILD scared me as a kid in the early 80s when i saw FATAL VISION)

THE SPIRAL STAIRCASE and JACK THE RIPPER...maybe LIZZIE BORDEN.

TIME TRAVEL opens up certain possibilities, although I think DER GOLEM would be a stretch...and the budget isn't there for PHANTOM OF THE OPERA.

maybe NAZI SUB intrigue in 1941, or THE WHALES OF AUGUST, but with vampires...

    What, no?

I think that the Leviathan story really didn't hold my interest much as a 13 year old.  I guess I kept watching waiting for more.  If I revisit it now I might feel differently since I haven't seen it since the olden days.

i dunno what your tv set up is, but if you can download TUBI, go for it. They've got a lot of great stuff, as well as ALL the post-BARNABAS intro episodes of DARK SHADOWS very clearly indexed and catalogued with minimal commercials.

the LEVIATHON storyline was, as i recall it, QUITE SHORT compared with most of the other DS plotlines.

The main reason for this, Lorna, was the simultaneous making of the two movies. If you'd read or seen Rebecca and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, you pretty much knew how the story was going to go. The cast was divided into movie and TV groups, and the writers had to work around that with--such is the nature of soaps--no time off. The overreach of making movies and a serial simultaneously doomed the show as thoroughly as any witch's curse. Dan Curtis may be the David O. Selznick of daytime TV. With predictable stories, DS no longer had that "Dirk bit three people today!" vibe where you just had to watch.

At its best DS created its own memorable villains--Barnabas (originally), Angelique, Rev. Trask, Nicholas Blair, Quentin (originally), Count Petofi. Gerard was basically a rerun of Evil Quentin, but James Storm played the villainy well, too. The casting department outdid themselves finding those particular actors. The writers never developed the potential of Marie Wallace's Eve as a villain, but she did leave the show to play a more prominent role on Somerset. The stories weren't always polished or thoroughly developed, but once Barnabas became the hero of the show, DS wasn't simply repeating the vampire and werewolf stories the way 1970 Parallel Time was a knockoff. Even the Leviathan story wasn't a bad idea: Collinwood threatened by a group with certain magical powers is a solid premise.

I thought the concept of Parallel Time would be the salvation of DS because the show could go to different eras in the past with new characters for the repertory actors to play, but the show was canceled too soon for that to happen.

The brutality of HOUSE OF DARK SHADOWS crept into 1970 PARALLEL TIME as well, Which would’ve been all right if the storyline and only run for a week or two, but it just goes on and gets SADISTIC.

I’m going back and filling in some of the episodes I missed from the leviathan episodes, and I don’t mind them at all. In fact I don’t understand the beef people have with the whole leviathan story, it’s fine to me and provides a great storyline for Joan Bennett, she really seems to be enjoying herself.

  10. Now that I am more familiar with the progress of the show, and have even gone back to fill in some gaps I missed and the catch up on earlier storylines as well, I will daresay that all shows go in peaks and valleys and have ups and downs...if I may be so bold as to say, I think DARK SHADOWS "lost it" in the 1970 PARALLEL TIME storyline (the REBECCA knockoff), which is just SO DARK and also POORLY CLOSED and has lots of characters who come and go with little explanation...everyone was also so unlikeable in it.
