1. If you're really interested in a particularly egregious example of "far too many words," spotty punctutation, story ambiguity and blatant racism, may I recommend LOOK HOMEWARD, ANGEL by Thomas Wolfe?- a book I have tried to make it though about six times, the last attempt ending somewhere circa page 400 with my well-worn copy flying across the room. THE SUN ALSO RISES may be about nothing, but at least it's only 200 pages about nothing. ANGEL is 800 pages about [...] N O T H I N G. In fact, if you want a head start, I'll sum up the first 400+ pages of LOOK HOMEWARD, ANGEL for you: a kid grows up in Asheville, NC in the early twentieth century. His mom runs a boarding house and his dad drinks a lot. There. Boom. I just summed up the entirety of the 400 pages (with tiny margins, small font and chapters that don't start on new pages.) It is also the MOST ambitiously, dowright poetically racist thing I have EVER read. 2. I hate how instructors in the same dept. never get together to compare their assignments, because they always end up assigning the same damn stuff over and over again, and often it's the most milquetoast, easily digested and deconstructed stuff. It's like, guys, there are works out there BESIDES THE TEMPEST and THE GREAT GATSBY you could assign....

RICH'S MADE-UP TCM GENERAL DISCUSSION POLLS

June Foray also did the voice of Natasha Fatale (of "Boris and Natasha"). Now, had she dubbed Mary Badham in THAT character's voice, the episode would be an all-time classic. (Kind of a LYLAH CLARE prequel.) -
It just ocurred to me that MICHAEL CAINE has never been honored. That's overdue.

Somethin like that yeah. I don't know if they are true or not, but various media reports have portrayed her as somewhat reclusive, loathe to travel and disdainful of HOLLYWOOD (she's very conservative.) She also hasn't made a film since 1968, so you know, there's that too. -

i WOULD GIVE THIS POST MY FULL WEEK'S ALLOWANCE OF "I LIKES" IF I COULD. ps- I really enjoyed the one where they stop making spermicidal lubricant and Lady Brett Ashley has to go on a drugstore crawl to horde as much of it as she can before it's gone forever.

The Egyptian on TCM Sat. 8/1. How'd that happen?
LornaHansonForbes replied to Swithin's topic in General Discussions
I was thinking, one of the reasons why I found THE EGYPTIAN so interesting is because- with 50's biblical epics- they are either deliciously bad but substantively lacking or well-meaning and dull as dishwater. THE EGYPTIAN- at least as much of it as I was able to see- was an intriguing mixture of camp and class....and all so watchable (and with an intriguing and very clear, and slightly subversive, moral to it.) again- please encore this one, TCM. -

Are they really "stars"? Some questionable SUTS selections.

MARY OF SCOTLAND is a fascinating failure, not just for Hepburn, but for director John Ford who was waaaaay out of his element with this one. it is definitely one that I would recommend people watch though, as there is some interesting backstory to it. -

I think one of my favorite internet comments of of the past few years was on the sad occasion of Joan Rivers' passing: "She died as she lived: in surgery." -

The only eyebrow raiser on the list for me is RAYMOND MASSEY, more because he wasn't a particularly good or even interesting actor, and his star status is debateable. Some of the other names get slight eyeroll from me, but more because they've appeared so many times before- ie Katharine Hepburn. But overall I'm fine with the list. -

Amen to that. (seriously though, when she took it off, I bet she looked like Katharine Helmond in BRAZIL.) -

I kept thinking "Oh, I bet Venus or Serena would totally rock one of those in a heartbeat." -
I dunno, are we talking strictly classic era or modern-day too? Cause have you seen Nick Nolte, Ryan O'Neal, Travolta, and Mickey Rourke lately?

I only now remembered it, but did anyone else get a kick out of the constant presence of Nefer's cat in her scenes? I really kept waiting for her to ask someone to come and pet her...well, you know. *I also also note that a la the cat in the SAY A PRAYER FOR ME TONIGHT scene from GIGI, the feline actor in THE EGYPTIAN also seemed to have been given something to sedate it....and maybe to keep from clawing Darvi's eyes out for her line reads. -

In the chaos surrounding the film after Brando backed out, Tor was approached- but in a rare show of discretion, emphatically refused to sign on, telling his agent to inform Zanuck that "Tor no like Bella Darvi; he no understand word she say and she crap actress." -

According to imdb, it was because of his heavy "street" accent.: The voices of the characters played by Mike Mazurki and Leo Gordon were dubbed by other actors for a more classical - and less American-street - quality. -
the more I think about it, the more "the Sun Also Rises" resembles "Seinfeld" in my mind. If I recall correctly, it is also about a group of friends: 3 men and 1 woman. And again it's pretty ambitiously plotless. seriously, 200 pages and not a damn thing happens. it's been 20 years since I read it, but I do recall liking "A Farewell to Arms" very very much. I very enthusiastically followed it up with "for whom the bell tolls", which I was extremely disappointed in it.

"yes John, I know what you mean." "really? Cuz you seem like a real classy dame. When I say w**** I mean someone who...." "yes I know." "For money." "right, I got you John." (I think it was from a documentary about Garfield.)
