I'll rent something by KUROSAWA tonight.

I know, and- truly, as a friend- I appreciate that. I don't even know why I do these things from time to time...
-
Also, thank you for referencing SHOWGIRLS. THAT'S the MUSICAL EXTRAVAGANZA/EMPTY SOULESS REMAKE that we NEED in 2022!

SHOOT! I've gotten too old to GOOGLE SPELL CHECK! Apologies! (I have always felt that if one is going to post a critical review, one should spell everyone's name correctly and I fell short, sorry.) ps- also that scene in SINGLES...

Once again I feel compelled to apologize at the start of a review... Weekends are hard for me to get through, and sometimes I do odd, risky things that are not good for my mental health, and for some, odd, self-destructive reason, I watched DON'T LOOK UP (2021) on NETFLIX. I did not like it, but to be fair, I skipped over parts of it that were slow. Sigh. I know people have a right to make their own movies and tell their own stories, but I think I'll go sit with MARTIN SCORCESE MARTIN SCORSESE and scowl in the corner about the death of cinema [EDIT: after he, properly, BERATES me for misspelling his name...and also, to be fair, i would not be surprised if SCORSESE liked this movie all right]. this is, like HAPPINESS or GUMMO, an anti-film, it does not exist to be nutritive or deep, it's casual and dismissive, painting in broad strokes, empty and angry and it doesn't want you to like it or have a good time at all or come away with anything other that a sense of doom. in other words, much like WEST SIDE STORY, it's the film we really didn't ****ing NEED in 2021. Excuse me language, I'm just...God, this one chapped my ***. it's also a 2 hours plus TALES FROM THE CRYPT episode, leading up to that ironic comeuppance we all know is in the wings. I also think there is an argument to be made that it is pro-suicide. I actually though DiCAPRIO was all right, and I'm not a fan. For quite some time I have been growing increasingly disenchanted with STREEP - this film does not help to resolve that issue. Bet this sneaks away with some surprise OSCAR NOMINATIONS whenever they're gonna bother with those....
-
actually, I think she got a GOLDEN GLOBE nomination and one or two CRITIC'S SOCIETY awards or citations or however they do those things, I wasn't surprised when she got nominated (she deserved it.)
-
The STREISAND JOKES pave the way for some of the funniest lines in the whole thing (see 1:42) , so I personally am fine with it.
-
please forgive the derailment of the thread with the above levity. here, to apologize to all, enjoy this trailer for BROTHER JOHN, which was mentioned (by a critic, I can't recall who) in a TCM interstitial that used to run as a good example of one of his more rebellious performances and films (note, I have not seen it) maybe it will air soon? (it looks interesting)

I should have noted that the director of THE TOWN THAT DREADED SUNDOWN, CHARLES B PIERCE would go on to do THE LEGEND OF BOGGY CREEK and THE LEGEND OF BOGGY CREEK II, which is one of the FEW MST episodes that EVEN I, a fan of the SCI FI ERA cannot make it through to save my life.

authors note: believe it or not, even I sometimes wonder if I don't "overdo it" sometimes- either in heaping praise or disdain, making low humor, or using bad language in my reviews. if any of those habits of mine bother you I just want to make it clear that: 1. I understand 100% and 2. You should skip this review. Jesus H. Christ this movie sucks. I watched THE TOWN THAT DREADED SUNDOWN on TCM ON DEMAND last night. Amateur. Night. In. Dixieland. Except, ODDLY ENOUGH, it was WELL-SHOT AND LIT, I mean, they filmed night scenes at night and everything was in focus and framed and whoever did the cinematography, I HOPE THEY WENT ON TO BETTER THINGS. The production design wasn't bad either, it was set in the 1940s and a lot of vintage autos were used. UNFORTUNATELY, since it is mechanically not a bad movie, YOU THINK THAT IT IS GOING TO GET BETTER IN TERMS OF STORY AND DIRECTION AT SOME POINT.... SPOILER: IT DOES NOT. The acting was SO BAD that BEN JOHNSON who had WON AN OSCAR just a few years earlier just degrades before you eyes, almost everyone in it is SO AMATEUR and the HAMFISTED DIALOGUE does not help matters, NOR DOES THE CONSTANT VOICEOVER NARRATION, MONSTER-A-GO-GO STYLE BY AN UNSEEN NARRATOR that INFORMS US IN THE END... SPOILERS (EXCEPT NOT REALLY, READ THIS, PLEASE, YOU NEED TO KNOW) They never caught the killer. Thank you everybody for coming to our little hour and a half of technically adequate filmmaking with no payoff whatsoever, helmed by someone who couldn't direct a pack of lemmings off a ***ing cliff. [note: I stole that LEMMINGS OFF A CLIFF bit from someone but I can't recall who]

AND IN THE CASE OF IN THE HEEEEEEEAT OF THE NIGGGGGHHHHIT, that irritates me A LOT. Because it's the legit Best Performance by an actor in a leading role in 1967. But it's not milquetoast or unassuming, he's not helping a bunch of dizzy white nuns, and he doesn't stand on his head and spit nickels in an attempt to STEAL EVERY SCENE (unlike his costar who did win.)
