  1. I think if BABE hadn't won best Musical/comedy in 1995/6, it would not have gone on to get its well-deserved Oscar nominations.
  2. I stand by an earlier statement in another thread that 1992 was a crummy year for movies.
  3. MARILYN MONROE actually won BEST ACTRESS MUSICAL/COMEDY for SOME LIKE IT HOT, but never came close to an Oscar.
  4. honestly, I think it's kinda sorta a shame, because if you go back and take inventory of past winners and nominees, I feel like the HFPA actually made wiser calls than the AMPAS on a regular basis (odd moments aside, like SCENT OF A WOMAN winning best bicture, Drama)
  5. for those not prone to clicking links, it seems as if THE GOLDEN GLOBES have gone the way of that tree falling in the woods- because of long-time-building animus towards members of the HOLLYWOOD FOREIGN PRESS, a mass boycott has been organized and as of 1/5/2022 no celebrity presenters have been booked no nominees will be in attendance it will not be televised.

  8. with all apologies to JAKEEM, I kinda feel like this story is big enough to merit its own [specific] thread: https://dlisted.com/2022/01/05/no-celebrities-have-agreed-to-appear-at-the-2022-golden-globe-awards/
  9. while we're at it, I think it's about time the world welcomed DAME KATE BUSH
  10. See, that’s why I love this website, I am constantly learning new things. There is no apostrophe in “Howards end,” Sheena Easton is Scottish, There are six levels to the Kinsey scale….
  11. She's giving me TINKERBELL'S DRUNKEN AUNT vibes....
  12. They probably tolerate one another’s existence.
  13. I think it was a DEAD MANS FEMUR, but maybe she did something with a crucifix too, A lot of what I remember about that film is a blur.
  14. i really really really really really really wish LYNN REDGRAVE had won the Oscar for GODS AND MOSNTERS. I know there were people who said it was a CLORIS LEACHMAN impression, but I thought she was truly the heart of the film. the only legit excuse for her not winning was that she didn't have enough screen time- but then again, ahem, look at who did win supporting actress that year....[i'll give you a hint, it was for roughly 7 minutes of scowling]
  15. I thought she was THE MOST FUN CHARACTER IN THAT WHOLE FILM!!!!!!
  16. although I still say there is NO DOUBT that LYNN was THE FUN ONE!
  17. i've brought this up elsewhere, but I actually don't care for most of VANESSA REDGRAVE'S early work, I find her cold, remote and a little hostile- as if various members of her family were being held at gunpoint just off-camera... but then, in 1993, I went into HOWARDS END (no APOSTROPHE) and was CHARMED AGAINST MY WILL by this delicate, ephemeral, WARM presence onscreen. and I've since seen her in some other films- THE GATHERING STORM and PRICK UP YOUR EARS- come to mind immediately, where she is very vibrant and real- in PRICK UP YOUR EARS, she genuinely plays every scene as if she has just put her clothes on after experiencing the most marvelous o r g a s m ever, and it's fascinating. I just wish I could someday get the chance to see KEN RUSSELL'S THE DEVILS (possessive apostrophe, no apostrophe, plural) so I could reevaluate her work in that one, it is such a FLAMETHROWER TO THE SENSES, I have no recollection of her in it all these years later.
  18. WALLACE FORD and I share a birthday- February 12th.
  19. that EM FORSTER was a clever little bunny rabbit....
  20. You literally caused me to have an epiphany this morning and a whole new appreciation for HOWARDS END. OF COURSE THERE IS NO POSSESSIVE APOSTROPHE because HOWARDS END belongs to NO ONE, it is a stand in for ENGLAND, or (possibly) HEAVEN, or just SOCIETY ITSELF, it is where we spend our days, where some end in tragedy, and (in spite of several spurious claims to the contrary) it is TRULY owned by not one person but many.
