RICHARD BEYMER starred in a rather obscure 1963 black-and-white movie called THE STRIPPER with Joanne Woodward.  I've seen it.  It's decent enough.   I remember wanting to see the movie for a number of years -- this goes back to the late 1990s -- and when I couldn't find it for 'rent' at any local video stores I ended up buying a 'new' copy via Special Order.  I would not be denied what I wanted to watch!

THE STRIPPER has a similar plot line to the 1961 B&W movie "A Cold Wind in August" with Lola Albright and Scott Marlowe, btw.

There's my 2¢ 'story' on Richard Beymer.

surely you have this masterpiece on VHS, no?

The only time I remember seeing Beymer was on a couple of episodes of  "Murder She Wrote".

Was he simply unlucky or did he have a particular problem?

I don't know, but I'd like to, and if anyone reading knows why RICHARD BEYMER'S CAREER WENT "PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFT!!!" after WEST SIDE STORY, please so fill us in.

Within three years of starring in the best picture winner, he was doing guest roles on TV, by the 1980's he was in stuff like SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT 3

I know the surviving cast of WEST SIDE STORY- CHAKIRIS/MORENO/TAMBLYN have kinda ostracized him, he didn't go to the reunion (or wasn't invited) and NATALIE WOOD hated him and treated him like **** while filming, but apparently that had to do with her being peeved they didn't hire WARREN BEATTY for the main part.

I think he is the one big problem with WEST SIDE STORY, he is miscast and not particularly engaging.

Killing off most of the big name cast probably didn't help either. Especially killing off Jack Nicholson twice. (Sylvia Sidney's cackle of laughter as congress was blown up seemed to be the one element everyone liked)

"The Nancy Reagan Chandelier!" also got a good laugh, no small feat seeing as how it comes around the 50 minute mark (we were all worn down to nubs by then.)

What you found was Best Worst Thing That Ever Could Have Happened... by Lonny Price, who was the original Charley Kringas in Merrily...

It's not just about the failure of the production.  It will resonate with anyone who lost their youthful optimism, or saw their heroes fail, or wonder what might have been...

    YES THATS IT!

I will give it a second try this evening and hopefully my Netflix will cooperate this time.

The one week when nobody wants to go near a shopping mall, those who do rarely want to go for a movie, teens who do want to go to a movie are geeked to wait one more week to go to the big blockbuster that carved out that valuable third-week slot, and parents with kids are going to wait for after-Christmas school vacation, after the holiday chaos is over. The Princess & the Frog, Voyage of the Dawn Treader, Monster Hunter, Mortal EnginesJumanji: the Next Level, the Day the Earth Stood Still remake, In the Heart of the Sea...All fell victim to the Bermuda Triangle of December movie releases.

    also, debateably, MARS ATTACKS!!

(although one could blame MARS ATTACKS!! for the failure of MARS ATTACKS!!)

  6. I was superbored last night and cruising NETFLIX when I came across a recent documentary about the failure of MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG ca. 1981, but every time I tried to play it, NETFLIX crashed and I went back to my home screen.

NETFLIX knows I've been talking smack about it.

    (whatever, they deserve it)
