  1. I'd say "STUNNING" was more the mot juste ...(i only just now got up off the floor where i landed after passing out from shock a minute ago)
  2. wait.....WHAT???????????????? IF YOU TOLD ME THEY DISCOVERED THE SURFACE OF MARS WAS COVERED IN LOBSTERS, I COULD NOT POSSIBLY BE MORE STUNNED THAN I AM BY THIS NEWS. DAMN, NOW THAT I KNOW THIS, HE SHOULD'VE BEAT JOHN MILLS IN "RYAN'S DAUGHTER" FOR SUPPORTING ACTOR!!!!! THAT IS *ONE HELL* OF A PERFORMANCE!
  3. I'll say it before and I'll say it again, there's nuthin like a bad review from me to make people FLOCK TO SEE SOMETHING! (I'm like the BOSLEY CROWTHER of this site)
  4. (heavy sigh) Hoo boy, I don't know where to even begin with this one. [EDIT- i APOLOGIZE FOR MY LANGUAGE IN THIS ONE] Spurred on by catching some of THE CELLULOID CLOSET, I watched the 1970 version of THE BOYS IN THE BAND, which (surprise here) I have never seen before. the most common word people use to describe this movie (before proceeding to QUICKLY tack on how grateful they were for it and how trailblazing it was) is "dated"- which is a stupid way to describe any movie because ALL movies ARE DATED. They all came out in a certain year and then, as opposed to freezing completely, TIME MOVED ON (as it does)...Thus, EVERY MOVIE EVER IS "DATED" WHETHER IT TRIES TO BE OR NOT. "Dated" in the case of THE BOYS IN THE BAND is (IRONICALLY) A POLITE WAY OF SAYING "THIS MOVIE IS ***ING HATEFUL to its CORE" because SERIOUSLY, EVEN I GOT TIRED OF ALL THE PETTY B!TCHERY AND SNIPING BY LIKE AN HOUR INTO IT, AND I USUALLY HAVE AN ENDLESS APPETITE FOR PETTY B!TCHERY AND SNIPING- (WHY DO I EVEN NEED TO SAY THIS, ARE THERE ANY OF YOU WHO KNOW ME WHO DOUBT IT?) It's basically the story of A FABULOUS NEW YORK APARTMENT with terrace, and some people who happen to be inside of it one evening ... including THE WICKED WITCH OF THE WEST: who IS HAVING A BIRTHDAY PARTY FOR HER SISTER, THE EQUALLY VICIOUS BUT MORE CASUALLY EVIL WICKED WITCH OF THE EAST: over the course of the next hour and a half there is just so much venom spewing and theatrics and JAZZ HANDS! and, I have to say- the writer of the play VERY CLEARLY INSERTED HIMSELF INTO THE ROLE OF THE MAIN CHARACTER- and as such, (nearly) every other role is terribly underwritten or brushed over in the broadest of broad strokes, most especially the single BLACK GAY MAN who for some reason wants to hang out with this ****ing COVEN of petty F@GGOTRY. ** LIKE DO YOU GUYS DO THIS EVERY WEEK????? sorry, this movie just wore me the HELL out. any of you who were around when it came out, did it strike you the same way? **sorry for this, but i tried and failed to think of any other way to say it.
  5. MIGHT I ADD: a completely hare-brained, idiotic, nonsensical. NTH-Rate HACK idea for a movie and STOCKWELL in his role works so hard at selling it, I'm not the least bit surprised that HOLLYWOOD ending up making the movie for real years later (as THE LIFE OF DAVID GALE) DEAN STOCKWELL gives, in retrospect, one of the most pivotal, important performances of the film.
  6. YES THANK YOU! And sorry for misspelling JOEL'S name, I NEVER, EVER GET IT RIGHT.
  7. HE KEPT WORKING STEADILY AFTER 1988 as well...mostly in TV.

  9. "I am thinking today of that beautiful land I shall reach when the sun goeth down When through wonderful grace by my Saviour I stand Will there be any stars in my crown? Will there be any stars, any stars in my crown? When at evening the sun goeth down When I wake with the blest in those mansions of rest Will there be any stars in my crown?"
  10. STARS IN MY CROWN (1950) with JOEL MCREA and DOWN TO THE SEA IN SHIPS (1949) with LIONEL BARRYMORE are both WONDERFUL.
  11. Also, this thread has nearly 800 views and almost 70 replies, so if anyone at TCM is watching, give Kent Smith that SUTS day! (And give Katharine Hepburn the month off, Lord knows she’s made enough appearances.)
  12. He’s about to be devoured, digested and spit up the poor dope...just like a gecko in a nature film.
  13. THE BEST CHILD ACTOR OF ALL TIME. (Period.)
  14. Thank you! It is shameful how little I know of silent films, and sadly if a remake or another film uses the same title of a classic property (ie the 2003 film UNDERWORLD), I find that imdb listings for the newer movie(s) tend to come before the listing for the original (and sometimes the original does not come up in the initial search results.)
  15. What is UNDERWORLD? Just Looked it up on IMDb and did not find an entry. (My knowledge of silents is kind of spotty.)
  16. also also in re: TAKING TAGER MOUNTAIN, while I do give it a hard time for not being quite right in some of its predictions 9and its production design), there were a lot of things that seemed quite prescient and even clever in predicting.
  17. yes, i read up on that, it sounds pretty bad (it includes some modern handheld cellphone footage and a new ending...which i guess can't be too much worse than the non-ending they went with in 1983.) all in all, as disturbed as I was of the scenes of PAXTON with the YOUNG BOY, it was not a bad film or a badly made film. Weird as **** though...definite CARNIVAL OF SOULS vibe.
  18. yes, I did a real TRIPLE TAKE when I read that on wikipedia!!!!
  19. for the first time in a long long time, I watched a non-horror classic film on TCM, CONFESSIONS OF A NAZI SPY (1939)- which was an early docudrama-style picture about GERMAN SPIES LIVING IN AMERICA, I could see a young MARK HELLINGER in the audience taking notes. NAZIS, I HATE THESE GUYS- but damned if I won't watch just about anything about 'em, and this was a pretty engaging film...largely for its prescience, but also for the FOUR DIFFERENT ACTORS who pop up throughout the proceedings- all four of whom would have drastically different career trajectories in the coming decades. FRANCIS LEDERER- a handsome man- who abandons his vanity for his part and does a tremendous job, but who would not have much of a career in film, although he would appear in others (including MIDNIGHT from the same year) EDWARD G ROBINSON, who dominates in all of his 15(ish) minutes of screentime- this might just be the genesis of EDDIE G's "stalwart highly competent investIgator" type that would show up later in DOUBLE INDEMNITY and THE STRANGER. GEORGE SANDERS is in it with a flat top (!) and a German accent (!!) playing a Nazi (!!!) and he is invested.... PAUL LUKAS is also in it and he is adequate, which is the nicest thing I think I have ever had to say about him.
  20. I am however amused by the fact that in 1983 they looked 40 years into the future and saw that everyone would be driving ****ty late 70s European cars and using big clunky, Selectric typewriters. Also no cell phones or Internet. just uncanny.
  21. I feel like I need to elaborate just a little bit and give a fair warning here, TAKING TIGER MOUNTAIN Which aired on TCM last night and which is available on demand has a hard core, explicit, actual sex scene between Bill Paxton and the young actress which alternates between scenes of Paxton with the actress and Paxton in bed with a 12 year old boy. Nothing overtly sexual happens with the boy, just embraces, but it’s very disturbing. Sorry, I’ve never heard of this film before. I’m watching for the first it just now, but since I brought up the subject and have a lot of you interested, I feel guilty not warning you as I just saw the scene. its very disturbing
  22. Oh my. yeah, this is definitely not a film for everyone.... wow.
  23. Oh my. I just saw an honest to God hardcore XXX oral sex act in a movie airing on TCM!!!!!! this one may not be for everyone....
