Holy **** you guys,
I am, like, all of four minutes into “Taking Tiger Mountain” (198?) which ran on TCM underground last night and already it is completely insane.
Full frontal (e rect!!!) male nudity too!!!
AND Pretty strong sexual content.
THANKS TCM!!!!
apparently the word “e rect” is censored.
EDIT: This is the dirtiest film I have ever seen on TCM. I love it! I’ve never ever heard the euphemism “box lunch” before, but I am absolutely using it daily from now on.

DAMN! Tried to find a clip of that iconic Hendrix work "1983(a merman I should turn to be)" from Electric Ladyland, but all YouTube had was a bunch of pretentious and crappy "covers" by presumptuous "musicians".

how's this instead? (apologies for any ads that may play before the clip)

[SPIDER BABY] was filmed in 1964 and remained on the shelf for 4 years since the producers went bankrupt.
[LON] Chaney [JR.] gives one of his best performances ever. Although it was a bizarre low budget film, the role was better than most of the ones he was offered at the time. So he remained on his best behavior, remaining on the wagon for the whole shoot.
agreed, although it's worth saying that CHANEY JR. gave a lot of excellent performances- and not just LENNY and LAWRENCE TALBOT- he is about the only thing I like in HIGH NOON.
ps- and even when he is not quite right in or for the part (hello, SON OF DRACULA), you can't dislike him or get too mad about it.

Well, it's about time!
As a nearly woke person, I say this outrageous example of "cultural appropriation"-- remember here, Sid Grauman nor ANYONE he commissioned at the the architectual firm of Meyer & Holler that designed it, had even an OUNCE of Asian let alone CHINESE blood coursing through his veins -- should have been torn down YEARS ago!!!
Uh-huh, and so I say they build the world's largest Starbucks coffee house there instead.
(...there can never be too many of those, ya know)
aka, a company that FOR YEARS has profited off the image of a MERMAID on their packaging WHILE AT THE SAME TIME EMPLOYING EXACTLY 0 ACTUAL INDIGENOUS PERSONS OF THE SEA OR TRANSPECIES INDIVIDUALS.

I came up with nothing on a Google search for this, there’s a chance they’re looking to rezone in the area so they could add apartments around the theater or tear down other structures around the theater, but I seriously doubt they would be able to tear down the theater. It’s still a major tourist attraction in the area.

Hoo-boy.
So, I finished SPIDER BABY (1964?7?8?)

I'll be upfront and admit that I watched about 30 minutes last night, turned it off to let it sink in, and watched the rest of it this morning.
The only legit critique I will lob at SPIDER BABY is that, CLEARLY, this is a UNIQUE story and FILM, and clearly the director spent a lot of time with the actors (whatever other shortcomings the movie has, the acting (and costuming) is, frankly, excellent, and not just for a BAD MOVIE, for any movie)- but it's not shot or edited or lit (or even directed) in an equally unconventional manner, like the story merits. there need to be LONG SHADOWS and CLOSE UPS and CANTED ANGLES and UNUSUAL SET-UPS, this this is all mid-level close-ups with few edits, it's put together with about as much visual flare as a LASSIE episode.
Again, LON CHANEY JR. stunned me, I have no idea how or why, but for some reason he dug deep and knocks his role out of the park.
I am bemused by the fact that one of the questions in the IMDB FAQ for SPIDER BABY is "WHAT TITLE WAS THIS MOVIE RELEASED UNDER IN INDIA?"
I am equally bemused by the notion of a full cinema in MUMBAI circa 1968, starring GAPE-MOUTHED at this thing on the big screen and wondering if AMERICA was like this.

LON CHANEY JR is absolutely outstanding though! It may be the legit greatest performance I’ve ever seen in a (I’ll be generous and say) B-Movie.
Damn Lon- go on, bring some Oscar-level game to this tawdry little project If for no other reason than to show you still can.

Sorry. Some mornings I wake up and just have to have a Negative Nancy moment.

I apologize If my two cents just now comes off as harsh or not in the right place, but I just gotta drop em on the counter:
This was the most poorly curated October schedule I can remember in as long as I’ve been watching TCM.
Just as a classic horror fan, the disappointment I found in not only seeing half the usual slate of movies, but seeing them peppered across the month with VERY LITTLE thought to a theme was disconcerting.
Besides that, TCM underground continues to disappoint and I am still not happy about that print of White Zombie....Also really, the BFI restored “horror of Dracula “several years ago and found new footage, why the hell would you not show that version TCM?
I know they think they can be the criterion channel, but in the end “new wingding font TCM“ is just coming off like a mix tape your friend who has way too scattered taste in music makes for you...
...and CHARTEUSE is a hideous color.

Best drama series is up next.
Murder She Wrote,
ANGELA LANSBURY of course lost the BEST ACTRESS IN A DRAMA EMMY 13 TIMES, I remember watching the last year she was nominated and hoping for her, but no...
although...
i kinda understand it though as, for some reason, they never really gave her a STRONG SUBMISSION EPISODE where she got to show ANY kind of RANGE (not counting her BRITISH COUSIN episodes because those are kinda eh)
So, I get it.
of course, to this day MURDER SHE WROTE reruns on multiple outlets and still stirs discussion and fandom,
CAGNEY AND LACEY notsomuch....

Tangentially related,( and not wanting to start my third topic complaining about the quality of a print), but it’s worth noting somewhere that the print of CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN TCM aired has A LOT OF SCRATCHES, LINES and DUST on it, certain scenes a worse than others (To the point where It is distracting)
edit- the color is also very washed out.
I thought this got a BFI restoration not too long ago, am I wrong?
