Vincent, Peter - Roddy McDowall in FRIGHT NIGHT

LOL! I'm still not sure why things kicked into overdrive the last couple of days. I'm planning on posting the 1958 1001 movie list, then my 1959 picks, late tonight. I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow, so I won't be posting anything till the afternoon. I figure we can let any 1958 stragglers post this evening, then everyone can post their 1959 lists tomorrow, then anyone who wants to do end-of-the-decade lists. We can start the 1960's Saturday.

Top, great pic from THE FLY. I haven't seen ELEVATOR TO THE GALLOWS, but I want to. CARVE HER NAME WITH PRIDE I haven't seen, but it's shown often on either the GETTV or THIS channel. That's another one with early Michael Caine. I also haven't seen LE BEAU SERGE, GOD'S LITTLE ACRE, THE GODDESS, THE HIGH COST OF LIVING,THE MATCHMAKER, and THE NAKED & THE DEAD.
-
Kingrat- I haven't watched that version of THE QUIET AMERICAN yet, though I have a copy waiting. I did see the remake with Michael Caine, who incidentally had an early uncredited background role in THE KEY. I don't know anything about ORDERS TO KILL, INNOCENT SINNERS, or HOME BEFORE DARK. Film lover, I still haven't seen A NIGHT TO REMEMBER, THE RELUCTANT DEBUTANTE, PARTY GIRL, or DAMN YANKEES.
-
Kingrat- I haven't seen ABANDON SHIP, SOMETHING OF VALUE, THE STORY OF ESTHER COSTELLO, or BOY ON A DOLPHIN. I just "enjoyed" SEA WIFE for the first time recently. I was never a big admirer of Collins' look, but she was a knockout in that one.

Bogie, you should seek out CAIRO STATION. I saw it for the 1001 list, and it was very good. I taped it off of TCM last year sometime. I haven't seen THE HORSE'S MOUTH, ICE COLD IN ALEX (this one is on the 101 Best War Films list), or WE ARE THE LAMBETH BOYS.

I actually liked ISHTAR. Not one of my favorites, but not the horrifying turkey it's usually made out to be. It works as a small, minor comedy with no exceptional expectations. The problems came from the absurd budget overruns and the egotism of the two stars that had gotten out of hand by the mid-80's. If it wasn't for the cost and the subsequent tabloid schadenfreude, ISHTAR would have been released to middling reviews and box office, and quickly disappeared, as opposed to taking the crown from HEAVEN'S GATE as the pre-imminent example of Hollywood excess and failure. My two cents, anyway.

One review for your "Shark Sandwich" album was just two words long: "**** sandwich".

Mr6666- I have that film on one of those 50-film public domain box sets. The print was awful, but the movie was somewhat enjoyable. -
There's such a fine line between clever and stupid.

1958 - 105 films seen 1. THE HIDDEN FORTRESS 2. HORROR OF DRACULA 3. TOUCH OF EVIL 4. THE VIKINGS 5. THE BLOB 6. THE YOUNG LIONS 7. THE SEVENTH VOYAGE OF SINBAD 8. VERTIGO 9. MON ONCLE 10. THE FLY Runner-ups: ASHES AND DIAMONDS, CAIRO STATION, I MARRIED A MONSTER FROM OUTER SPACE, JALSAGHAR: THE MUSIC ROOM, and SEPARATE TABLES. I have to comment that this was my toughest year to rank. There isn't a single film from this year that I've ranked higher than an 8/10, or B+. I like all of these choices, but none are anywhere near my all-time list. Larry's Choice: tie! 1) THE BRIDE AND THE BEAST - A newlywed finds herself strangely more attracted to her husband's captive gorilla than to her husband. As weird, perverted, and enjoyable as it sounds. 2) SHE-DEMONS - It's those darn Nazis again (won't they ever learn?), this time conducting experiments on helpless female captives on a tropical island. Starring Irish McCalla.

HITS & MISSES: Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow on TCM

STRAIGHT TIME (1978) Jan. 8/9 @ 2:00 A.M. Part of the "Ex-Cons" theme for the night, this underrated crime drama is fantastic. Dustin Hoffman stars as a parolee trying to stay on the straight and narrow, but elements in his life try to derail his plans. Hoffman is terrific, and there's great supporting roles for Harry Dean Stanton, M. Emmet Walsh, Gary Busey, and even a very young Kathy Bates. Theresa Russell is the main co-star, and she was never more beautiful in a romantic plot that seems real and unsentimental. For some reason this film is largely forgotten now, but it should be seen by anyone with an interest in crime dramas, Hoffman, or 70's cinema in general. Highly recommended. -
Swithin, I love it! FROM HELL IT CAME is priceless. I haven't seen SHE DEVIL, but I'm greatly intrigued. I also haven't seen ALL MINE TO GIVE. I can see from various comments from everyone about Kubrick that we may disagree on his future films. I like them partially because of their detachment. To me, everything he made from STRANGELOVE on was a horror film, most not in the conventional sense, but spiritually dead, and intentionally so, as a reflection of his thoughts on the world and the human condition in general (something that I share in my darker moments).

THE GIANT CLAW is the best colossal killer vulture movie with Jeff Morrow released in 1957, hands down.

Film lover, you mentioned NIGHT OF THE DEMON! That would have been #6 on my runner-ups. I really enjoy that one, with or without the shots of the demon. I haven't seen FUNNY FACE, but I know of it.
