  1. BRAZIL (1985) had some pretty outrageous plastic surgery, with Katherine Helmond's face manually being stretched tighter and tighter by future Oscar winner Jim Broadbent as her gleeful doctor.

ESCAPE FROM L.A. (1996) had a sequence where the hero was captured by a group of plastic surgery obsessed crazies led by an unrecognizable Bruce Campbell. It was John Carpenter's commentary on image obsession in Los Angeles.

  2. SECONDS is terrific. For a more horrific plastic surgery film, I like EYES WITHOUT A FACE (1959). Sometimes grisly, it was very influential on European horror and served as the basis for Pedro Almodovar's film THE SKIN I LIVE IN (2011), which takes the plastic surgery up a notch.

  3. In this thread I would like to share and compare lists of your personal top ten movies, going year by year. I will start with 1930, and add a new year every day or so. Please feel free to share your own, and any comments, suggestions and complaints about each other's choices are expected and encouraged. I like to read other's lists as sources of titles to look for in the future, and seeing other people's idiosyncratic choices can be amusing. My only request is if you personally don't like top ten lists, think they are stupid, a waste of time, been done to death, etc., please just move along to some other thread.

I will start by stating the year, how many titles from that year I've seen (yes, I have a list), and then the top ten. If I have any comments, I'll add them at the end. I start at 1930 simply for the reason that I haven't seen enough titles from the 20's or earlier to merit a list. Also, I know to expect some inconsistencies with what year to ascribe each film to. I try to use the imdb listed year, but everyone has they're own methodology. So, without further ado...

    1930 - 37 films seen

    1. ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT

    2. L'AGE D'OR

    3. ANIMAL CRACKERS

    4. THE BLUE ANGEL

    5. UP THE RIVER

    6. UNDER THE ROOFS OF PARIS

    7. THE DIVORCEE

    8. MOROCCO

    9. EARTH

  4. I don't recall maggots blowing in through a window. I only remember them in Dr. Freudstein's stomach.  Bava is another Italian horror film maker. It would be great if TCM presented a comprehensive series of films by Fulci, Bava, Argento and others. Speaking of my shrieking while watching horror films, I think my biggest shriek came during Cannibal Holocaust, another Italian horror film (directed by Deodato). What they did to that giant turtle!

CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST and CANNIBAL FEROX are two films I haven't seen, but will soon. They are about the only two famous/infamous horror films I haven't seen, so let's see if they merit their respective reputations.

  5. I saw it at the movies back in the early '80s and shrieked with the rest of the audience when Dr. Freudstein and his maggots appeared.

Is THIS the movie where there is a shower of maggots blowing in through a window?

I have a friend who loves horror who had a group of us over to watch some "rare Italian" horror film. I laughed out loud at that scene yelling, "Just close the window!"

I have always identified that as "some weird Mario Bava" film. Was I mistaken? Is it HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY?

SUSPIRIA (1977) was an Italian horror film from Dario Argento that featured maggots raining down from the ceiling in a girls dance school.
