  1. I'm going to keep this open tonight through tomorrow morning for anyone to finish up or catch up.

I'll start the best of all time list around 1:00 P.M. EST tomorrow, and leave it open until 1 the following afternoon.

  2. I mentioned Sylvester Stallone as giving a notable performance in 2015. Think he'll probably get a supporting Oscar for it.

As for lead, as much as Di Caprio is being pushed for Best Actor, I have a strange feeling Damon will walk away with the statuette.

Would very much like to see Cate Blanchett and Jennifer Jason Leigh take the two main women's categories.

Can you believe the Oscars are a month from tomorrow...?

Despite all of the controversy, I'm actually looking forward to this Oscar telecast more so than the last several years, simply for the reason that I don't know who will win. Ever since the media coverage of all the various award ceremonies increased, by the time the Oscars came around, it was foregone who would win. Not so this year.

  3. Here are the 1001 Movies to See Before You Die entries for 2014:

    BIRDMAN

    BOYHOOD

    CITIZENFOUR

    THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL

    GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

    IDA

    LEVIATHAN

    THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING

    UNDER THE SKIN

    WHIPLASH

    I've seen none of them.

  4. We'll do 2015 after kingrat weighs in on 2014, then we can post best of half-decade lists tonight.

No offense meant to SansFin, Speedracer, LiamCasey, and any of our other posters, but I'm never sure when they are participating, and they seem to keep sporadic hours. Please join in, if and when you can!

  5. We'll do 2015 after kingrat weighs in on 2014, then we can post best of half-decade lists tonight. Tomorrow we'll reserve the whole day and night for all-time lists, since some of our contributors who've dropped off may return for that. Then Friday we can do the silent & 29 lists.

    After that...?

  6. After the 2015 lists, and then the best of the 2010's so far lists, we'll do the all-time best.

Afterward, I'll do a 20 best from the dawn of cinema to 1928; if I'm doing a single list covering a 28 year period, I want more than 10. If you only want 10, that's fine. I'll then do a best of '29 list separately, since it's mainly sound, but that may be less than 10.

    Does that sound reasonable enough?

  7. Had we gone a little slower, the years would have advanced before we reached them, which would have been good! And btw, what are silent films -- chopped liver (or is that merely a NY expression)?

Swithin, you hit on something I was considering yesterday. How does everyone feel about doing a top ten silents list before or after we do our top all-time list?

  8. Thanks for this, but for those of you who have not yet seen the film I would advise Not to read it.  It gives away too many of the twists in each of the stories.

Not to worry. I've learned from decades of reading film and television related articles, that when it's something you haven't seen, Read the first paragraph, and maybe the last carefully.

  9. The Aviator also featured Jude Law as Errol Flynn, and Gwen Stefani as Jean Harlow

The Rat Pack (1998) had Ray Liotta as Frank Sinatra, Joe Mantegna as Dean Martin, Don Cheadle as Sammy Davis, Deborah Kara Unger as Ava Gardner

Poppy Montgomery, Ashley Judd, and Mira Sorvino have all played Marilyn Monroe.

Chaplin (1992) had Robert Downey Jr as Charles Chaplin, Marisa Tomei as Mabel Normand, Penelope Ann Miller as Edna Purviance, Kevin Kline as Douglas Fairbanks, Maria Pitillo as Mary Pickford, and Diane Lane as Paulette Goddard,
