AMERICAN BEAUTY - I had mixed feelings about this very well-made film. Borrows from SUNSET BLVD. for the voiceover. Annette Bening gets another award like the one I gave Billy Zane: I hated the cartoonish way the director wanted her to play her character, but she faithfully and capably executed this unfortunate approach. I liked the offbeat nature of the film, especially as the trend was toward formula, but hated the assumption that of course a career military guy was a repressed homosexual and of course he collected Nazi paraphernalia.
I agree with this a lot. The last time I watched it, I was surprised at how much it has aged already, and how heavy-handed so much of it is. I still like it enough to put it in my top ten, though.

That's great you're watching the Universal horrors. As you can guess, I love them, even the corniest ones are a lot of fun.Another quirk to my hobby of watching films is to do so in themes - when I am home in Canada that is. The Limey is scheduled but I haven't hit its group as yet. At the moment I am revisiting Universal horror movies and the like. You turn around and it's been 15 years since you've last seem them.
I liked Fight Club and want to revisit it. Fincher is an interesting director.
I don't recall a substantial increase in nudity in EYES WIDE SHUT. I'll do some research and see what's different. FIGHT CLUB has a lot of detractors, but it was one of the last times I came out of the theater truly stunned by a movie. I think that's maybe happened once in the 17 years since. Subsequently, Fincher is among my favorite youngish directors, along with the Andersons (P.T. and Wes), Christopher Nolan, and Darren Aronofsky.

Bogie,I liked it. If I had done a top 20, it would be on the list. I've only watched it maybe 3 times, but I find I like it more each time. At the time of it's release, I got into a fair share of arguments with friends who hated it and expected me to defend it, since I was the only one to say they liked it at all.
I have the unrated blu ray, but couldn't tell you what was different from what I'd seen before.
Unlike the last few years, I thought 1999 was a good year. Beyond what I put in my list, and EYES WIDE SHUT, I could have added THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY, TUMBLEWEEDS, MAN ON THE MOON, AUDITION, BEING JOHN MALKOVICH, BOYS DON'T CRY, THE CIDER HOUSE RULES, DICK, DOGMA, EXISTENZ, FLAWLESS, GIRL INTERRUPTED, THE IRON GIANT, MYSTERY MEN, THE NINTH GATE, OCTOBER SKY, SLEEPY HOLLOW, SOUTH PARK, THE STRAIGHT STORY, SUMMER OF SAM, SWEET AND LOWDOWN, ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER, and ATTACK THE GAS STATION.
I'm surprised you missed THE LIMEY. Any specific reason?
What did you think of FIGHT CLUB?

Bogie, I haven't seen The Color of Paradise, Topsy-Turvy, East is East, or Time Regained.
Wild Zero is a very strange Japanese horror/comedy/musical, starring a real Japanese band as themselves (they're described as the Japanese equivalent of the Ramones). On the way to a gig, they have to fight aliens and zombies. It was almost my Larry's Choice pick, but I decided I actually liked it for the right reasons more than the wrong.

The Thing (1982) - Are the survivors rescued? Is the creature really dead? Is one of the survivors actually the creature?...

Late tomorrow night, January 23 2:00 A.M. EST on TCM Underground:
1989's The Church

Italian made but shot in English, with a script co-written by Dario Argento, and also co-written and directed by Argento protege Michele Soavi.
When some unsuspecting people unearth an ancient secret evil from beneath an old cathedral, all hell breaks loose!
Starring Hugh Quarshie, Tomas Arana, and featuring an early role for Asia Argento.
This isn't the best Italo-horror from the period, but it's not bad, and definitely recommended for fans of the genre.
With music from Argento regulars Goblin, as well as Keith Emerson from Emerson, Lake and Palmer.

I enjoy it, as well. Some critics have called it the best Hammer film, but I don't know if I'd go that far. Christopher Lee also named it as his favorite film he did for them (yes, even over all the Draculas).
I found it best viewed tongue-in-cheek, and it's a lot of fun.
Recommended x 3!
