Did you miss his turn in "Alex Cross" (2012) as the James Patterson-created police psychologist originally played by Morgan Freeman in the 1990s films "Kiss the Girls" and "Along Came a Spider"?
I heard both he and that film were rubbish. I haven't seen it to make my own critique.

A friend who had seen more of his work felt that Lee still hadn't grown out of the "I've been to film school!" shots.
Sounds about right!

But sometimes I admire him for that. Whether or not it's truly the reason, it comes across that he still has the fire of a younger man.

I'll post the 89 1001 movies after 8 est, then we can do best of the 80's lists.

Do the Right Thing is on my rather long runner up list. My 1986 through 1989 extended runners up lists are long as they consist of films that I would consider recommending to film buffs. I have to say that I do find some of Spike Lee's films to be a bit 'affected' if you know what I mean. There are a few that are downright dreadful. Corny and full of racial stereotypes.
I have a few Beat Takeshi's waiting to be seen. I should look out for Violent Cop.
I get your meaning on Spike Lee. Some of his movies are rather eyeroll worthy. But I felt DO THE RIGHT THING was a unique and vibrant look at one of America's thorniest issues. I think I have one more Spike movie on my lists.
sex, lies and videotapes is one I should rewatch. It seemed like a lot of pretentious navel-gazing when I saw it after its home video release, although is had tons of critical praise at the time. I think I may have been victim to overhype.
I have a couple more Takeshi films on my upcoming lists.

LawrenceA--A question: Do "restored" films (I"m thinking of the 1990 restoration of 1940's "Fantasia) count as new releases? Can we include them in our top ten?
You can put whatever you want...there's no rules.

THIS IS ELVIS - (7/10) - Odd look at the life of Elvis Presley is comprised of re-enactments and actor voiceovers (bad) and actual footage of Elvis from film and television, some of it rare (good). Does an adequate job of telling his life story, although it's very fan-friendly and not very critical. If you can put aside the tacky nature of some of it, there's some good music and good memories to be relived here.

I always liked LAST CRUSADE. Never quite got the complaints over that one.
I never have seen VALMONT or THE COOK...

Glenn Frey, singer-songwriter and member of hugely successful band the Eagles, has died. Among their hits, he wrote "Lyin'Eyes", "Tequila Sunrise", and "Heartache Tonight".
He went solo in the 80's and had hits with "Smuggler's Blues" and "The Heat is On", among others. He ventured into acting as well, with roles in tv's MIAMI VICE and WISEGUY, as well as films such as JERRY MAGUIRE.
Glenn Frey was 67.

Bogie, I haven't seen SCANDAL, ROMERO, POWWOW HIGHWAY, GANASHATRU, or LIFE AND NOTHING BUT. I know the first three, but not the last two.
What are your thoughts on DO THE RIGHT THING? Don't pull your punches. I ask because I noticed despite our similar tastes, we failed to put each other's #1 choice on our lists at all.
I also highly recommend VIOLENT COP. It was the film that introduced the new tough guy persona of Takeshi Kitano, who had previously been known as a stand up comic and game show host. It's very different from most crime dramas, as are most of Kitano's.
-
Probably Denys Arcand's most perfectly made picture. We studied it in film school. The lead actor (Lothaire Bluteau) is phenomenal.
I've seen Bluteau in several tv things, and always thought he had an interesting presence.
I ordered THE DECLINE OF THE AMERICAN EMPIRE the other day after some of you recommended it so highly.

THEY CALL HER...CLEOPATRA WONG - (7/10) - Filipino action extravaganza that is a bad film lover's delight. Our title heroine is a karate-fighting, gun-blazing, gorgeous lady James Bond-type working for Interpol. She's sent to investigate a counterfeiting ring that takes her from the Philippines to Singapore to Hong Kong. She has to battle scores of evildoers, including gun-toting thugs, overweight middle-aged wrestlers hanging out in some guy's yard in their underwear, a school of karate students stored in the same guy's den, phony priests with hilariously bad dubbed Irish accents, and more! Featuring amazing cars, fashions, mopeds, physics-defying jumps, and all the bad dialogue one could ask for. Sample line when our hero is led into a criminal's lair:
"Welcome to my villar, Miss Wong!"

no doubt because the studio suits figured Americans would be scratching their heads over the word "communion".
Or perhaps they would go in expecting Christopher Walken getting probed by aliens.

I'm rather surprised they haven't used Brainiac yet. Even if they find the original green-skinned alien too corny, they could use the big chrome robot version from the 1980's.
