**denotes films I have not seen

  2. STRANGE BEHAVIOR - (6/10) - a.k.a. DEAD KIDS. A series of strange disappearances and murders start occurring in a small rural Illinois town. The sheriff and his teenage son separately set out to solve the mystery. Could it have something to do with the mind experiments being conducted at the nearby college? Michael Murphy stars, with Dan Shor from WISE BLOOD, Louise Fletcher, Fiona Lewis, Dey Young, Marc McClure, and classic movie guys Scott Brady and Charles Lane. Despite the cast and setting, this was filmed in New Zealand. Bill Condon wrote the screenplay. You could do worse, and there's a couple of memorable moments. Someone wears a Tor Johnson mask at one point.

  3. Before moving on, I want to ask if any of you learned folks have seen any of those 1982 1001 Movies I haven't seen, and if so, any thoughts or feelings about them. They were A QUESTION OF SILENCE, TOO EARLY TOO LATE, and YOL. The other two were discussed already.

  4. Kingrat, I haven't seen ENTRE NOUS.

One reason it took nearly 4 years between OFFICER and TOP GUN was that the Air Force and the Pentagon had final say-so on the script to make sure they looked the best. The filmmakers needed the cooperation to secure the use of bases and hardware.

I know too much about a film I don't even like.

  5. SHOCK TREATMENT - (6/10) - Sequel to ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW was a big letdown to fans and quickly disappeared, but it's not all bad. Brad and Janet return from the first film, and this time they're contestants on a strange reality show/gameshow. There's some clever commentary on celebrity, and some prescient bits with product placement. Richard O'Brien, Patricia Quinn, Nell Campbell, and Charles Gray return from the earlier film, but as different characters this time. However, Brad and Janet have been recast with Cliff DeYoung and Jessica Harper, respectively. Also appearing are Ruby Wax, Rik Mayall, and the real standout in the film, Barry Humphries as the gameshow host. Some of the songs are good, while others fail to click, but the real failing of the film is the lack of Frank-N-Furter, or a performer with Tim Curry's talent and charisma.

  6. A few comments on my Larry's Choice picks: Arguably the most influential movies in the world of 80's b-movies were MAD MAX and THE ROAD WARRIOR. There were scores of post-apocalyptic films released during the decade, with great titles like WARRIORS OF THE WASTELAND, EXTERMINATORS IN THE YEAR 3000, 1990: BRONX WARRIORS, AFTER THE FALL OF NEW YORK, WARRIOR OF THE LOST WORLD, and WARLORDS OF THE 21st CENTURY. Not all were Earth-bound, with a fair number being set on alien worlds that just happened to look like MAD MAX's desert outback. METALSTORM, one of my choices, fits in this category, and is typical of the genre.

W IS WAR is a Filipino variation. Set in basically modern times, a cop must battle an evil gang from out of town. The gang looks like it just stepped out of THE ROAD WARRIOR, but much sillier. Good luck finding this one: I found it about a decade ago, in a box of coverless, unmarked vhs tapes. After sharing with friends, it got lost somewhere along the way.

  7. Swithin, I haven't seen PAULINE AT THE BEACH or THE RETURN OF MARTIN GUERRE.

film lover, I had trouble seeing STREAMERS for a long time, until finally one of those cable channels (IFC? Sundance?) started showing it a couple of years ago. It is worth checking out.

I recall that when THE DAY AFTER aired on television, nearby tv news teams came to my town to interview elementary school children about their thoughts on it, which just fed their nuclear war hysteria even more.

  8. Bogie, nice list. All of yours that I have seen are films that I liked as well. I haven't seen THE MAKIOKA SISTERS, THE FOURTH MAN, and CARMEN.

THE KEEP was a flop horror film, directed (and now virtually disowned) by Michael Mann. Set during WWII, a group of German soldiers occupy an old castle in Eastern Europe and unleash an ancient supernatural evil. The way the creature is depicted, and the terrific score by Tangerine Dream, are the main allures. Scott Glenn, Ian McKellen, Jurgen Prochnow, and Gabriel Byrne star. This movie infamously has never been released on disc, despite much pleading and petitioning, although it was available to stream on Amazon Prime.

LE DERNIER COMBAT is a b&w post-apocalyptic movie, directed by Luc Besson, with virtually no dialogue.

BRAINSTORM is a before-its-time movie about the development of a sensory recording device, and the various corporate and governmental obstacles. The movie itself got overshadowed by the death of Natalie Wood during the film's production. Christopher Walken, Louise Fletcher, and Cliff Robertson also appear.

  11. I remember reading that after An Officer & a Gentleman, Navy recruitment went through the roof. Top Gun was green-lit as the Air Force's recruitment ad after the earlier film's success.

I've never heard of Experience Preferred... either.

Eating Raoul was funny. I used to put it on my "Employee's Picks" shelf. Along with Koyaanisqatsi.

Diner never did anything for me.

Shoot the Moon is sitting on my shelf, waiting to be watched for the first time soon.

As for subject knowledge altering your enjoyment of a film, I've often heard that. I have friends and family that are lawyers, nurses, teachers, law enforcement, and they all say they can't or don't watch films in their field.

  12. SADOMANIA - (4/10) - Ultra-sleazy women-in-prison trash from the fetid mind of Jess Franco. A women's prison in a remote region of Spain is ruled by an evil, sadistic warden, who sells the inmates to the highest bidder for their carnal pleasure, or for more murderous pursuits. Ajita Wilson, a transgender underground film star, plays the warden. Franco himself plays a white slaver, and Playboy playmate Ursula Buchfellner stars as an innocent young inmate. This is the kind of film where none of the characters, be they prisoners or guards, wear shirts.

  13. Swithin, Peter Greenaway is another director whose works I've been unable to see. It's been frustrating, since so many are listed in my various "to-see" books. I don't know LA NUIT DE VARENNES. I also haven't seen VERONIKA VOSS or THE WEAVERS.

Like SWAMP THING, I just bought Q on blu ray, and will be rewatching it soon.
