  1. film lover, I've seen all of your choices this time!

Bogie, I haven't seen TexInterrogation, Fitzcarraldo, Burden of Dreams or Moonlighting.

You both have Koyaanisqatsi, but I have it listed with 1983, since it only played 2 film festivals in '82.

  4. SansFin, that 1982 list may be the most amazing thing I've seen all day. SWAMP THING! JEKYLL AND HYDE...TOGETHER AGAIN!! FEROCIOUS FEMALE FREDDOM FIGHTERS!!!

    I love it!

Just to clarify, I actually do like these movies. I wasn't being dismissive. In fact, I recently bought the blu ray of SWAMP THING, and will be watching it soon.

  5. THE ROLLING STONES: LET'S SPEND THE NIGHT TOGETHER - (7/10) - Concert film of the rock stars performing 25 songs, recorded primarily at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Arizona in December of 1981. The giant open-air venue threatens to overwhelm the band, even on film, and the grandiose stage design doesn't help. But the band sounds good, and Mick Jagger is in top strutting form. Directed by Hal Ashby, who was suffering from serious medical issues at the time. He occasionally throws in some backstage footage, or scenes of stage construction, but never for very long, keeping the action mainly on the band.

  6. Yes, I remember a big resurgence in the Red Menace type of hysteria after Reagan was in office. REDS came out when that was really ramping up again.

I still have a hard time with BROKEBACK losing to CRASH. I'm not one of the CRASH haters that have declared it the worst best picture winner ever, but BROKEBACK really should have won. That being said, neither of those films top my 2005 list. But that's a discussion for later.

  7. I think Hudson wasn't well-known enough to win. That probably tipped the scale to Beatty. REDS wasn't doing that well at the box office, which I think is why it didn't win best picture. Had Hudson been well known, he would probably have won. People thought of ON GOLDEN POND as essentially a filmed play (correct) and felt that the acting awards were enough. ATLANTIC CITY was more of a critics' darling than a popular movie, and RAIDERS didn't get the critical respect then than it would now.

I agree on RAIDERS. It was my #1 pick, after all. I believe the sequence with Indy hanging off the hood of the speeding truck followed by the fight around the fueling airplane is the greatest action sequence in film history. Expertly directed and edited.

  8. Nicoley, an eloquent and loving tribute to Alan Rickman, the actor and the man. Your reference to his voice reminds me that he infused Marvin, the morbidly depressed droid in The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy (2005), with a humanity that might have been too subtle for a different actor. I'm wondering if anyone has had an opportunity to see A Little Chaos (2014), which he directed and in which he appeared as Louis XIV opposite Kate Winslet and Matthais Schoenaerts?

I haven't watched it yet, but I recorded A LITTLE CHAOS a couple of days before his death.

    :(

  9. Svengoolie is a throwback to the old local creature feature tv hosts. He introduces old horror and sci-fi films with bad jokes and comedy bits. His show is carried nationally at 10:00 P.M. EST on the METV network, which is a syndicated cable channel. Check your local listings!
