He stands out. Plus, he's completely convincing in everything he's in. Plus, a lot of his movies are kind of fun to watch. Even *White Heat*, which some would argue is "darK' or violent, is entertaining as hell. (just check out the ending - hellfire on earth.) > > Most of all, Cagney absolutely crackles with energy. Even when he's just staying still, he's kind of simmering with some kind of Cagneyesque life force. > I think at least one person mentioned him in that awful Big Time actors you don't care for thread.
  2. thomasterryjr--why would you dislike McQueen et al because of how producers & studios chose to handle minorities? Not their fault--they wanted to be in entertainment & thses were the roles they were offered. It's not like they had much power. Blame the studios, or a misguided society, but not the actors.
  3. But if they do new ones with living people then we'll see more of the type Julianne Moore does for Myrna Loy, which doesn't sound very sincere. That's not a knock against Moore, whom I like, but at least most of the tributes are done by people who knew the star. BTW, the one that grates the most is Nigel Lythgoe's tribute to Ginger Rogers--probably because I don't care for either Lythgoe or Rogers.
  4. He's my favorite as well. I think you'll like Footlight Parade. It's a hoot.
  5. > {quote:title=JakeHolman wrote:}{quote}John Wayne is the only Golden Age Actor who is still poplular with America in every poll > conducted. No other poser comes close and in fact never makes the top ten... > > Jake in the Heartland I think that's because his reputation as an ultra patriot & not necessarily because of his acting skills. I'll admit that I do like some of his films, in fact he's very good in quite a few.
  6. Dargo--I was thinking the same thing you posted re: Wilder, Taylor & the whole HUAC thing, but didn't want to open that subject for discussion yet again. It would have been more believable with Taylor as Linus. I never bought the "romance" between Bogart & Hepburn.
  7. Dobbs-for someone who seems to watch (and post about) TCM 24/7/365, how do you keep missing films that they've shown? I know the 34 version of The Man Who Knew Too Much has been on a few times in the last couple of years, and I'm pretty positive Sabotage has been on sometime this year. I'll concede on the others, although The 39 Steps is on Encore fairly regularly.
  8. Ooh I like the idea of Taylor in Sabrina. Too bad no one thought about it at the time. However I like Robert a lot (guess I'm in the minority here) & I think he was good in Devil's Doorway & Westward the Women.
  9. Well, whoever wanted The Saint films shown is going to be happy, unless Saturday morning doesn't suit them.
  10. Too bad you couldn't get my choices, Mel Brooks & Carl Reiner. That would have been epic. Any idea about films scheduled? Besides the obligatory Hitchcock. Surprise us this time with some rare ones.
  11. Kiki was on when they showed a day of Colman films--maybe last year during SUTS. For me, Talmadge was just too much. I'll let you form your own opinion.
  12. I know I normally don't comment regarding you obsession with Garbo & Crawford, but your post really has nothing to do with the question Triple HHH asked.
  13. This was posted on IMDB's message board too. How could you get through all the verbosity to understand what the hell the guy was saying? I was snoozing after the 1st paragraph. Apparently this guy thrives on controversy (although I'd never heard of him, others had.)
  14. Probably somewhere between four or five thousand.
  15. I have a feeling that you have been contacted by someone at TCM & now you're just jerking everyone around. Not a very nice thing to do, in my opinion.
  16. You are becoming quite redundant. Why, if these explanations are unsatisfactory, continuing to waste time reiterating your stance when you could be working on your letter to TCM? Or are you going to continue ignoring my suggestion?
  17. Sorry for the typos, let me try again. Darn tablet. Send a registered letter to them requiring a signature & I'll bet you will get a reply.
  18. > {quote:title=Hoosier205 wrote:}{quote}Who here hates TCM? Who exactly? I certainly don't. I am certainly not a TCM apologist either, as some are. Let's dial up the highlights: > > * TCM HD broadcasts nothing in HD. > * Up-converting content does not make it HD. > * TCM HD has had two years to get their act together and has not bothered to do so. > For a channel that prides itself for doing so much good for the sake of film (and they certainly do), their treatment of their HD channel is a disgrace. I've beenreading this thread & it seems to me all questions you have have been answered, but none of us work there & the mod probably doesn't have the answers either. I suggest you write & old fashioned letter, send it registered with a required signatured, and you will probably get a response.
  19. TCMfan just posted a couple of times yesterday. You give this so called clique too much power. I find that people who don't like TCM or just like to act provocatively by stirring the pot only stay around until people get bored with the "debates."
  20. Hoosier205 You forgot sycophants. That's my favorite epithet. Lol
  21. > {quote:title=Hoosier205 wrote:}{quote}The ability to contact them via this webite is extremely limited. Most attemts will simply be ignored. There system is setup to allow for that. You get the same thing if you call them...an answering service basically. If you think that the "Contact Us" fuction of this website is adequate...you must be on the payroll. No, I'm not on the payroll. I'm a retiree who lives in Alabama. Why not send a registered letter which requires a signature for delivery? Or would you rather be hostile to everyone who is responding? How can you expect anyone to take you seriously?
  22. Why do you say that you can't get in touch with TCM? There's a contact us link at the bottom of this page & if you're so inclined you can send them snail mail at Techwood Drive in ATL. I know someone who had a complaint in a podcast about one of the film prints & was invited for a tour of their studios. I had a complaint about the film lineup on the initial cruise & received a phone call from the cruise organizers & TCM. Believe it or not, TPTB care about this stuff.
  23. Sherman Helmsley died today as well. I didn't see the previous post. I apologize for my redundancy. Edited by: helenbaby on Jul 25, 2012 6:59 AM
  24. Nothing has been announced yet, but maybe after August. Plus she made most of his films at Fox so it may take some time. I'm not much help.
  25. Since you asked, yes. I don't have a problem with TCM showing films from any decade, but I just don't want to open a can of worms.
