  1. I just checked the schedule on here & on my TV and both say Sweet Smell of Success is on tomorrow at 8 EST. I think it's Guest Programmer night with Ron Perlman.
  2. Stupid double post. Edited by: helenbaby on Nov 20, 2011 8:39 AM
  3. jackfavell--I suspect he knew how to make the swimming drink but had to think really hard about it because it was such a minor detail that maybe he thought it would never come up. Or he was just really good at guessing what the "swimming drink" was. It was just one of those implausible details of the film, even though I enjoyed it very much. I can't answer your question about the basement scene, however the wife was incapacitated by TB for several months so maybe he was in anguish about that. I agree that Todd, as Marshall, was always very neatly dressed, even when playing ball in the church parking lot. And he always had that ramrod straight posture. Todd had an excellent physique--ROWR!!

  5. You may have figured it out. The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is also about unrequited love. A young couple are separated by his military obligation and that fact changes everything in the rest of the story. Sorry I don't recall the 4th movie either.
  6. > {quote:title=jamesjazzguitar wrote:}{quote} > > Second; does that type of advise make a difference OR is it just a marketing ploy? By 'make a difference'; e.g. would the ladies at the beautyshop or men at the barber NOT discuss the ending because of the advise from Fairbanks? The ending did surprise me but I found the Fairbanks speech strange. > Wasn't that a favorite marketing ploy of Alfred Hitchcock or others that made suspense films? Don't give away the plot and lessen your friends' fun. Of course, I had to go and spoil it by looking up the plot of the film elsewhere, because I don't mind spoilers. However, I have to say I watched the movie differently after I found out what was going on.
  7. If you like suspense, I hope you either watched or DVR'd *Chase a Crooked Shadow* last night. It was pretty good & I'd never heard of it before. Jeannette MacDonald? I don't care for her either, but I haven't noticed any of her films on TCM lately--I tend to ignore that she's on TV when they show her films. Fred Astaire? Haven't noticed his films being shown a lot lately either. There are gems to be found among the more frequently shown films. A lot of weekday films are rare B's & precodes, usually worth watching. Utilize your DVR or old VCR. A lot of films don't get shown because of rights issues. They (TCM) has to have the rights to show films and if they are tied up in litigation or are just difficult to find out who has the rights (ask our Canadian friends who post here) then those films can't be shown. Just because Netflix can rent it to you doesn't mean TCM has carte blanche to show whatever they (or you) want.
  8. > {quote:title=smileys wrote:}{quote}It's obvious from your posts the last few years that you despise everything about TCM, and more than likely don't even watch it. Why not stick to your favorite, Netflix streaming, and leave this website to people that actually enjoy TCM? As much as I agree with you, it looks like we are fighting a losing battle. People have left or have a minimal presence that used to be valuable members of this board.
  9. Just my opinion, but I've always thought that perhaps is was a test of some sort. Is Eliot the same type of person Charlotte is, someone who doesn't want to fit in the box of expected behavior, or is he more like her mother, to whom appearances mean everything and feelings don't matter? It probably never occurs to Eliot that Charlotte may not be satisfied to be step mom to his almost grown children, or that Charlotte wants to do things that upper crust Bostonians would never do. His responses, or lack of response, tells Charlotte that she shouldn't settle for such a person, even if he is a nice guy. It took her a long time to get out from under her mother's thumb. She wasn't willing to be put under another person's thumb, just for appearances sake.

  12. > {quote:title=clore wrote:}{quote}Did you notice how homely Norma was without her makeup on? > > She reminded me of Karen Black and that's not necessarily a good thing. Shearer has never done a thing for me. If I watch one of her films, it's only to add to the list of previously unseen titles. Putting that aside, do you enjoy Marie Dressler? Just curious.
  13. Well, what happened? We never got any alert today although I did hear one beep at around that time.
  14. In the vernacular of MarkBeckauf, I'm totally groovin' to Marie Dressler day. I even saw one of her films that I'd never seen, Let Us Be Gay. And I usually try to watch anything with her or Norma Shearer. I can not wait until Emma is on this afternoon, which is probably my favorite performance by her, although I think she adds to any film she made. Edited by: helenbaby on Nov 9, 2011 12:23 PM because spelling rulz.

However, I realize that I'm beating my head against the wall with such a request. It's just that it seems to me that it's futile to continue to berate TCM when all they're trying to do is entertain people. A couple of recent example are the complete blow up about the theme day of William Hopper films. There were some rarely seen B films, some with Ann Sheridan & Walter Brennan, actors people love, but because Hopper was in them some folks thought that a day devoted to him was unnecessary and he didn't deserve it. Well, why not? It was just a fun way to show films we hardly ever see and a way to put some attention on a guy a lot of people have forgotten about. During Summer Under the Stars there was a pages long diatribe against the day for Peter Lawford. Why did that happen? It was just someone different to focus on, but people object to his personal life so therefore he doesn't deserve a day of tribute. Never mind that there were some rarely seen films on that day as well. Sorry for the poor grammar. I liked Storm Center.
  16. > {quote:title=lzcutter wrote:}{quote}I got this email from TCM yesterday concerning the TCM Cruise and the All-Star line-up starting to take form: > > "A roster of Hollywood legends will be joining Robert Osborne and Ben Mankiewicz, including Ernest Borgnine, Tippi Hedren, Eva Marie Saint, Norman Jewison, and the Alloy Orchestra. Plus you'll be able to participate in TCM-themed events, screenings, panel discussions, trivia contests and parties." > > Sounds pretty wonderful, doesn't it? > > Look for more info on the TCM Cruise website. I've talked with Ms. Ferris and Heather from TCM (I think that was her name) because I expressed my disappointment in the films lined-up for the cruise. I was sent a more detailed breakdown and while I'm still not all that enthusiatic about the films (besides Orchestra Wives, the only one I'm actually looking forward to) there are going to be some interesting presentations, like the history of the Brown Derby & one on Christmas films. Mr. Borgnine is going to have Emperor of the North as his feature film, which is a surprise since he made more higher profile films. I know that film had some Oscar noms but I don't really know much about it. However, what blows my mind is that she stated there would be a presentation of The Poseidon Adventure with a Borgnine Q & A prior to the film. Why would they show that particular film on a cruise is beyond comprehension, unless it's an ironic joke. My main objective is to attend as many screenings as I can tolerate and try to kick butt at the trivia sessions. I'm getting a little more excited than I was a week ago.
  17. The only surprise I see is Adventures of Robinson Crusoe. Any others I may have missed?

I'm sorry that you take it so personally. > > But if TCM wants to be fair, then they should stop taking the moral high ground of claiming to be THE channel to offer films in their original format if they aren't going to deliver. It's called bait-and-switch in the advertising trade. I've even seen that letterboxing promo air right before a pan-and-scan print. > > > What if, every time someone complains about this, or if a host misspeaks & gives incorrect information, someone on here called you an **** retentive nitpicker? Not good, huh? > > > As long as I then get to call that someone an **** retentive apologist, then they can go ahead and do so. Sorry, as one who invests a lot of time on the channel, I've earned the right to comment. If this forum were only for the praising of TCM, it would become a very dull place and TCM can just then rest on its laurels. That's not good for anyone, complacency is a dangerous thing. > > > As my sixth grade teacher used to have on the chalk board for us all to see everyday: > > > "Good, better, best > Never let it rest > Till your good is better > And your better, best" > This forum has turned into a rage against the machine, while I'd think it would be better to address your concerns directly to the powers that be. I know exactly to whom you addressed your sly comment, and I guess you've noticed (or maybe not) that neither one of those people are posting in this forum anymore--who can blame them. If I was berated & insulted every time I tried to offer an explanation, I would quit too. In fact, I did quit posting for about 6 months because of all the negativity around here. I personally do not think TCM has any sinister motives. And taking the moral high ground? It's a damn TV station. You, and others of your ilk, have very high standards that I don't think anyone could achieve those standards.
  19. > {quote:title=clore wrote:}{quote} > Believe it or not, that was the excuse that one of the resident TCM apologists tried out on me once. I didn't buy it then and I don't buy it now. Stop running the letterbox promo if you're going to make exceptions. It gives the impression that we're always going to see films in their intended format. And if they can't get them in the proper format, don't schedule them. I'm sure it's not as if there was any great demand for today's Anthony Newley festival. Why did you have to go there? As one of the "resident apologists", I resent that because I don't really care whether, in some cases, a film is pan & scan that I'm put in a category of being an apologists or my favorite epithet that used to get tossed around here, sycophant. If I want to watch a film bad enough, I'll take what I can get. Just because someone offered an explanation for a problem, it must somehow be wrong, an apology or any other phrases that may come to mind. What if, every time someone complains about this, or if a host misspeaks & gives incorrect information, someone on here called you an **** retentive nitpicker? Not good, huh?
  20. > {quote:title=JonnyGeetar wrote:}{quote} > > {quote:title=lzcutter wrote:}{quote} > > Sounds like TCM just can't please everyone no matter what they do. > Yes, but one thing is always certain: they're going to please you no matter what. > > (your arms ever get tired from waving the pom-poms all the time?) I'll bet you're a hoot at parties. You just spread sunshine no matter where you go!
  21. Redgrave & Nero had a child together back then but never married until 6 or 7 years ago. Redgrave spent most of the 1980's living with Timothy Dalton. When Camelot was on Saturday, one of the pay movie channels (I think it was Starz) was showing Letters to Juliet with Redgrave & Nero as people who had been in love as youngsters and she was scared to defy her parents by marrying him. She runs off but not before she leaves a Letter for Juliet in a wall in Verona. Amanda Seyfried plays a young woman who finds the letter after 50 years (it was well hidden) and answers it as one of Juliet's secretaries. Redgrave & Nero were the best thing about the movie, and Nero is still as handsome as ever.

It's about Brent & Dvorak married to each other & Brent starts his own advertising agency. He hires Davis as his copywriter and gets involved with her. It's a good one IMO. I have to take exception to one of your previous posts, though. Miss Davis played plenty of "sane" characters. Some may be ruthless or some may be weak but not necessarily insane. You really need to see a lot more of her less famous movies.
  24. > {quote:title=JonnyGeetar wrote:}{quote} > > But the William Castle thing, UGH! His movies are GARBAGE. And it's not just Halloween. Straight Jacket and ZOTZ! (sic?) show up all the time throughout the year and they are baaaaaad- I couldn't care less about the horror films this month because I don't care for that genre. I'll concede Straight Jacket is shown quite a bit. But I've had TCM for the entire time it's been on the air, 17 years. As far as I know, Zotz has been shown 2 maybe 3 times in 17 years and hasn't been on in at least 2 years. That hardly qualifies as "all the time" or even occasionally. It was a favorite of mine as a kid and I waited for years for TCM to show it. Why are you so angry all the time when TCM doesn't cater to YOUR tastes? It's not all about you.
  25. I really have only one friend who is as into Classic movies as I am, and it took me forever to get her & her husband to watch a film I knew they'd like. I didn't browbeat them or anything. If it would come up, I would mention again what I thought. But frustrated? No. Are you being a control freak? I don't know since I'm not exactly sure if you're referring to a specific incident and lost your cool, or that you keep bugging them about it. Maybe if we had more information? It's obvious it's bothering you, but remember that old saying...You can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink.
