AB was on Letterman last night and I have to say he looked fantastic. I'll be he's lost close to 75 pounds and he looked much like he did when he was first starting out except older. I was hoping he'd ask him about his weight loss but it never came up. Baldwin is a great talk show guest. Also Joe Namath was the other guest & he was my major crush in high school. It's hard to believe he's 68 years old, but he was yelling at Dave so I'm guessing the hearing is going. Dave was talking to Alec about TCM and was telling him about watching Fallen Angel over the weekend & did his impression of Dana Andrews. It was cracking me up.

I've been on a few cruises and every one of them has a live band that usually plays big band music--I expect this one will be no different. From what I've read (mostly on here) Sixthman is quite experienced in arranging theme cruises so I imagine they'll be doing it up. I've expressed my concerns about what's scheduled so far, but not enough to cancel. I'm excited to meet Bob, Ben & anyone else who tags along.

> {quote:title=Arturo wrote:}{quote} > Linda Darnell was most definitely NOT a "*basically supporting player".* She was a leading lady from her first film (HOTEL FOR WOMEN), in her second film had a costarring role to one of Hollywood's top stars of that time (Tyrone Power)- in fact hers was to main role (DAYTIME WIFE); and she was solo billed above the title in her third film (STAR DUST). A few times in her career she was second lead, but she was always given STAR billing. I stand corrected. I don't have FMC so I've only seen her in Letter to 3 Wives & No Way Out--the 1st an ensemble film and the 2nd she is 3rd lead behind Portier & Widmark at least in my mind. I will probably watch some tomorrow, but the point I was trying to make is that I feel like Lawford was a pretty big star, especially early in his career, and why not have him as an honoree on SUTS? Maybe he's just not "manly" enough for some viewers. Honestly I don't have anything against Ben Johnson or Anne Francis or Linda Darnell, but it seems when we have this SUTS in August, if it's someone that the manly men here don't approve, then they shouldn't be included, no matter whether anyone else likes them or not.

I want to know why Peter Lawford is so abhorent yet no one says anything about people who were basically supporting players like Ben Johnson, Anne Francis, and frankly Linda Darnell. Is is because Johnson is a manly man and Francis & Darnell are beautiful women, and Lawford just dismissed as a Sinatra lackey? I didn't even watch any films yesterday because I don't particularly like Burt Lancaster. I'll concede he was a huge star but there are others I'd have rather been honored. I've like the films I've watched today. Lawford was handsome and was pretty good at comedy. I even liked the early film today with Richard Greene, Rogue's March.

Hollywood legends on board for the TCM Cruise
brackenhe replied to lzcutter's topic in TCM Cruise General Discussion
I'm slightly disappointed in the program scheduled so far. Suffice it to say I hope they come up with some interesting discussion panels and get more people (celebrities or movie people) to join the cruise. I really dislike Hitchcock films, but I know it was inevitable that they'll be shown. I realize it's a short cruise on a much smaller scale than the Hollywood version of the TCM festival, but I was hoping for at least some lesser known or shown films. The ones listed are on all the time. -

Stars Who Hated Their Careers, Studios, Hollywood
brackenhe replied to Ascotrudgeracer's topic in General Discussions
Frances Farmer showed lots of promise and did everything in her power to sabotage it. I realize she was probably mentally ill and an alcoholic, but it's a shame nonetheless. -
Those green hats are called Tyrolean hats. I found out when I went to Octoberfest in Helen, Georgia. I remember Michael J Pollard from early on when he was on The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis--I think he was Maynard G. Krebs' cousin or something and caused problems. It's been a while so it's hard to remember exactly. Did you know he once was married to Beth Howland, who played Vera on the tv show Alice?

Once again it appears we are being PUNKED.

Which Star is the Most Frequently Aired on TCM?
brackenhe replied to JefCostello's topic in General Discussions
It's gotta be Bogart. There rarely a day that goes by on TCM (except this month) that they don't show a film with in it, maybe not the star but he's there. -
RICH'S B (AND WORSE) JUVENILE DELINQUENT THREAD

You might want to contact Sixthman, the company that is setting up the cruise, and ask them. I think we're going to be in Key West on Friday Dec. 9.

It's obvious to me that the OP is trying to be "provocative" and contrary. Most of the films of the 1930's were adult films--meaning films made for adults who have an understanding of world. They were not films that pandered to 16 year old males. He's dismissed a great many films that we all love and is probably sitting in his mom's basement just laughing his...head off. Have fun, you whippersnapper.

Found Out Star of the Month December
brackenhe replied to audreyforever's topic in General Discussions
> {quote:title=cody1949 wrote:}{quote}I'll tell you 4 or 5 Stars of the Month that you will probably never see. Why? Because most of their work was at Paramount and to lease these movies would be too costly for TCM. Besides, they would save them to issue them as DVD's in their vault series. ALAN LADD , DOROTHY LAMOUR , BING CROSBY , BOB HOPE , and EDDIE BRACKEN. Bing Crosby was Star of the Month in December 2005. I thought Ladd & Hope had been as well but I know at least Hope has been featured on Summer Under the Stars at least once, and maybe Ladd & Lamour as well. -
I was looking through Leonard Maltin's Classic Movie Guide today and ran across a film called *Yellowstone* that looked interesting. It starred a guy named Henry Hunter along with better known co-stars such as Andy Devine, Ralph Morgan & Alan Hale. I'd never heard of him, so I looked at his filmography on IMDB and he was in maybe a dozen films in the 30's, the last being 1939. Then, he wasn't in anything until 1955 he started guest starring on just about every TV show in the late 50's through the 1960's. Anyone know anything about this guy? I think I'd like to see this movie but it's a Universal film so I don't know if TCM has access to it.

Aline could do it, gal. I do usually try to respond to the person but this AM I was the next post & figured you'd know I was talkin' to you. I intend to watch lots of Ann tomorrow. She's great and there are some I haven't seen. Have you seen *Three on a Match*? It's being shown in prime time & really defines pre-code.
-
My dear Maven--the movie is *Heat Lightning* not *Greased Lightning*. That's a race car movie from the 1970's. And I too was surprised it isn't being shown, although it has been on twice in the last couple of months. I recommend *Crooner* as well, which willl be shown very early. It has David Manners, who I think is fascinating even though not a great actor. It's about a guy who gets fame & fortune as a band leader who lets it go to his head--Ann plays his sweetie. I won't say more because I don't want to give away the plot, but I think it's a fun film. Manners gets to act all goofy & swell headed. Edited by: helenbaby on Aug 8, 2011 6:53 AM

Why so hostile about the film festival? That makes no sense. What difference is it to you if TCM hosts a film festival. From what I've read here, most people that attend have a great time.
-
I'm assuming that Ben meant that *Easy to Wed* was the first film where she really let loose the persona she eventually made famous on "I Love Lucy."
-
Well, I learned something "intresting" from this post--that Hollywood used to be Fort Lee, New Jersey. I guess they just picked up the whole thing and moved it across country.
