Bridget Fonda married film composer Danny Elfman a few years back & had a kid or two. Maybe she just tired of the rat race of Hollywood.

APRIL 14, 1994, A DAY OF CLASSIC MOVIE CELEBRATION
brackenhe replied to thomasterryjr's topic in General Discussions
Yeah, Robert Osborne hosted the daytime hours on the weekend until 2004 (I think that's when Ben came on board.) He would host the daytime hours without a necktie and then he'd be all spruced up for the evenings. He did not host The Essentials for the first 4 years, however. He only started that when Molly Haskell was the co-host and has since remained the co-host because frankly, until Alec Baldwin came along, the people he hosted with seemed to need his input. -
> {quote:title=Hibi wrote:}{quote}I didnt realize Countess From Hong Kong was a very old script of Chaplins'. That could explain a lot of things. What kind of part did Tippi have in it? I'm assuming it was supporting? I know the movie flopped (wasnt it Chaplin's last film?) but the song he wrote for it (This Is My Song) was a monster hit for Petula Clark. Was it even nominated for best song? (I dont remember......) That song wasn't nominated according to the Academy database. The only time he was nominated for any music was his score for *Limelight*. "This is My Song" is a great song, though. Petula Clark was a good singer.

Which day in August are you most looking forward to on TCM?
brackenhe replied to TopBilled's topic in General Discussions
David--I really, really, really try very hard to not knock other people's favorites. I could name quite a few very popular classic stars that I don't care for, but I wouldn't like others knocking my favorites so I try not to do it. I didn't think my saying Gabin was more compelling was insulting to Bogart. Sorry if you took it that way (but he's not a favorite of mine even though I do like a couple of films he's been in--and I watch a lot of classic movies including his.) I guess we all can't like the same things. That would be boring. Edited by: helenbaby on Jul 21, 2011 8:21 PM -
Flipped over to Andy this afternoon and Opie was wearing the orange & green plaid shirt. I thought of this thread and whoever mentioned he wore it a lot. It was the episode where Aunt Bee has a TV cooking show.

It seems like people like Linda Darnell aren't picked for Star of the Month due to the difficulty that TCM has with getting Fox films. Not to sound pretentious or anything, but I'm looking forward most to Jean Gabin's day. When I had Netflix I think I rented everything they had by him. Even in another language, he's more compelling to me than the person he's most often compared to, Bogart. I'm also looking forward to Ronald Colman because it looks like there are some rarely seen silents & early talkies. Love him. -
The ones that have already been featured, as far as I can remember are: William Demarest Frank McHugh Rags Ragland Marjorie Main Edna Mae Oliver Eve Arden William Frawley (although I'm not quite sure about that) Conrad Veight Hattie McDaniel I like to see C. Aubrey Smith or Harry Davenport Edited by: helenbaby on Jul 20, 2011 11:52 AM Edited by: helenbaby on Jul 20, 2011 11:53 AM

I bet I spent an hour reading this thread this morning. A few things I wanted to comment on: Warren Beatty played Milton Armitage on The Many Love of Dobie Gillis. Chatsworth P Osborn Jr was played by Steve Franken. I was not aware that Doris Packer played Mrs. Armitage as well as Mrs. Osborne (checked the credits & she's only credited with the Osborne part.) Remember her saying "What a nasty boy" or something to that effect. I loved that show as a kid. ETA: Checked again--She was Clarice Armitage in the 1st 2 seasons & then Clarice Osborne in the rest of the series. Was she supposed to be the same person who remarried or a different character altogether. I mainly remember her as Chatsworth's mom. The Andy Griffith show has been on one of the local stations in my town ever since it was in syndication. It has moved from the CBS affiliate to the MY TV affiliate but it's still on the air every day. They even took the color out of the seasons that were in color because I guess some people preferred it that way, which I thought was weird. Was Mabel Albertson ever a nice person in anything? I don't remember it if she was. Jack Dodson was in an episode of Matlock as well--it was an episode where his son is in a cult & Jack's character is charged with the cult leader's murder. Don Knotts spent a season or two on the show as Matlock's neighbor. Edited by: helenbaby on Jul 19, 2011 4:49 PM

I love the F. L. Wright beachhouse from A Summer Place that Richard Egan & Dorothy McGuire live in & the house that Lloyd Nolan & family move into in Susan Slade (is that the name of the movie?) I love mid century modern lke lzcutter.

> {quote:title=Cobolt wrote:}{quote}The "great political thrillers'" like Seven Days in May, Advise and Consent and The Best Man are all liberally biased. Lancaster's Gen. James Matoon Scott and Robertson's Sen. Joe Cantwell are villainess righties of course. Is that how the left wins it's arguments in films? Don't forget George C. Scott as Gen. Turgidson in Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove. I'd like to see a remake of Seven Days in May with Jon Voight or maybe even Robert Wagner as General Scott *but this time...we win and take over!* :^0 :^0 :^0 Wow, this statement is truly disturbing. You think overthrowing an elected official by a military coup is a good idea? That just goes against everything this country stands for. You can have your beliefs but we do have a constitution in place. All March's character did was sign a treaty with the Russians, not unlike your hero Reagan did with Gorbachev. I don't see anybody "winning" when you subvert the elected government.
-
I avoided this film for a long time because I'm not really much of a fan of Lancaster's work, but he is appropriately restrained & menacing in the film. I think everyone is very good, even March. Gardner's role probably could have played by anyone but she gives a melancholy performance that fits well with the character she's playing. I'm so glad I finally got around to it and will watch it again definitely.

My family never missed his show when I was little. Loved all those characters like Freddie the Freeloader, Mean Widdle Kid, Clem Kaddlehopper, San Fernando Red. My favorite films are the Whistling films & The Fuller Brush Man.

Sheesh!! > > > Helen, > > What's wrong with this sentence..."Just more whining from people who are narrow minded."? Did you really intend to label those you disagree with as narrow-minded because you don't want to hear what they have to say? > > David in Seattle > No--it's because of the complaining that this series was only scheduled because of political correctness, as the OP stated. Maybe it's just me but I'm just not willing to put everyone from any ethnic background into a convenient little box. This series is no different than any of the other series of the Race & Hollywood, and I don't think it's necessary to have a panel to discuss the pros & cons like every other political program on news channels. Obviously Dr. Shaheen has made analyses of these films and has a view point. He's an invited guest of TCM and it's just my opinion he deserves some respect. The scheduled films aren't going to be discontinued because people disagree with him. I just don't understand the concept of forcing yourself to watch something that you don't agree with and then coming to the message boards to complain about it. I don't watch things I know that will upset me. That's all there is to it. I could give a rip about any of the rest of it. Like I stated in the previous post, I just don't think this has organically popped up based on watching the pre/post movie commentary. I think that a lot of the comments are driven from outside this message board. I thought you deserved a response. I'll keep my thoughts to myself regarding this matter for the rest of the month.

Fair Weather: Ben gets it wrong, twice

He also mentioned in the intro that like On the Town the songs were written by Comden & Green but failed to mention the music was composed by Leonard Bernstein. Let's alert the media. -

I knew it--we're being punked, y'all. White businessmen are vilified? They're laughing all the way to the bank and making chumps out of all of us. Or some of us anyway. Anytime someone uses words like "MSM" and "politically correct" it's gotta be coming from somewhere else. Change the @#$$%^& channel if you're so offended.
-
This has got to be some kind of prank, right? There must be some "editorial" somewhere either on the 'net or on TV somewhere that someone has got all these new members all riled up and posting here, right? This has all become so irritating. There are about 500 channels on cable. Everyone is well within their rights to change the channel. I don't watch stuff I don't like.

I have to totally concur with Terry regarding a shirtless Hunter in Ride the Wild Surf--he had a fantastic physique. Wagner was very good except I did notice when he was talking about the above mentioned film--when he was talking about this being the only film that Hunter did that jived with the studio image of a beach guy, he was trying to say "surfer boy" and I heard "surfer board." But I'm not that picky when it comes to the intros--it amused me more than anything.

I think Philip Reed was in Journal of a Crime as the guy who insists Francoise dance with him at the party (I think that's his name anyway.) And when I read some reviews apparently Walter Pidgeon had a bit part as the mistress's co-star in the play Paul (Menjou) was writing (I didn't watch the whole thing--missed the first 15 minutes while I was on the internet.) That was a weird movie. Ruth Chatterton spends most of the film just looking worried (for good reason.)
-
SansFin--I'm assuming that Robert O. has known about the surgery for some time and it was only made public today. Maybe these were filmed some weeks back but no announcement was made to protect his privacy. I do know that when Ben used to be on the radio show Young Turks on a regular basis that he would take a week off each month to go to Atlanta to film his segments. And the guest host segment of July 4th with Conan O'Brien had to be filmed before April 5 because that was the day he shaved his beard on his show.

I wish him all the best and hope for a speedy recovery along with some well deserved rest. Love you Mr. Osborne.

What did everyone think of LOUISIANA PURCHASE...?
brackenhe replied to TopBilled's topic in General Discussions
I don't think you watched the same film I did. I thought it was particularly lousy and Zorina was awful, except she did get to wear some good clothes. Victor Moore was the best thing about it, however you are incorrect in your interpretation of his character. He was there to expose corruption and Hope & co-horts spent the film trying to frame him. But he nipped that in the bud by seeing through the schemes with the help of Zorina's character. I kept hoping they'd let Hope loose--the filibuster scene was okay, but mostly it seemed like something was missing in the film. It just wasn't funny enough and like you said, Hope was reigned in--a little too much for my taste.
