I don't think the producers of the Oscars were expecting/intending Mr. Roach to say anything because of his advance age, but he chose to make a remarks that no one on TV heard, bless his little heart. He was a cornerstone of movie comedy.

Implausible yet entertaining historical epics -
brackenhe replied to therealfuster's topic in General Discussions
I think it's easier to take artistic license on an historical event than a person's life. However, when I think on those old biographical movies of the 30's & 40's where the stories were mostly white washed, I think of them more as semi-fiction rather than truth and take it for what it's worth--good entertainment. -
That's kind of how I feel about movies that feature an adult women pretending to be a child, i.e. The Major & The Minor. It just creeps me out that Rogers & Milland fall in love. Just Creepy.

lzcutter--TCM used to have a regular "series" (I don't know what else to call it) on Friday evenings called "Hollywood on Hollywood" where they showed documentaries about films and actors. It came on at 7pm EST 6pm CST for many years. About 3 years ago they stopped this for some reason. I really enjoyed those docs even though many were shown repeatedly. However, with more docs being made and available I truly wish they'd bring this back. I looked forward to it every Friday (I have no life--so sue me )

Wow mattyfurjanay--I'm always surprised when I realize there are those out there that don't at least know who Joan Crawford is, not to put you down in any way. If you're young, you shouldn't be expected to know who she is, I guess. Even my friend's kid didn't know who Michael Jackson was LOL. I confess I don't know who 3/4 of the people in movies today are.

I saw Spy Kids 3-D at the theater with my friend's kid and I had such a headache after wearing those glasses for over 90 minutes.

According to IMDB.com the piece used throughout the movie was "Liszt Piano Concerto #1."

It was Kurt Russell's father, Bing Russell. I think he might have been an actor in cowboy movies.

Palaugh--It's 3:15 to Yuma not 5:15 to Yuma. Plus, you much be watching a different channel than me. Most of those movies that you mention I've hardly seen on TCM. I'm sure they showed some Elvis in January but I don't remember seeing them since. Same with the other movies. I don't mean to bust your chops, because I get sick of some of the movies they show. But I have to defend them in this case.

Thanks so much dyon74--it's been driving me (and the others on this thread) crazy with speculation.

You seem to be familiar with both. What would you say is the biggest difference between TCM & TCM-UK?

Good times, slappy, good times. Just kidding.

I'd have to say that Humoresque is my favorite post-Pierce performance of Crawford. However, I still like her 30's movies more than anything else she did.

Is everyone a fan of Fred and Ginger? smoking?
brackenhe replied to msladysoul's topic in General Discussions
I am not that fond of their movies, together or individually. I guess hearing all my life how my mother hates Ginger Rogers kind of influenced me, although there are a few of her performances that are OK. Astaire could dance but I always think he comes across as a little fey and unconvincing as a ladies man. I know I'll probably be taken to task over this but I can't help the way I feel. As far as the smoking, maybe it was for the cameras. I don't know for sure, but I agree it would seem to be hard to keep up the pace, especially with Astaire's alledged intense rehearsing. -
I see you're still the warm and lovely person we all love, Leo.

What Would You Suggest As Truly Essential Movies?
brackenhe replied to shainablue1's topic in Information, Please!
Another silent that I just love is Love with Garbo & Gilbert (except for the hokey happy ending.) -
What's everyone's top 3 favorite movies and why? Mine are...
brackenhe replied to bhryun's topic in General Discussions
My top 3 are Godfather 1 Godfather 2 & Gone With The Wind. To me all three are great storytelling. -
Yes, I watched. Mary Astor was an absolute hoot in that movie. I'm not used to seeing her being so wacky. And the Weiner King. Even though he only had a couple of scenes, that guy cracked me up. It was a very cute movie.

How come Stephen Sondheim wasn't part of the introduction to his selections tonight? We had to put up with Cosby with his darn sunglasses last month. I'd much rather see Sondheim.

I've seen both and I have to say that for a "small" movie that Little Nellie Kelly was rather good. But I have to say she didn't look very pregnant because back then I guess they weren't allowed to show someone pregnant. Usually women faint or are light-headed to indicate they're pregnant but no belly--wouldn't that be great? I've also seen Babes on Broadway and it's okay. But there is a blackface number so be aware of that, if that sort of thing offends you.

My bad--I got Anita Page confused with the info about Toby Wing. Sorry.
-
Hey Mongo--I wanted to ask you again about Anita Page--especially after I saw Night Court the other morning. I checked her IMDB page and it states she's still alive and has been in a couple of films in the last couple of years. Are you sure she's died?

Oh slappy--you just slay me!! LOL

I don't know about whether Vincent Sherman was or wasn't those women's lover, but when I saw him in Counsellor At Law, I could see why someone would want him. He was gorgeous.

I'm (almost) old enough to be your mother and I didn't discover her until TCM came on the air in 1994. But I especially love her in The Women. When she gets that phone call from Steven at the divorcee ranch, it's enough to break your heart, because you know she still loves him and that he loves her too (even though we never see him.) But all turns out well at the end. I love it when she says "Mother, I've grown some claws--JUNGLE RED." Wow!! It's just a great movie with great supporting characters, even Joan Fontaine.
