I think the shot of Travolta has to do with the Product Placement in the Movies tributes their doing this month, because of the beer he's drinking. And it does sound a lot like Tom Waits. I wish tcmprogrammer would find out and tell us who it is. It sure is a haunting song.
-
Just for the record, I was up & watching (I do live in CST but it was still late) and I thought that people would be PO'd when it went past the time it was supposed to end.
-
Thanks for the info Deborah. I imagine it's not easy being the son of star like Joel McCrea. But I'm glad he's happy. Don't forget that Palm Beach Story will be shown on Monday.
-
OK slappy--I just couldn't remember who's head was grafted onto who's body--I just remembered it was Ray & Rosie. LOL
-
Yeah, slappy, with Rosie Greer being the other head. I remember going to the drive-in when I was a senior in HS and saw the trailer for that movie. Definitely a step way down for Mr. Milland. Kind of like Crawford in that awful Trog. I think Olivia de Havilland may have been in one of those terrible 1970's horror films too. Poor things.
-
As far as acting, I think Milland is better. But Morgan was very handsome, just not very versatile.
-
Mary Lou--we all have our bad days. Just keep this in mind. Think twice, post once.

I'm not a big Bogart film so that's why I'm disappointed that Hef's picks are all Bogart films.
-
How about The Sound of Music where the kids sing that "Goodbye, Farewell, Auf Weidersen, Goodnight" song two times in the movie, once toward the end when they escape the Nazis?
-
I thought Tish was a sweet little movie. You can't go wrong with those stars.

She was the inspiration for Madonna? That comes out of left field. I always thought maybe Madonna was more influenced by Cher, but what do I know. I bow to Mongo. As far as Bells Are Ringing, I like her in that delightful movie. However, the wardrobe she had to wear wasn't that flattering. It was during the time when women wore full skirts and that look wasn't good on her. My favorite of hers is Born Yesterday. She's great in it and looks wonderful.

I'm going to take back what I said about this month's guest host, who I now know is Stephen Sondheim. I've checked the IMDB database to find out about a couple of the movies he picked and they are good ones. The Mind Reader is especially intriguing. Stars Warren William and appears to the a precode. Out of the Fog stars the smoldering John Garfield. Scenes from a Summer Night is supposed to be one of Bergman's best. So I definitely will be checking these out. Hef's choices--not so much.

Is TCM going to celebrate Spencer Tracy's birthday?

To use your own words, Ariel "They show at least 6 or 7 of him movies each month" (to paraphrase.) And I don't have a problem with them honoring Ms. Davis, since she is indeed the greatest actress that's ever lived. -
ucrsue--I see that you're new. We don't usually get into topics like this, but I did see the irony in showing the early Blake movie and the fact he was acquitted today. (I think irony is what I'm looking for--maybe coincidence is a better word.)
-
I don't really like the idea of any guest programmers unless they can come up with some films we haven't seen or don't see that often. I noticed the "commercial" for this month's guest (I've even forgotten who it is) but their choices aren't anything unique. Doesn't anyone have a sense of history and adventure? Just goes to show that even old people (Cosby, Hefner) have no interest in old movies any more than the kids do.

LITTLE SEEN MOVIES THAT SHOULD BE AIRED ON TCM

I'm pretty sure Higher & Higher has been on recently--maybe during Oscar month. Not absolutely sure though. -
RE: I'll Cry Tomorrow Maybe Roth's father was still alive when that movie was made and he didn't allow his character to be used in the film. That's just a guess. Biopics back then were a lot more careful about not portraying living people. Hence the terrible biopics about Jean Harlow.
-
There is a movie called The Egg & I but I think it stars Claudette Colbert & Fred MacMurray.
-
They have shown it in the past. Why don't you "Suggest A Movie" and see if they'll show it again?
-
I beg to differ stoney--Robert Taylor was indeed a hunk. But I do agree about Sterling Hayden too. Very smoldering, rawrrrr!!!
-
What about Rock Hudson? He had a very successful series in McMillan & Wife and later appeared for one year on Dynasty before he died.
-
Calm down child--the first post was just last night. It takes time to look up these things.

In one of the posts on the 2nd page of this topic was this quote "For his rendition of "A Pretty Girl is Like a Melody" in THE GREAT ZIEGFELD (1936), tenor Dennis Morgan (then billed as Stanley Mormer) was dubbed by MGM star tenor Allan Jones"

Yes, I like Hoagy Carmichael. I love Stardust. That is one of the great American standards that is just about perfect. I also like his lackadaisical manner of acting in the few movies I've seen him in.
-
Oh yes. Dr. Welby. Yes I love him. I was a little kid when Father Knows Best was on but saw it in syndication. But I was in High School during the Welby run and never missed that show. (It didn't hurt that James Brolin was the hunky, motorcycle driving, younger Dr. that worked with Dr. Welby.) But I really didn't discover his movie work until TCM. I love all those movies you named plus there was one with Susan Hayward called They Won't Believe Me. He was definitely, at least, a good supporting player. I could list a bunch of movies I think he's especially good in---Northwest Passage, The Bride Wore Red, The Enchanted Cottage (a great one), The Shining Hour, oh my goodness there are so many. Yes, I'm a fan.
