Hey Moira--I have the Action channel and recently caught an episode of Combat. Vic Morrow was hot. I had forgotten. I just remember his horrible death, and also the fact that his daughter, Jennifer Jason Leigh, refuses to acknowledge the fact that she is his daughter. I don't know if that's because they were estranged when he died or that she wanted to make it on her own without his name being brought into it. It's just sad to me.

Extra! Extra! Hollywood Production Code Triumphs Over Nature
brackenhe replied to bhryun's topic in General Discussions
I was thinking the same thing about A Child Is Born that you were, Moira. It reminded me of the Bette Davis/Mary Astor/George Brent film The Great Liewhere Astor is pregnant with Brent's child who was married to Davis in the film but while separated from her had an affair with Astor. Davis takes Astor to the desert to shield her while pregnant so she can then take the baby as her own (they think Brent is dead in South America.) Anyway, it struck me that while Astor was supposedly pregnant the only way they would let her be shown as "pregnant" was that she was a really thick terry cloth robe. Heck, she smoked like a chimney too, all the while Bette telling her she was restricted to one cigarette a day or something like that. It's a good movie (how could it not be with Astor and Davis), but that bit is hard to swallow. -
Hi Deborah-- I looked up Constance Bennett on IMDB after my post and she did seem like a "serial" marriage type person. She had 5 husbands!! She was just as cute as a button but you're right. As much as she and Joel had chemistry, I just don't see them as a married couple. Connie apparently had a good marriage as her last and she is buried at Arlington Natl Cemetery. It seems she was really involved in the war effort and the soldiers and their families lives. And the movie I was thinking about was the one where McCrea was a playwright and she was involved with Walter Pidgeon (another hunk in my opinion.) I'm sorry I turned this into a Joel McCrea/Constance Bennett thread. I just liked them as a screen pair. Helen

I didn't mean to leave you out Fernando!! I know you're not a girl. LOL. I think when AMC first started on the air they must have shown a lot of Constance Bennett and Joel McCrea movies because that's when I first really got interested in both of them. That would have been the mid 80's. Is Rockabye where there's some baby involved and they split up and get back together? I know I've probably seen all of these movies it's just been a long time. That's funny that Connie didn't remember making Bed of Roses. I guess they all can't be gems, can they?

I know what you're talking about. They have been playing it while they show what TCM is featuring this month. It does kind of have a Sting feel to it, but it's not him.
-
Hi girls--I just wanted to mention that Joel McCrea was on TCM earlier today in a film with Connie Bennett called Bed of Roses. It wasn't their greatest paring but it was OK. And Joel sure was cute.

I saw Cannery Row when it first went to Cable back in the early 80's. Nick Nolte was just luscious and I even kind of liked Debra Winger in it. But it was the dock side characters I loved the most. It's been a while but I do remember liking this movie a lot. I think Nolte is (was) underrated. I hope he makes a comeback because I think he's a great actor.

Where you been, slappy? I've missed you.

I thought Ms. Wright was a great actress, especially in her early ingenue roles. The Little Foxes is one of my favorites, not only because the wonderful Bette Davis stars, but because of all the supporting characters including Teresa Wright. I imagine that TCM will do a day of tribute to her. RIP Ms. Wright.

The reason I rented The Shanghai Gesture is because I search my DVD rental club for Walter Huston movies, and that came up. The plot sounded interesting so I rented it. So maybe I'll rent Leave Her To Heaven because I have heard so much about Tierney's performance. But boy was she bad in The Shanghai Gesture. There was just something missing from her acting. She seemed too shrill or something. Was she from the South, because she sure did seem to have a Southern accent in that movie.

I loved the Henry Aldrich movies when I was kid back in the 1960's. It seems like my local TV station would show them on Saturday afternoons (maybe Sunday afternoon, it was a weekend day, whatever.) Maybe Jimmy Lydon was over the top, but I loved those movies. I wish TCM would show them.
-
I'm going to admit something here. I've never seen Laura or Leave Her to Heaven. Is that wrong of me, because I watch just about anything? But Tierney leaves me cold. I rented one of her first movie, The Shanghai Gesture, and she was just horrible in that movie. Maybe I should give her another chance in one of these more famous movies, no?

He was gorgeous!! That's all I wanted to say.

Girls--I wouldn't take what some snot nosed kids post on IMDB message boards as anything but just stupid ranting. No one on those boards can agree on anything, and they don't appreciate the stars of the 30's & 40's. Then, they think some people, like Orlando Bloom, are great actors. There are current actors who I think are great, but I've learned to appreciate who came before them.

Yes, Ken--such as the info about Ross Alexander. I had been trying to find out info about him and IMDB just didn't have what Mongo had. But I do find IMDB invaluable when I see little shown films and want to see what others think of it. But TCM has shown some that just recently have been entered and reviewed for IMDB, so GO TCM. THE BEST MOVIE CHANNEL ON TV.

I'm sure I remember hearing that he died probably on Showbiz today on CNN. I also have taken Time Magazine for many years so I may have read about it in there. But I'm pretty sure I was aware when he died, I just don't remember the details.

Yes, but I watched Saturday's Children the last time it was on. Wasn't Garfield Star of the Month not too long ago? I think I saw it then. A very unusual role for Garfield (he played kind of a nerd) and Anne Shirley is always delightful. And the great Claude Rains is in it, so he's always worth watching. Overall, it was pretty good. I didn't watch it yesterday, but I did watch They Made Me A Criminal, East of the River, Flowing Gold, Dangerously They Live, Between Two Worlds and Saturday's Children. I think I changes the channel on Saturday's Children since I had seen it before. It's funny, if I am kind of meh on a movie I don't want to watch it again, but I would watch, for example, Humoresque again if it was on. And I had seen They Made.. and Between Two Worlds before. Those are excellent movies, especially Between Two Worlds.

I agree that it is Jeanette McDonald.

Gidget was a contraction for girl midget. Thus Gidget. I've seen that movie too many times to admit.

Well, shaniabluegirl, if you like Bette Midler, watch For the Boys. I thought it was a great movie, although I don't think a lot of people do. She was nominated for an Oscar for it.

Wow--richardny4me--You saw Paulette Goddard in person? How did she look then? I'm assuming she was rather old bu then since the Trump Tower opened in the 80's. When I was watching The Great Dictator the other night, I just remember how beautiful she is. She's an actress I'm intrigued by because I haven't really seen her in many things since TCM is my only real movie channel and they don't show her films except The Women. Re: Joan Fontaine. My brother's best friend started corresponding to her in the 80's and he has a few letters and an autographed glamour photo of her in his living room. He and my bro used to kid that ever time they would think of an idea for a movie or something and they would later see it produced, that Joan stole the idea and gave it to someone. It was just a joke but that used to crack me up. Good Times.

Title of musical short set in a college?

I don't know the name because I tuned in during the Springfield number, but the "dancing" basketball ladies were hilarious!! -
I haven't seen Northside 777. I've only seen Conte in a couple of movies but from what I remember he was pretty intense. I was just commenting on Wages of Fear. I think that's a great movie. But I love a lot of French films.
-
I watched a lot of the Garfield films today plus the documentary. He was a really great actor even though he was typecast a lot.

Deborah--Maybe they weren't doing the In Memoriam back in 1991. I can't remember. I'm getting old. But now that you mention it, it does seem like a more recent inclusion in the ceremony. But if they were doing it then, it's awful if they left Mr. McCrea out. I consider him a big star and I would think back in 1991 he would still have been remembered. But like I said, I don't remember like I used to. Maybe you could check the Oscars website. They do have several databases. Helen
