Another thing that Marshall did in a movie that just astounded me was in Trouble in Paradise he had to run up a staircase at some point in the movie and you couldn't even tell he had a wooden leg. Now maybe that was a double but I don't think so. Great actor and I agree with whoever said he should have been nominated for The Little Foxes. He was wonderful in that.

Ah--Wages of Fear--Jean Paul Belmondo, right? Love that movie. Maybe I'll have to check this one out.
-
Maybe such giants as Hepburn & Tracy don't need the first names added. Just a guess.

You know, I can forgive the omissions on the "In Memoriam" at the Oscars because I don't think there are as many classic film conniseurs out there as you might think. Oh, I know we all love them and love those stars from the past, but I don't think most people do. Just an observation. I'm not trying to rain on anyone's parade. But I have to agree, Why Russ Meyer? Although, I'd expect a tribute to John Waters if he died, so who am I to judge. Thanks for listening.

Favorite pre-code movies, scenes and OUTFITS?

I really love that dress with the fur (yikes!) that Jean Harlow has on at the dinner party in Dinner at 8. She looks all modest in the front and then she turns around and wowee the back is cut down to--well you know where. -
Mongo--I just wanted to add that I think this is the best thread yet. These facts you're presenting are fascinating. Great stuff. Keep up the good work.

LITTLE SEEN MOVIES THAT SHOULD BE AIRED ON TCM
brackenhe replied to bhryun's topic in Your Favorites
I, along with path40a, will watch just about anything, especially if I'm bored. But I did watch that William Shatner attempt at a spaghetti western that TCM showed last month called White Comanche. I started a thread about it but no one responded so it died, but man was that an awful movie. And I love Shatner, he's a TV legend. But maybe I love him is because he's so cheesy. So TCM is willing to show some pretty awful dreck. I did notice a few films on his list that were skewered on Mystery Science Theater 3000, especially the Hercules films. -
I didn't mean any of my comments to be a putdown of anyone favorites. I'm not like certain people that put down other peoples choices in movies (however, I hate Tom Cruise so I can't understand why people continue to support his career LOL.) Plus I didn't mean to get off topic of the wonderful Marni Nixon.

Yes, that Dressler line was spoken after Oliver's secretary, who appeared to be middle aged at least, told her she'd seen her perform as a little girl. That's when she said the Civil War line (I think.) Hilarious woman, that Marie!!!

Hey D120421--if we all liked the same thing it would be a dull world. I never have been much of a Glenn Ford fan. Actually, I never have felt one way or the other about him but, to me anyhow, he did seem awfully stiff in that movie.
-
Oh yeah, Moore was gorgeous. I've been watching a lot of James Bond movies lately and even when he got a little bit too old for the part, he still looked fabulous.

richardny4me--You MUST watch Interrupted Melody if you ever see that TCM is showing it if only to watch those scenes where Parker does the songs from different operas. I was watching by myself and said out loud "Wow--what a great job of lip synching" because even though I knew Parker wasn't a singer, I was so impressed. It's worth watching even if her co-star is that stick in the mud Glenn Ford.
-
Keith--I understand your comments and didn't mean to offend anyone. I thought the movie theater segment was funny, especially when all the sudden Albert Brooks pops up and says "White Chicks--the best movie of the year." That cracked me up especially after all the others he talked to. I'm a huge movie fan, but I really don't take any of these awards shows too seriously. I've watched all my life mainly because I want to see if anything exciting happens. But I wish these people wouldn't take themselves so seriously. And I do agree with you about Tom Cruise. He's not my favorite--not even close.
-
Good info about the dubbing of voices, although I'm surprised about Dennis Morgan because I thought he was a pretty good singer. Speaking of Eleanor Parker in Interrupted Melody--even though she didn't sing the songs I thought that her lip synching was very well done. It seems like lip synching to opera would be very, very hard and I thought Parker was pretty convincing.

He did do a couple of sitcoms and I think a few independent films but I think for about 3 or 4 years after that he ranched in Texas. He was really, really funny on "Wings" (I think his type of humor you either like or don't like.) But, IMO, since he got burned on those two sitcoms he probably took a step back.

I cry a lot at movies, but I was so upset after seeing Bette Midler's film For The Boys that I had to go into the bathroom at the movie theater to compose myself before I could leave.

I've never heard of any of those movies. Have you checked to see if any are in their library? -
Are you Frances Dee people fans of their son's Beach Party appearances, because when I was a kid I just thought that Jody McCrae was one of the best things about those movies. I know Susan and Deborah have both mentioned him in their posts, but no comments about his movie career.

I watched on & off during the evening. TCM was showing Kapo again and I missed it last time so I watched that and then turned over to the Oscars. I was glad to see Morgan Freeman finally be acknowledge for his screen work, because I think he's just great (haven't seen the movie but he's deserved it a couple times already.) However, I kind of wanted to see Thomas Haden Church win only because he's made quite a comeback after being out of the business for a while. Same for Virginia Madsden, even though she's been acting all along, it was great to see her get a chance at the Oscars. The rest of the categories I didn't really care who won. I thought Chris Rock was actually pretty good as the host. I know he's getting mixed reviews, because he seems to be a polarizing figure. He was irreverent but he held back. I think it's about time things were mixed up a bit. But I doubt he'll be asked back because there was a lot of hate out there for him. But, again, I thought he did a really good job. And Sean Penn needs to get the stick out of the uncomfortable place.

Thanks Mongo--I was sure Ward Bond would be on there too so I missed him. I remember he was in the most AFI 100 years 100 movies so I figured he would be on my list too. I wanted to put Claude Rains on there but I could only find 2 BP's he was in: Lawrence of Arabia and Casablanca.
-
I know this is ASK MONGO, not ASK BRACKENHE, but I just have to add the newest addition to the list, Mr. Morgan Freeman. He appeared in Driving Miss Daisy, Unforgiven and now Million Dollar Baby.

She recently appeared on the AFI's 100 Years-100 Songs special last summer. I agree she has a great voice. I also wanted to add that Richard Beymer was also dubbed in West Side Story. I think Larry Kert was the singer but I can't be sure of that. As much as I love that movie, I can't understand why they picked non singers (well, not professional singers) for that movie. I think even Rita Moreno was dubbed too.

OK--I found out I'm wrong about Nicholson because Titanic won Best Picture not As Good As It Gets. Thanks path40

I think the movie you're looking for is Romance on the High Seas with Doris Day.
