Thanks mongo--after I posted the question I decided to look into it myself, not knowing it would be quite a task. However, here's what I came up with. Men--Harry Davenport (The Life of Emile Zola, You Can't Take it With You & Gone With the Wind) Donald Crisp (Mutiny on the Bounty, How Green Was My Valley & The Life of Emile Zola) John Cazale (Godfather 1 & 2 & The Deer Hunter) Jack Nicholson (One Few Over the Cuckoo's Nest, As Good As it Gets & Terms of Endearment) Clark Gable (It Happened One Night, Mutiny on the Bounty & Gone with the Wind) Hugh Griffith (Ben Hur, Tom Jones & Oliver!) Dustin Hoffman (Rain Man, Kramer Vs. Kramer & Midnight Cowboy) John Gielgud (Around the World in 80 Days, Gandhi & Chariots of Fire) Women--Meryl Streep (The Deer Hunter,Kramer Vs. Kramer & Out of Africa) Diane Keaton (Godfather 1 & 2 & Annie Hall) Talia Shire (Godfather 1 & 2 and Rocky) Shirley McLaine (Around the World in 80 Days, Terms of Endearment & The Apartment) If there are any I missed please let me know.

The writing style kind of reminds me of mypalspencer who is a frequent contributor to the board. I've never corresponded with him directly but he seems harmless enough.

Hi again Mongo--I've come up with 4 women and 8 men who have been in 3 Best Pictures. I thought the tie breaker would be a cameo in Around the World in 80 Days but 2 of the above mentioned are in the movie, but none of the rest. Tell me I'm close to being right LOL.

I'm just curious, after reading all these posts about Frances Dee, is how you became such big fans of hers? She wasn't flashy like other comtemporaries like Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, or Katherine Hepburn. This is not a dig at her, it's just that she seems to fade into the background compared to these others. I've seen a lot of movies and I really only remember her in two of them, and I really don't remember her as much as the movies she was in. This is kind of like that thread we had on Deanna Durbin. I didn't know that these now forgotten actresses have such a current following, until now.

Hi Mongo--Since it's Oscar night tonight, I have a question about the Oscars. Do you happen to know what actor or actress has appeared in the most Best Picture winners? I'm not just talking about the stars but the supporting players too. I've been thinking about this since yesterday.

AMPAS TRIVIA: Most Honored Motion Pictures???
brackenhe replied to spencerl964's topic in General Discussions
Didn't Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King win all their noms? I can't remember how many but I was thinking they won the most of any film. -
whatasalsa--I love Forrest Gump too. I think there's some Tom Hanks/Forrest Gump backlash in the last couple of years but I wouldn't let that discourage me from loving it. I thought Hanks was great in the movie, as well as great performances by Gary Sinise and Robin Wright Penn. So I will defend this movie, yes I will.

Blacks contribution of Golden Era Hollywood
brackenhe replied to msladysoul's topic in General Discussions
I think you misunderstood what I was saying, msladysoul. I was saying that while we on this message board know and love a lot of the black performers of yesteryear, the general population is unaware of some of these folks because blacks of 30 or 40 years ago were not as appreciative of the efforts of their forefathers & mothers contributions to entertainment. I don't think they were sellouts--they did the work available to them. And, if blacks outnumber whites now, then I take back my comment about being in the minority. -
Howard Hughes and the women of Hollywood
brackenhe replied to msladysoul's topic in General Discussions
I wanted to add this--back during the time Hughes was in Hollywood, there weren't that many ways of getting attention. Sorry to say that talent wasn't all that got women anywhere. They had to have a "sponsor" (read-sugardaddy) that would take them places and introduce them to the right people. I sometimes think that those women around Hughes saw an opportunity for "quid pro quo." Just my opinion. -
I was watching "The Lives of a Bengal Lancer" yesterday and I have to say Gary Cooper was just lovely in it. He was gorgeous as a young man.

Fiddler on the Roof is a little more than 30 years old (I think it came out in 1970 or 1971) but I think it's a great musical. You also left off The Deer Hunter and Platoon, which I feel is a great Vietnam era movie. I also love The Shawshank Redemption and Full Metal Jacket. I guess I could list a bunch if I had time but your list is pretty good (some I wouldn't see if you paid me, but I'm sure others will say classic.)

I like the songs in My Fair Lady better, although neither is my favorite musical. Plus, I like Hepburn a little better than Caron.

Isn't that Donald Woods in "Star of the Night"?

Worst & Best BP OSCAR WINNER. Your pix???
brackenhe replied to spencerl964's topic in General Discussions
It's funny (not ha-ha, just weird) that a lot of people have listed some of the last 10-15 Best Picture winners. We don't think much of today's movies, do we? I wanted to add a couple of more--Titanic & last years winner Lord of the Rings The Return of the King. Titanic had pretty good effects but the script was horrible. And I just can't get into LOTR: TROTK. -

Blacks contribution of Golden Era Hollywood
brackenhe replied to msladysoul's topic in General Discussions
msladysoul--First, I want to say I am a middle age white person and I fully appreciate the contributions of African American performers. I wrote a piece on here about a year ago about how great I thought Hattie McDaniel was in just about every picture I saw her in. I have seen several Michaux movies and I watch every documentary that's on TV about Black performers since the turn of the century. Please don't get the wrong idea here for what I'm about to say. But don't you think that Blacks, especially 30-40 years ago, thought that maybe some of these performers were "sell outs" and "Uncle Toms" (your words) and that maybe that might be some of the reason that those performers are as remembered as fondly as they might be. I distinctly remember a lot of militant figures condemning those who chose the only avenue available to them in the 30's & 40's to be in show business. Is it the fault of the movie goers of today? I don't know, but I know it's not the case with me. I'm extremely interested in all movie stuff, including actors & actresses that aren't the same color as I am. You could write these same words about Hispanics and Asians, who are even more underrepresented than Blacks. I think most people, at least over the age of 30, know who Hattie and Lena Horne and Paul Robeson are, if they are real movie fans. I'm not trying to get on your case, but I disagree with what you say. I think most people on this board are aware of the contributions of minority performers in films. -
I usually don't bother myself about the "ratio" of the films being presented, but the faded color of this movie did bother me a bit. But it's one I hadn't seen so I was glad to watch it. Was a pretty good courtroom drama and kind of appropriate for today's military.

He plays a CPO mechanic/type in Hell Divers with Clark Gable but it's about Navy pilots, not the Coast Guard. Is that it?

Great minds think alike!!! And at the same time!!

I think it might be The Clock with Judy Garland and Robert Walker.

She Had To Say Yes was on last month on the day they devoted to Loretta Young films, I think. I'm pretty sure I've seen it recently on TCM.

Name Your Favorite Movie with Physical Comedy
brackenhe replied to loliteblue's topic in General Discussions
There's so many it's hard to pick one. I just love slapstick. But one that came to mind (and this is weak) is a scene in The Money Pit starring Tom Hanks where he's at the house and there's plastering going on. It's an involved stunt but it involves scaffolding, a wheel barrow and lots of cement. In fact, this movie has a lot of that type thing in it. I just can't think of any right now, but I'm a sucker for scene where there's a lot of falling down and confusion. -
Sorry for all the typos--I'm not that uneducated.

Had to make a test entry before I got long winded and then it wouldn't update. Anyway---------- I agree with most all the posts on here--Ben's getting better but he does she smarmy and cynical (that's the Libra coming out in me-everything in balance LOL!) But I understand that Bob can't do it all, and Ben's youth will bring in a younger audience to appreciate the older movies. While most of the movies they show on the weekends are movies we've (board members) seen a million times, they usually ARE older movies, not movies released in the last 20-25 years. They are the classics, and to get new viewers you have to shown well known movies so maybe they might investigates the lesser known movies by these same actors and directors. As far as showing newer movies, I'm glad this Oscar month that TCM decided to mix it up a bit and show the newer Oscar winners and nominees. Even I'll admit that I normally don't enjoy Oscar month because after the first few years of it, I got tired of seeing TCM recycle the same old movies. (I've had TCM since it's been on so I guess I'm an old time viewer.) I'm sure after the end of the month, we'll go back to the great TCM we all love. But I'm willing to give them the 31 days of Oscar ever year. Now only if they would lease some older winners from other studios that we don't see, I'd be a happy camper. Sorry for the rambling.
